Evaluation of the seismic behavior of SAC steel frame buildings retrofitted with viscous dampers affected by far and near fault earthquakes

Abstract:

Recently, the use of strategies to increase the strength and damping of structures against seismic loads, with the aim of increasing safety against reducing maintenance and maintenance costs, has been considered by researchers. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of this structural system on the response ‎of SAC standard structures that have been constructed in 3, 9 and 20 floors, against seismic loads.‎ To investigate this issue, in this study, a numerical model of viscous damper was first created using ‎Abaqus software.‎ Then, the effect of near and near fault ground motions of Imperial Vali, Loma Prieta, and Northridge ‎earthquakes on the behavior of this structural system was evaluated separately.‎ The results, including floor drift, bearing capacity (as maximum base shear), and structural energy ‎absorption (in the two modes of external work and strain energy), were discussed.‎ On average for the three structures under study, the results indicate a 200% reduction in drift, a 30% ‎increase in load-bearing capacity, and a 35% increase in energy absorption of SAC standard steel ‎structures after the application of a viscous damper‏.
