Epidemiology of Diabetes Mellitus in Iran
Diabetes mellitus is a common disease worldwide. The prevalence and incidence of diabetes is increasing in most populations, being more prominent in developing countries. The number of diabetic patients in Iran is estimated around 1.5 million now.Epidemiologic studies indicate diverse distribution of diabetes in Iran; studies in Isfahan among adults 35 years of age or older reveal a valence of about 7-8 %. This figure is much higher, in Yazd (central part of Iran, 16.3%) and Booshehr (southern part of Iran) 13.6%. It seems that the prevalence of diabetes in rural areas is lower; around 3-5%.Screening programs conducted in different parts of Iran revealed that nearly half of type 2 diabetics are unaware of their problem. This may be the reason why complications of diabetes are so common in this country. In recent years, a national program has been designed for primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of diabetes. The major strategies of this program are training specialized health care providers for diabetics, general population education, identification of high-risk groups, and screening for unrecognized cases.
