Relation between Job Stress and Burnout among the Nursing Staff

Introduction & Burnout is defined as feelings of emotional exhaustion، depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment. Nursing staff are susceptible to burnout، due to the nature of their profession. The aim of this study was to determine the relation between job stress and burnout among nursing staff of Alborz Hospital of Karaj، Iran. The present study was a descriptive-correlation study which utilized convenience sampling and 90 nursing staff of Alborz hospital of Karaj participated in the study. Data was collected by a self-report questionnaire. The instruments used included a demographic data form، the Maslach Burnout questionnaire، and an occupational stress questionnaire. Data was analyzed by SPSS software and using descriptive statistics، t-test، one way-ANOVA and chi square. The findings indicated that (86. 7%) of the nursing staff had moderate job stress، (57. 8 %) had mild emotional exhaustion، (52. 2%) had moderate depersonalization and (64. 4%) had low personal achievement. Statistical significant relationship was found between job stress with emotional exhaustion (p=0. 036)، depersonalization (p=0. 000) and personal accomplishment (p=0. 003). It seemed that that job stress had a negative impact on burnout. Interventions to reduce job stress among the nursing staff، and strengthening their coping resources could help preventing burnout.
