Abstract:

The selection of information resources is one of the most important steps of collection-development and through this step, the librarians exercise their policies and control on the information-seeking behavior of the clients and on the accessibility of the resources. They individually or through a Selection committee, provide the needed information resources of the library taking into consideration the limitations and policies of the library. The selection of information resources, evaluation of the collection, weeding and balancing the collection is a task that the quality and quantity of many other library services such as reference services, are – directly or indirectly – related to il. However, with the expansion of the Internet information resources and the ever – increasing tendency of producers and publishers – specially the publishers of scientific and research journals – to distribution of information through the internet, this role and function is undergoing a lot of changes. In some cases, the elimination of the Intermediary role of librarians in the selection of the Internet information resources can be easily seen and in other cases adopting broad policies in accessing to information through the Internet is the only task of the librarians in charge of collection development. The effect of Internet on the selection of information resources can be studied in terms of the following aspects: 1. Internet as a selection too 1 2. the role & and place of librarians and information users in the selection of information resources 3. the effect of Internet on the information – seeking behavior of researchers and users.
