Analysis of inappropriate pharmaceutical consumption by Berrs criteria among elderly discharged from hospital affiliated with TUMS in year 2010
Abstract:
Objectives
Studies demonstrated that chronic diseases are more frequent among elderly than other groups of population. Therefore, it seems plausible that more pharmaceuticals are consumed by them than by other groups of patients. The elderly are most likely to be threathened by pharmaceuticals because of their more drug consumptions. Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics are reported as major threats for elderly because they may change the effect of drugs in elderly's oraganisisms.the other threat which is worth to be noted is inappropriate prescriptions for elderly. These threats are among the well known phenomena, discussed in recent and relevant literature, and may develop great side effects on the elderly's health and well- being. Materiala and Methods
For the purpose of the present study 212 patients aged 60 and more discharged from 4 (2 teaching and 2 non-teaching) general hospitals affiliated with TUMS selected. Beers Criteria was employed to assess inappropriate use of pharmaceutical of the sample. Results
Findings reveal that there was a significant relation between the level of income and inappropriate use of pharmaceutical among the sample(P=0/041). The most frequent inappropriate use of drug belongs to Alprazolam(16/66%),Chlordiazepoxide(14/28%),Fluoxetine(11/90%) and Oxazepam(11/90%) respectively. Clopidogrel was determined as the most interactive drug with heart disease(29/4%). Benzodiazepine recognized as the most frequent class of pharmaceuticals consumed by the patient(49/98%) and the mean age for study population equaled 69/32years.Conclusion
Inappropriate consumption of pharmaceutical was relatively high among the study population, in comparison to other countries. Benzodiazepines were recognized as the most frequent drugs used inappropriately by the sample. Such a behavior may position the elderly to unpredicted and unpleasant side effects resulted from drugs interaction. Training physicians and medical students in this respect is suggested.Language:
