Investigation of Salmonella Abortous ovis in ovine aborted fetal samples from Shahrekord district

The aim of this study was to give an account of the distribution of Salmonella Abortus ovis in aborted ovine fetal samples in Shahrekord district in west centre of Iran. Forty two abortion samples (lamb or viscera including lung, liver, spleen and stomach) from 16 different flocks received and examined bacteriologically Salmonella Abortus ovis was isolated from 14 (33.33%) samples. The isolates were biochemically identified, and confirmed by rapid slide agglutination test. Inoculation to pre-enrichment and enrichment in non selective broth was found to be superior to direct inoculation for Salmonella Abortus ovis isolation. We concluded that Salmonella Abortusovis may be regarded as a main cause of ewe’s abortion in studied district.
