Evaluation of Periodontal Status in Patients With Chronic Renal Disease

Background and Objectives Most renal patients have various oral manifestations such as halitosis, xerostomiaand pale mucosa. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between periodontalstatus and chronic renal disease.Subjects and Methods In this case-control study, the case group was divided into three subgroups, whichincluded renal patients before dialysis, patients undergoing hemodialysis, and patients after renal transplantation,each of which included 23 patients. The control group also included 38 healthy individuals interms of renal function. After obtaining the consent form and completing the questionnaire, the amountof plaque index, gingival index, papillary bleeding index, probing depth, loss of clinical attachment, gingivalrecession and gingival enlargement were measured T-student,chi-square. and Anova was used toanalyze the data.Results The plaque index, gingival index, papillary bleeding index, probing depth, loss of clinical attachmentin groups with chronic renal disease were higher than the control groups (P< 0.001) but there wasno significant difference in gingival recession and gingival enlargement between control group and casegroups (P> 0.05 ) . These parameters were not significantly different between the groups with chronicrenal disease (P> 0.05).Conclusion Periodontal disease is more common in patients with chronic renal disease, therefore, specialperiodontal treatment considerations and regular dental examinations should be added to the treatmentplan of these patients.
