Ventricular Fibrillation (VF) is the major cause of triggering sudden cardiac death (SCD). Efficient prediction of ventricular fibrillation is very important for clinical purpose, as this is the most serious cardiac rhythm disturbance and can be life threatening. A reliable predictor of an imminent episode of VF, could be incorporated in an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) would be capable of delivering preventive therapy. The aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of predicting VF from surface electrocardiogram (ECG) signal by beat to beat tracing of the signal and using a dynamic thresholding method. As VF arises from the lower pumping chambers of the heart (ventricles), it is expected to find some changes in the ventricular activity part of the ECG signal before its occurrence. In this paper, we focused on the T-wave of ECG signal which shows the repolarization of ventricles and tried to present an online predictor by finding an entropy-based pattern in T-waves of ECG signal that can effectively maps the irregularity of this wave before VF. We have also used an Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) method to reduce the high frequency noises of T-waves before predictive index extraction in each beat. We found that proposed predictive pattern can be considered as a useful index for probability occurrence of VF. It reached the sensitivity of 89% and specificity of 95% in online VF prediction method. Presented method is simple, computationally fast and has high prediction quality and hence is well suited for real time implementation.

This paper presents a novel approach for driving stress assessment by fuzzy clustering. In previous researches, stress during real-world driving tasks has been detected in discrete levels, but in this study, we demonstrated that considering fixed-levels for stress in long periods is not authentic. Without employing discrete levels of stress, data remains unlabeled. So a clustering method has been proposed to compensate for the lack of the feasibility of classification. Due to uncertainties, the clusters can be defined in terms of fuzzy sets. Furthermore, using fuzzy clustering methods, data overlap is considered. In the proposed algorithm, utilizing membership values generated by fuzzy c-means, and weights assigned by fuzzy inference system (FIS), we present automatic continuous criteria for stress in the short time intervals. The continuous scale is defined between 0and100, where higher values represent higher stress levels. Our findings not only confirm rough results of previous studies, but also indicate improvements in precision and accuracy of stress assessment.

Central nervous system (CNS) uses an abundant set of joints and muscles to ensure both flexible and stable movements while interacting the environment. How the CNS faces the complexity of control problem and solves the question of physiological and mechanical abundances is not still clear. Modular control is one of the most prevalent hypotheses in answer to these questions. According to this point of view, CNS combines a few building blocks, here this will be muscle activities, named as muscle synergies, to present a vast repertoires of movements. In this study the algorithm of sample-based nonnegative matrix tri-factorization (NM3F) is used to extract spatial and temporal muscle synergy modules from muscle EMG data for three different types of point to point reaching (simple straight, reversal and via-point) movement in the frontal and sagittal planes. After extracting different features of the muscle synergies, physiological interpretation of these decomposed parts has been discussed. The first temporal module coded the direction and type of movement, while the spatial modules describe some via postures. Also the extracted modules are not similar for subjects. The recruitment of the spatial and temporal modules are correlated due to the movement direction.

Multi-channels Electroencephaloram (EEG) needs a long preparation time for electrode installation. Furthermore, using a large number of EEG channels may contain redundant and noisy signals which may deteriorate the performance of the system. Therefore, channels reduction is a necessary step to save preparation time, enhance the user convenience and retain high performance for an EEG-based system. In this study, we present a simple and practical EEG-based emotion recognition system by optimizing the channels number based on two different Common Spatial Pattern (CSP) channel reduction methods. We applied feature extraction based on the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm and classification method based on the Support Vector Machine (SVM) and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) which make our proposed system an efficient and easy-to-setup emotion recognition system. According to experimental results, the proposed system using small number of channels not only does not increase the error of the system, but also improves the performance of the system compared to the use of total number of channels.

Using adaptive minimum variance beamforming (MV) results in a significant improvement in image resolution, but it’s success in enhancing contrast has not yet been satisfactory. In some researches, eigenspace-based minimum variance beamforming (EIBMV) method has been applied to medical ultrasound imaging system, so that it has improved image contrast while maintaining its resolution. In this paper we apply another eigenspace-based beamforming called eigencanceler (EC) and show it can yield more satisfactory results. However EC needs the noise – interference covariance matrix, whereas the MV and EIBMV use the data covariance matrix. So an altered EC is proposed for the ultrasound imaging. In this method, while canceling the desired signal does not occur, any weight vector is considered to lie in the noise subspace, the subspace orthogonal to the dominant eigenvectors. Otherwise, the weight vector is defined uniformly. Simulation results show the superiority of this method over the MV and EIBMV methods in the contrast aspect. Moreover, the method is more robust against the sound speed errors and can obtain images with better definition of boundaries.

Healthcare providers may need to publish their operational data for consultation as well as to allow more researches. Consequently, a lot of personal specific data with high level of details are publicly available. This data may contain time series, such as ECG. De-identification of time series is not enough to provide the requirement of privacy preservation. It is because, if a few numbers of time series are published, then appearing specific anomalies in them may reveal the sensitive information of an individual. The problem of privacy preserved time series publication is somewhat studied, but the issues of publishing the Ngrams of the time series, especially that of extracted from a small set of time series, are not considered well before.
In this paper, we address this problem and define the k-anonymity principle for the Ngram. The proposed schema aims to provide the k-anonymization by repeating the rare n-grams to hide them in the crowd of frequent n-grams. We evaluate our method by using two datasets. Results of experiments show that our method can provide the requested anonymity level with low probability and entropy information loss.
