CPTED and reducing cost of crime in public spaces

Crime has physiological and social costs in addition to its economic costs. Crime prevention is undoubtful necessity which reduces cost of crime that criminal justice system spends in order to prosecution and punishment of offenders. Most of interactions occurred in public space and improper design of these spaces provide opportunities for committing crime. Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) claims that crime opportunities could be reduced through manipulation and proper design of environment. Application of these strategies will be resulted in crime prevention, creating positive and safe space, improvement of quality of life and ultimately reducing cost of crime. Design of public space must improve surveillance opportunities, reducing entrapment spaces and increasing participation of individuals in space.
