Natural phenomena such as the sun, the moon, stars, water, plants, fire, mountains, animals, the earth and the sky bear special value among different tribes. Mankind has sanctified these phenomena, has created signs and symbols for them and has attributed them to certain deities. Ancient Iranians cherished water and plants and considered them the signs of Mehr and Anahita. Religious rituals related to water and trees and the deities to whom they were attributed had their roots in Iran’s prehistoric culture, and continued to exist with new content in the Islamic era in such a way that worshipping Anahita has changed into shefaat (intercession) and tawassul (supplicating to God through a prophet or saint, dead or alive).
Anahita, the goddess of water, is characterized as a lady with natural features and a developed personality and is the symbol of the fertility of mankind, animals and plants. This belief has been so strong in the Persian culture that it still continued to exist after the advent of Islam into Iran. The rain ritual and recourse to Hazrat Fatehem Zahra (SA), the daughter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and Hazrat Abbas (SA), the brother of Imam Hussein (SA), replaced water rituals and recourse to Anahita. Although the form of the ritual has been preserved during the metamorphosis, the content has changed from “recourse to Anahita for bringing rain” to “recourse to Islamic divine individuals for intercession with God”. Intercession with God, of course, relies on God’s permission. Water and plants are not sacred in Islamic beliefs. Nevertheless, they are revered as cherished elements of nature in Quran due to their important role in mankind's life and their relations to ancient beliefs. A great change which took place about these rituals is the reference of the ritual. While Anahita was the reference of prayers in ancient Iran, now Islamic divine individuals are resorted to as intermediaries and intercessors, and the intercession itself depends on God’s permission.

The ancient city of Bishapour was one of the first cities that were built by Shapour after Darabgard and Ardeshirkhoreh (Gour or Firouzabad). It is among the few cities from ancient Persia that have partly remained and can therefore be used to introduce the common Persian urban structures of its own time. There have been few studies over ancient urban structures in Iran which could be used to identify their functions and the way the cities were built and developed. The scarcity of studies on this issue has been despite the fact that there has been considerable academic attention on ancient Persia. A few studies that architects and scholars of urban development have carried out over the spatial organization of Iran’s ancient cities were mostly based on unreliable documents and were not supported by archeological findings. The purpose of the present article is to introduce and analyze the process of urban development of the Sassanid city of Bishapour based on available documents as well as the archeological findings obtained from 1958 to 1978. In order to arrive at a better analysis, the Theory of Urban Spatial Organization was exploited. The Theory introduces the city as a purposeful entirety with four main elements such as the domain, the structure, the small entireties and the center. Accordingly, after analyzing the above elements in Bishapour, the spatial organization of the city is analyzed by considering the social-cultural conditions in the Sassanid era and a brief comparison is made with the general conditions of the spatial organization of an Iranian-Islamic city.

Upanishads"1, also called "Vedanta"2 or “end of Veda”, refers to the end of "Vedas"3. According to the classification of Hindu sacred works, Upanishads are supplementary writings attached to "Aranyaka"4. Based on Hindu traditions, the wise people and receivers of the Divine Commandments were the creators of Upanishads. These people, who were called "Caviya Satiya Sarvata"5, used to live deep in untouched and dark jungles of India where they meditated and studied their own self. They expressed the spiritual experiences inspired to them (by the Divine Source) and flowed within their souls, in the form of Wahdat al-Wujud (Unity of Existence), decorated them with the dressing of mysterious words, and formed them as compressed synthetic ideas. The era of jungle-life was started with the theses of "Aranyaka" and ended with Upanishads, a period which can metaphorically be called the education period in the depth of jungle.
According to Max Muller's theory, Upanishads are the oral teachings of masters (morshids) to their close followers. It must be noted that most of the prominent theoretical schools in India and even in Buddhism have originated from Upanishads.
With regard to the main subject in "Upanishads", the present paper tries to establish the specific spirituality, self-purification and the unique truth of the ancient India.

The study of the Early Neolithic period in the Urmia Lake region, in Iranian Azerbaijan, was a problem: none of the studies published so far provides convincing evidence for the Early Neolithic settlements. There are some well-known and well excavated/surveyed Neolithic sites around the Urmia Lake such as Hajji Firuz, Yanik Tepe, and Ahrendjan Tepe. Contrary to what has been posited in the site publications, the materials from these sites date back to both the Early Pottery Neolithic and the Late Neolithic, c. 6500-5000 BC. There is, however, growing evidence for traces of an Early Pottery Neolithic occupation, generally at the same horizon with Jarmo II, Sarab, Guran II and Tepe Abdul- Hosein II in Northern- Central Zagros, c.7000-6000 BC.
This paper revisits former studies on the basis of recently studied Ahrendjan- Qara Tepe in comparison to Hajji Firuz tradition. Moreover, it puts forward a new interpretation of the Early Neolithic period in the Urmia Lake region, rather than presenting some new data. In accordance with a diffusionist approach, the author finally concludes that both the Early and Late Neolithic sites of the region were affected by contemporary developments in the Northern-Central Zagros.

Reliefs, coins and seals are among the outstanding examples of Sassanid art and culture. Researchers discover new things every time they study these historical remainings. A comparison between the image of the Sassanid emperors carved into rocks and their image on Sassanid coins and metal vessels can tell us a lot about the principles based on which these images have been created. A study of ornaments, cloths and especially diadems indicates that they have symbolic and mysterious shapes which are inseparable from the Zoroastrian tradition. The Sassanid royal “Deyhim” or “Farr” (diadem) opened its way into the Roman Emperor as a result of relationship with the Sassanid Empire. Later, this ornament appeared in the battle uniforms of the Croatians of the Persian race who resided in the Europe and from there it moved to France and the rest of the Europe. At first, diadem was worn by the royal only but with time, it became a part of the formal suit of the mass.

  • The Spatial System in the Islamic City of Iran
    Seyed Amir Mansouri Pages 51-62
City as the supreme symbol of the human civilization has developed in two different directions in Iran over time: before the advent of Islam when aristocracy ruled in Iran and religious figures acted as the mediators between men and God, the city had an appearance dictated by certain individuals. After the Arab conquest of Iran, the ideology that Islam introduced, i.e. regarding all as equals, shook the foundations of the aristocratic society of the time. As a result, people realized that they could directly connect to God without any mediator and this led to the removal of the positions of certain religious figures in the country. As a result, the city in the Islamic era became a modern outcome of the Islamic civilization due to the changes in the thoughts and beliefs of the Iranians. The spatial organization of the city thus became different from the pre-Islamic era. The new city was based on the needs of the society and its strengths were the public functions of which the most important was the mosque acting as a place for social gatherings and multiple functions.
