Deltas are the most important morphological units which have a tremendous effect on agricultural activities, mining, coastal management, etc. Despite appropriate soil and water resources, deltas are influenced by environmental phenomena such as climate change and sea level changes. The effect of these changes will appear on physico-chemical and mineralogical features of delta’s sediments. The current research was conducted to analyze Karkheh delta depositional environments based on the chemical characteristics of ancient sediments. Depositional environments and locations of core were identified using digital data processing, geomorphology mapping, and initial visit of the area. The coring was carried out using rotary drilling machine continuously down to a depth of 10 m in Jofeir and Rofayeh. Twenty samples were collected from cores for mineralogical and chemical tests. The changes in chemical and mineralogical characteristics revealed that at least three major discontinuities exist between sedimentary layers to a depth of 10 m. In addition, thickness and type of the sediment are not in the same and change depending on the stability of depositional environments. The increasing trend in Mg/Ca, magnesium and salinity; and the decreasing trend in clay particle percentage show that sedimentary environments tend to change toward a dry conditions and high energy environments from depth of 5 to 10 meters. In contrast, at the depth of 5 to 4 and 3 to 0 meter, this trend is towards more humid climate and low energy environments. Therefore, it is concluded that the depositional environment of Karkheh River delta at the upper Holocene is not constant, and this led to recognizable changes in the delta.

The Almabulagh complex is located in the Sanandaj-Sirjan structural zone, NW of Hamadan. This complex consists of low-grade metamorphic rocks and two intrusions of felsic and mafic rocks. In this research, we studied the mafic intrusion. The intrusion has ophitic, subophitic and inter-granular textures and is mainly composed of plagioclase, clinopyroxene, amphibole and minor amounts of K-feldspar, quartz and opaque minerals. Secondary minerals include epidote, chlorite and amphiboles formed in the rim of clinopyroxene. Clinopyroxene is of augite type; amphibole is tschermakite; plagioclase is in the range of andesine-labradorite; K-feldspar is anorthoclase; and the opaque mineral is ilmenite. According to the bulk rock geochemistry and mineral chemistry of clinopyroxene, the mafic intrusion of the Almabulagh complex has been crystallized from a calc-alkaline magma and is related to subduction zone. In spider diagrams Nb displays a distinctive negative anomalies compared to the primitive mantle, which suggest a possible subduction-related magmatism. Emplacement temperature and pressure of mafic rocks measured by pyroxene-amphibole thermometer and amphibole barometer indicate temperature and pressure ranges of 750 to 900 °C and 6 to 7 kbar, respectively. Based on Sm/Yb and La/Sm ratios, the parental melt of the mafic rocks of the Almabulagh complex derived from partial melting of garnet–spinel lherzolite. According to the bulk rock geochemistry and mineral chemistry of the mafic rocks, they formed in a subduction area during Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous before the Neo-Tethys closure in Sanandaj-Sirjan zone.

In the north and northwestern parts of Bam, extensive volcanism has occurred during Eocene time mainly composed of basic and felsic volcanic rocks associated volcanoclasitc, which are cut by different dykes. The volcanic rocks have sub alkaline and calc-alkaline to shoshonitic nature, while dykes are alkaline and potassic. In the spider diagrams, all samples show enrichment in the LILEs and depletion in the HFSs elements that coincide with the subduction related and upper crust rocks features. The studied rocks are enrichments in the LREE and show various (La/Yb)N. Andesy-basalts and andesites formed from evolution of primary magmas by MASH processes and primary magma originated from partial melting of a metasomatised spinal-lherzolitic source. Dacitic magma generated from partial melting of amphibolitic mafic lower crust while rhyolites were formed from partial melting of metagreywacke source in the crust. The dykes generated from less than 5% partial melting of metasomatized garnet- spinel-bearing lherzolitic mantle source. Eocene volcanism in Bam area ccurred during subduction of Neo-Tethys oceanic crust beneath the central Iran in a continental volcanic arc tectonic setting.

Along 80 Km length of Tehran-Qom highway, a complex of post Eocen volcanic rocks include basalt, trachyte-basalt, andesite-basalt, dacite, rhyolite and pyrocalstic rocks (tuff and ignimbrite) with sedimentary rocks are exposed. The region turned to horst and graben system by NW-SE fault systems. Grabens are covered by Pliocene-Quaternary sediments and various volcanic rocks outcrop in horsts. Volcanic rocks are mostly calc-alkaline, alkaline and rarely tholeiitic. Geochemical features of these rocks are similar to those of subduction tectonic setting and in spider diagrams, the HFSE (Nb, Ti, Y, P) show negative and the LILE (K, Rb, Cs, Sr, Ba, Th, Pb) show positive anomaly. However, Ta and Nb do not present obvious negative anomaly. Comparing the spider diagrams of the studied rocks with N-MORB shows that their magmas originated from mantle melt similar to N-MORB mantle, but from higher depth than MORB in which garnet was stable (Y negative anomaly) and plagioclase were absent (Eu positive anomaly). Spider diagrams normalized with primary mantle also confirm such a mantle source (Eu positive anomaly) that was affected by mantle driven fluids (positive anomaly of Cs, Th, K, La, Pb). Chemical composition variations of the Eocene volcanic rocks from Qom to Tehran shows that there is no geochemical polarity in this volcanic trend similar to those of subduction zones. The disagreement in geochemical results could probably be due to the slab detachment of ocean plate in the upper Cretaceous that caused a delay in subduction and continued with lower angel subduction to form a magmatic isotropy in the Central Iran. Furthermore, the presence of local extension forces with transitional effects and block rotary movements that are formed as a function of strike-slip faults above the oblique subduction zone must be considered

Majority of Iran’s anticline oil traps located in the Dezful Embayment in southwest of Iran and Zagros Fold and Thrust belt. These anticlines mostly have NW-SE trend and their southern limb have a steep to returned dip. In some cases, thrust faults and steep south west limb of anticlines caused thrusting of adjacent anticlines on the others and repetition of sequence stratigraphy. The study area covered by Aghajari and Marun anticlines in Dezful embayment and the Aghajari anticline is thrusting on the Marun. In this research, structural geometry of thrusting of Aghajari anticline on the Marun anticline were studied based on seismic reflection data and specified the repetition of sequence stratigraphy. These two anticlines have a NW–SE trends and the Marun anticline is developing in the south of the study area, and most of deformation is concentrated in Aghajari anticline. The Marun anticline formed in the middle of the study area without thrusting, while maximum amount of thrusting of Aghajari anticline on the Marun anticline occurred in this area. There is a shallow thrust in the south limb of two anticlines in the northern part and an upper thrust from Gachsaran formation exposed from progressive deformation. Finally, a shallow thrust propagates to surface in the end of NW parts and back thrusts separate from main shallow thrust. But unlike Aghajari anticline, an upper thrust from Gachsaran formation propagates to surface with continuation of deformation in the Marun anticline showing low depth of the Marun anticline.

Extending in the Zagros range, the Hormuz Series are known as the world's oldest evaporative unit. Movements related to the salt structures are one of the unique phenomena associated with Hormuz Series, which could be observed in different regions of the Zagros range. Owing to the poor outcrops of Hormuz Series, the surface evidence to assess effects of the salt tectonics is not enough, therefore subsurface data are very useful for in this regard. The isopach maps produced by the National Iranian Oil Company as well as the distribution maps of salt domes between the Kazerun and Minab faults are used to examine the effect of salt tectonics on the sedimentary setting of the Fars Basin and Bandar-Abbas hinterland from the Permian time up to the present. Accordingly, the Isopach curves are digitized in GIS environment, then the negative 3D map [before deposition] and positive [after deposition] are obtained in SURFER software. The study of changes in Late Permian to Miocene period sequences as results of salt dome activity shows that the first movements of salt domes in this area has incepted in Permo-Triassic time synchronous with the opening of Neotethys Ocean. During the period of Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous some of the salt domes have been buried and tangible actions that altered the sedimentary system, is not happening. The second main pulse of the salt dome activity coincides with the development of the Zagros foreland in the Upper Cretaceous. The peak activity of the salt domes and their impact on the sedimentary setting happened simultaneously with the final development of the Zagros foreland basin in the time frame of the Paleocene-Eocene. In Oligocene to Miocene times the salt domes were active, especially in the southeastern part of the range. This study seeks to investigate the salt domes and the result of their uplift on the sedimentary settings in the Fars basin.

Irankuh is located 20 km south of Isfahan. Late Jurassic black shale, silt and sandstones are the oldest rocks in the area that exposed in the northern flank of the Irankuh Mountain. Lower Cretaceous dolomitic limestone with some shale and marl starting with a basal conglomerate, overlay the Jurassic sediments in the area. Folds are trending NW-SE. In the northern flank of Irankuh a Kilometer scale Syncline with vertical axial plane and axis plunges of 35° to the west and an anticline with 32° plunges to the west and its exposure extended toward the southern flank of mountain. According to competency contrast of the rock units, abundant minor folds consistent with the geometry of the major structures are produced in couple of synclines and anticlines. Goushfil-Tapeh Sorkh reverse fault (75° dipping to the NE) thrust the Jurassic sediments over the Cretaceous rocks in Goushfil and Tappeh Sorkh1 Mines. Field observations indicate that it was originally a normal fault dipping to the SW and has been changed during the course of folding process to an inverted high angle reverse fault dipping to the NE close to the surface. NW-SE trending reverse faults are controlling the mineralization in the Irankuh area i.e. Goushfil-Tapeh Sorkh reverse fault.
