    Background And Objective
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease along with learning and memory disorders. Oleuropein is a phenolic compound with antioxidant and neuroprotective properties that reduces oxidative stress and improves cognitive function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of oleuropein pretreatment on the colchicine- induced cognitive dysfunction using passive avoidance learning.
    Materials And Methods
Adult male rats (200-250 g) were used in this study. Oleuropein (10 and 20 mg/kg, p.o.) was used for a period of 10 days prior to colchicine administration. On the tenth day of administration, the rats were bilaterally cannulated at the CA1 area. Colchicine (15 μg/rat) was bilaterally administered into CA1 area of the hippocampus. After one week of recovery, then their learning and memory levels were investigated through passive avoidance learning test. For assessment of retention memory after 24 hours, the interval between the placement in the light chamber and the entry into the dark chamber was measured as step through latency. Furthermore, the total time spent in the dark chamber was also measured.
    Results
Administration of colchicine reduced the step through latency and augmented the time spent in the dark chamber. Administration of oleuropein (10 and 20 mg/kg) prior to colchicine (15 µg/rat) improved colchicine-induced cognitive impairment.
    Conclusion
The results showed that oral administration of oleuropein improves learning and memory impairment induced by colchicine.

    Background And Objective
Leukemia is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow that is the most common cause of cancer in children. Parents of hospitalized children with cancer will experience serious psychological problems. This research was done to compare parent’s anxiety and post-traumatic stress symptoms and mental adjustment in children hospitalized with and without cancer.
    Materials And Methods
The method of study was causal-comparison. The population was hospitalized children with leukemia in Baghiatollah and Mofid hospitals and their mothers. In addition to children without cancer, children who were hospitalized in emergency unit were also studied. In these populations, 30 children with cancer and 30 children without cancer and their mothers were selected with available sampling. The mothers of two groups of children responded the State-trait anxiety questionnaire, Impact of Event Scale – Revised and the post hospital behavior questionnaire. Data was analyzed with multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA).
    Results
Findings indicate that mothers of children with cancer as compared to mothers of children without cancer had higher levels of post-traumatic stress symptoms. Also, mental adjustment of children with cancer was less than children without cancer. The mothers of the two groups in state-trait anxiety had not a significant difference.
    Conclusion
The early identification of parents at risk for post-traumatic stress symptoms suggests that pediatric health care providers in the hospital should ask parents and their children about these symptoms and when these symptoms exist, necessary social-psychological interventions provide for them.

    Background And Objectives
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is one of the most common diseases and a public health problem in most populations and predisposes to many metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes. Inflammatory processes and oxidative stress are the important factors in pathogenesis of MetS. Also, the effect of sex, race, age, nutrition and life style is very important in incidence of this syndrome. This study was conducted to compare the activity of antioxidant enzymes and some other factors that are involved in oxidative stress in patients with metabolic syndrome.
    Materials And Methods
In this study, 37 individuals with metabolic syndrome and 31 healthy controls participated. A blood sample was taken from all subjects and serum and red blood cells were isolated. Glucose, lipid profile, uric acid, malondialdehyde and thiol groups were determined in prepared samples. Antioxidant enzymes containing superoxide dismutase (SOD, gluthatione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (Cat) were also measured in whole blood samples.
    Results
While triglycerides and blood glucose were significantly higher in subjects with metabolic syndrome as compared to control subjects, there was no significant difference for total cholesterol, HDL-Ch and LDL-Ch. A reduction in activities of SOD, GPx and Cat was observed in MetS group as compared to healthy individual (p=0.02, 0.01 and 0.03, respectively).
    Conclusion
The reduction in antioxidant enzymes SOD, GPx and Cat indicate the weakness of antioxidative defense in MetS. These states can predispose for inflammation and other complication of MetS. Using antioxidants or consuming natural products can strength the antioxidant defense and prevent the MetS complications.

    Background And Objective
The available information in relation to the effect of high-intensity interval training on lung structural changes are limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a high-intensity interval training on structural changes in lung parenchymal and non-parenchymal tissue in male Wistar rats.
    Materials And Methods
Samples of this study were 12 male Wistar rats (4 weeks old, 68±9 g), healthy, and had no history of disease and divided into training and control groups (exercise training = 6, control = 6). High-intensity interval training was carried out for 9 weeks. The samples started training program with 25 m/min (first week) and with 70 m/min at the end (ninth week). Finally, lung tissue was extracted for stereological and histological tests.
    Results
The findings showed that after 9 weeks of high-intensity interval training, parenchymal volume, number of alveoli and respiratory surface significantly decreased. Also, non-parenchymal and peribronchovascular volume significantly increased.
    Conclusion
Based on research findings, it seems that 9 weeks of high-intensity interval training leads to lung inflammation and structural disorders. These effects are possibly associated with reduction of maximum gas exchange in lung blood-gas barrier during exercise performance and challenge of overall health in lung.
