Frequency of Attempt to Suicide in Psychiatric Ward of Baqiyatallah Hospital

Abstract:
Introduction

Suicide is considered as an important individual and social disorder. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of attempt to suicide in psychiatric ward of Baqiyatallah Hospital from April 2001 to September 2003.

Discussion

Frequency of attempt to suicide was higher in war-injured patients (especially those who had blast injury), a history of psychiatric ward admission, and those who used psychiatric medicine. In addition, attempt to suicide was higher in patient who were young, single, military, less educated, without familial support, and also those who had antisocial behavior especially opium abuse. The most frequent psychiatric co-morbidities were depression and epilepsy.

Material And Methods

In a retrospective descriptive study, we collected data of 83 patients who had been admitted because of attempt to suicide.

Results

From the 2027 patients admitted during this period, 83 patients (4.1%) had a history of attempt to suicide. This percentage in females was 4.7% and in males 3.1%. The most common age for suicide was 20.
