Hemostatic Effects of Falcaria vulgaris for use in dressing war wounds

Traditional medicine is one of the rich branches of medicine in Iran and the world. Falcaria vulgaris is one of the medicinal and native plants of the western region of Iran. It is used in traditional medicine to accelerate the prevention of bleeding and heal skin wounds. War wounds are usually accompanied by tissue damage and bleeding. During eight years of holy defense, Iranian warriors in Kermanshah used this plant to accelerate the blood clotting of war wounds. Considering that Falcaria vulgaris is native to the western region of the country and this region is of great strategic importance, in this study, the anti-bleeding effects of this plant were investigated.

 In this project, 5% and 10% alcoholic extracts of plant leaves were used. Prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and coagulation time (CT) tests were used to evaluate coagulation indices on the blood samples of 10 healthy men aged 23-24 years in the laboratory.

The results showed that Falcaria vulgaris in both concentrations of 5 and 10% had accelerating effects on blood coagulation (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the two concentrations (p> 0.05).

Falcaria vulgaris has anti-bleeding effects. It is suggested that these results be used in the production of a plaster or dressing to accelerate the prevention of bleeding from war wounds by the Army of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Achieving the best anti-bleeding concentration requires further studies.
