Predictors of Safety Attitude among Workers based on the Health Action Model

The worldwide concern about safety has created a need for new and effective methods to improve safety in the workplace. In order to improve the effectiveness of preventive programs, main determinants of behavior are required to be addressed. One of these main determinants is safety attitude. This study aimed to determine the predictors of safety attitude based on the Health Action Model (HAM). This descriptive study was conducted in 2009. HAM was used to predict safety attitude among workers at steel making and roll mill sections of Isfahan Steel Company (Isfahan, Iran). Using random sampling, 300 workers of Isfahan Steel Company were selected. They filled an HAM-based questionnaire. Data was analyzed by multiple regression and exploratory factor analysis in SPSS13. The mean age and work experience of workers were 34.6 ± 7.38 and 11.7 ± 7.71, respectively. The factors of "belief system", "attitude system", and "normative system" could predict 25% of the variance of safety attitude among workers (P < 0.001). The results of this study supported of the effectiveness of HAM in predicting safety attitude. HAM can thus be used as a framework for safety interventions.
