The Structure of the Narrative in the Film Gladiator: Transforming Maximus's Story into an Epic Drama
The primary aim of this research is to examine the narrative structure of the film Gladiator in transforming the story of Maximus into an epic drama. This study analyzes the epic narrative of Gladiator to determine what framework must be adhered to in order to create an epic film through its narrative.
This research employs a descriptive-analytical method, focusing on the analysis of Gladiator to derive its narrative structure. By examining the film's narrative, an overarching framework for narrative structure in epic drama is proposed.
In adapting the historical narrative of Gladiator, significant events from the protagonist's life are selected that possess epic potential, which the screenwriter transforms into a narrative. The writer utilizes imagination to create a cohesive and interconnected story. In Gladiator, the screenwriter imaginatively weaves various events into a narrative that portrays the hero as an epic character.
Considering that no character's story is inherently a cohesive narrative, potential events can be utilized to craft the fate of an epic character. These are occurrences that have not happened but are plausible for the hero, provided that the character's life is not distorted given the epic nature of the work. All events revolve around the hero, and the story should not be overly complex in its narration so that all audience focus remains on the hero.
