The emergency department is one of the important departments of hospitals. Due to the large number of patients and to prevent overcrowding in emergencies, a triage plan is usually used. This study aimed to review the common types of pre-hospital and hospital triage.
In this study, articles published from 2000 to 2020 using the keywords Triage, Hospital Triage Training, Emergency Department, Nurse, Pre-hospital Triage, and Hospital Triage in Persian databases of SID, Magiran, IranMedex and Irandoc and English databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, Science Direct and ProQuest were reviewed. The Google Scholar search engine was also searched in English and Persian to increase the richness of the number of retrieved articles.
Based on the search strategy, 60 articles were reviewed, and finally 42 studies were included in the study. Six triage methods for pre-hospital triage (three-level triage system, JUMP START system, SALT, MASS, SIEVE triage, and Pediatric triage tape) and nine triage methods were introduced for hospital triage (Spot check system, Traffic director system, Comprehensive system, Manchester, Australian, Canadian, Emergency Severity Index (ESI), Burn triage, and Military triage). Discussion and
Triage methods vary based on how patients are divided and services are provided. Therefore, to perform the correct triage, it is necessary to teach the correct triage techniques to the nurses.
