Analysis of relationship between Group cohesion, conflict management style and the effectiveness of football teams in the clubs present in Iran's premier league

Abstract:
Objective

this study aims to investigate the relationship between group cohesion and conflict management (Competing and Collaborating style) and the effectiveness of football teams in the Iran's premier league clubs.

Methodology

The research method was descriptive (correlation), both field and library. The statistical population includes all the players and coaches of 16 teams competing in the 16th Premier League Football Championship in 2017. To collect data, Widmeyer's Group Coherency Inventory (1985), Tjosvold’s Conflict Management Questionnaire (2006) and Wang's Team Effectiveness Questionnaire (2000) were used. The results were obtained using structural equation modelling and partial least squares method.

Results

The results showed a positively significant relationship between conflict management (Collaborating style) and team’s effectiveness in the Iran's premier league clubs from the viewpoints of players and coaches. Also, results showed a negatively significant relationship between conflict management (Competing style) and team’s effectiveness in the Iran's premier league clubs from the viewpoints of players and coaches. There is a positively significant relationship between conflict management style (Collaborating) and task cohesion. There is a positively significant relationship between conflict management style (Collaborating) and social cohesion. There is a negatively significant relationship between conflict management style (Competing) and task cohesion. There is a negatively insignificant relationship between conflict management style (Competing) and social cohesion. There is also a positive and significant relationship between the task cohesion and social cohesion and the effectiveness of the team from the viewpoints of players and coaches.
