Abstract:
A profound understanding of the Quran necessitates a comprehensive grasp of the sources employed in its interpretation. Among these, Arabic literature, encompassing grammar, syntax, rhetoric, and lexicography, occupies a pivotal role. This paper posits that Arabic literature precedes other interpretive sources, including the Quran itself, hadith, Aql (intellect), and empirical sciences, in the hierarchical order of interpretive methodologies. Furthermore, it argues that the effective utilization of other sources, particularly the Quran and hadith, hinges on a solid foundation in Arabic language and literature. This research delves into the perspective of Ayatollah Khamenei, a distinguished contemporary Quranic exegete, on the significance of Arabic literature in Quranic interpretation. Employing a descriptive-analytical approach, the study examines both the theoretical underpinnings and practical applications of Arabic literary tools as elucidated by Ayatollah Khamenei. The findings reveal seven primary roles of Arabic literature in the Quran’s interpretation: distinguishing between sound and unsound interpretations, deriving novel interpretive insights, elucidating the literary miracles of the Quran, and providing semantic analysis of Quranic terms.
