The Effectiveness of Health Literacy Training on Improving Mental Health and Problem Solving Skills of People on the Verge of Marriage

A successful marriage is able to meet many psychological and physical needs in a safe environment. The most useful and healthy step to make a conscious choice to get married is to benefit from pre-marriage education. For this purpose, the current research was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of health literacy education on improving mental health and problem solving skills of people on the verge of marriage.

The current research was an applied research and in terms of the research method, it was a semi-experimental research of pretest-posttest type with a control group. The statistical population of this research included all girls and boys on the verge of marriage in Shahrood city in 2022. Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire (MHLQ) and Problem-Solving Style Questionnaire were used to collect information. Multivariate analysis of covariance was used to analyze the data.

The results showed that there is a significant difference between both groups in the components of incompatible problem solving strategy and compatible problem solving strategy (P<0.001). Also, there is a significant difference between both groups in the components of awareness of mental problems, wrong beliefs about mental health, seeking help and first aid skills, and the component of self-help strategies of mental health literacy (P<0.001). Therefore, mental health literacy education leads to improvement of mental health and problem solving strategies of people on the verge of marriage (P<0.01).

Based on the findings, it can be concluded that learning problem-solving skills provides effective solutions when facing problems and these strategies help to maintain mental health as a preventive factor and as a result It prevents most of the subsequent problems in married life.
