Evaluation the relation between type II diabetes and tongue mucosal lesions

Background And Aim
According to the prevalence of the mucosal lesions and etiologic importance of these lesions and different reports of the role of diseases with itۥs incidence and evaluating the relation between type II diabetes and oral mucosal lesions and compare them with the control (healthy) group, this survey place in "Metabolism and gland center of Iran medical university "
Material And Methods
This Historical cohort study was among 50 type II diabetics and 50 controls. Both group were similar in sex / age / smoking / wearing dentures and oral hygiene. They had no background of Anemia, B12 deficiency and Radiotherapy. Type II diabetics were patients who were treated in this center and the control group were people which attend this center with FBS<100. Tongue lesions were found with clinical examinations by dentistry student. lesions were: Geographic tongue, Bald Tongue, Atrophic patches, traumatic ulcers, candidial lesions of the tongue, xerosthomia and Burning tongue. The results were recorded in the questionnaire. Then statistical analysis used for evaluating the relation between type II diabetes and tongue lesions.
Results
In this study between 50 diabetics, 27 (57%) and among controls 5 (10%) had oral mucosal lesions. 30 (60%) diabetics and 12 (24%) controls had xerosthomia. Burning tongue in 9 (18%) diabetics and 3 (6%) controls, Geographic tongue in 4 (8%) diabetics and 1 (2%) control, traumatic ulcers in 6 (12%) diabetics and 3 (6%) controls, Atrophic tongue in 7 (14%) diabetics and 1 (2%) control, Bald tongue in 4 (8%) diabetics, 1 (2%) diabetic with pseudo membranous candidiasis and 1 diabetic (2%) with median Rhomboid glossitis, were found in this study.
Conclusion
Since the difference in prevalence of tongue mucosal lesions between two groups, was statistically significant (P<0/000001), we can pay more attention in diabetics and be helpful by introducing them to the specialist. we can prevent these lesions in these cases, by teaching the oral hygiene procedures and healthy nutrition.
Conclusion
In order to have more reliable results we suggest to increase the sample size in the future studies.
