Comparison between antibacterial effects of the synthesized and commercial urotropin, and the effects of light, temperature and time on antibacterial activity of its aqueous solution

Antibacterials in medicine and veterinary medicine were originally obtained from microbial cultures but synthetic and semi-synthetic compounds with proper antibiotic activity were then produced and were used against various bacterial infections. In this study, the antimicrobial effects of urotropin on Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus beta-haemolyticus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Bacillus cereus, Shigella felexnery, Klebsiella oxytoca and Proteus morgany were first evaluated and then the effects of light, temperature and time on the antibacterial effect of urotropin were examined. Serial dilution technique was used to obtain MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration). Moreover, MIC of urotropin against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeroginosa and Staphylococcus aureus was determined every fifteen days for three months. During this period, aqueous solutions of two urotropin products were kept at room temperature, refrigerator and incubator. The antibacterial effect of synthesized urotropin for all of the above bacteria was equal to or more than the commercial form. It is generally concluded that urotropin in the aqueous form will keep its antibacterial effect at least for 3 months.
