Abstract:
Objective

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between maternal personality, biological and psychological characteristics and family functioning with the severity of autism in children. The statistical population of the study included all parents of children aged 3 to 15 years in rehabilitation centers in Tehran.

Method

The estimated sample is 120 people. Available sampling method was used to select the sample. Data collection tools in this study were Yaghoubi et al.'s Family Performance Questionnaire, Afrooz Biological, Psychological, Cognitive and Social Characteristics Questionnaire, and Minnesota Multidimensional Personality Traits Questionnaire.

Results

SPSS24 software and one-sample t-test, Pearson correlation, stepwise multiple regression and analysis of variance were used for statistical calculations and analysis.

Results

showed that the correlation coefficient between the tendency of the individual to perform dramatic reactions and negative personality has a significant relationship with the severity of autism in children. Other personality traits of mothers have no significant relationship with the severity of autism in children. Also, there is no relationship between the characteristics of general health status, maternal delivery status and the severity of autism in children. But there is a significant relationship in blood group and there is a significant negative relationship between family functioning and the severity of autism in children. Based on this, it can be said that occupational therapists should consider the functions of the family and apply the unique patterns of behavior of the person by focusing on the mutual relations between the two people. Bilateral influences mean that unique common patterns of interaction, emotion, and perception between two people, rather than the actions, emotions, and thoughts of each individual, express what is likely to affect a child or adolescent's development
