Examining the patients' views on professional behavior by specialist Physicians: a cross-sectional descriptive study in southern Iran

Medical professionalism is a normative system that organizes and provides health care. The standards and values that doctors commit themselves to; it ensures that all medical professionals provide quality care to their patients. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of investigating the views of patients referring to the treatment clinics of Jahrom University of Medical Sciences regarding the observance of professional behavior by specialist Physicians.

Methods & Materials

This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. Sampling in this study was done randomly from all patients referred to Imam Reza Clinic of Peymaniyeh Hospital and Honari Clinic of Motahari Hospital of Jahrom city in 2023. The data collection tool in this study includes two demographic information questionnaires and a professional behavior questionnaire by specialist physisians. Demographic information questionnaire which includes information such as: age of patients, gender of patients, level of education and marital status). Data analysis in this study using SPSS software version 21 and using descriptive statistical tests (mean, percentage and standard deviation) and inferential statistical tests (chi-square and t-test) at a significance level of P<0.05.


Out of 295 patients, 52.5% were male and the rest were female. Among the items in the questionnaire regarding professional behavior by specialist physisians, the highest satisfaction is from the item "The treating doctors treat my patient and family with respect." Also, the least have been satisfied with the item "My treating doctors guide me legally in case of my dissatisfaction with the performance of other doctors and my request for follow-up." The independent t-test showed that there is a relationship between gender and compliance with professional behavior by specialist physisians (P=0.023). The level of satisfaction with the professional behavior of specialist physisians is higher in women than in men. But the results of ANOVA test showed that there is no relationship between age, education, marriage and compliance with professional behavior by specialist physisians (P<0.05).


This study showed that it is possible to consider the patients' point of view as the main pillar of the treatment system in evaluating the professional behavior of specialist Physicians. Of course, more studies are needed to determine all its dimensions and to put the evaluation results of this tool in planning and policy making. Also, the findings of this research point to the necessity of training and empowering clinical experts on professional behavior in fields that require providing expert feedback; which can be considered in continuous education programs.
