A critical investigation of the relationship between death and sin in the labors of St. Augustine Ghasem kakaie, professor of university of Shiraz Mahbubeh jabbareh naseru, PHD candidate of comparative philosophy University of Qom The question of death is one of the most common and inevitable ones in human life. It has been considered by monotheistic religions, philosophical trends and theological schools as one of the existential and epistemic concerns of mankind among whom one can point to St. Augustine, one of the most sparkling theologians in Christendom. In this article, we delve deeply into the interrelation between death and the concept of sin in the Augustine’s oeuvre. Scrutinizing his works indicates that inspired by some early Christian sources, specifically the Paul’s letters in the New Testament, he is very much more considerate of the mutual relationship between sin and death in comparison with his predecessors. In his various, voluminous treatises Augustine treats original sin as well as daily sins as the main cause of death. He opines that based on the nature of human creation, he would benefit immortality if he did not commit sins. He enumerates three kinds of death, i.e. corporeal death (when soul leaves body), death of soul (when God leaves it) and eternal death (When the soul which has already been left by God leaves the body), contending that the abovementioned kinds of death are brought about due to man’s disobedience. He asserts that the first human couple were punished on the basis of the divine just judgment due to their disobedience. Based on the idea of the presence of mankind in Adam, he extends the punishment to his descendants as well. Accordingly, every single human being suffers from the original sin. We believe that he exaggerates in his emphasis on the idea of the original sin and his outcomes so that he exonerates no one but Jesus Christ and his mother.

since distant past, the issue of Evil has been human kind’s problem in understanding the universe. This issue’s ancient background in literature and religion indicates its role in human’s worldview towards the roots of Existence, and this is in itself one of the important reasons of theological-philosophical traditions’ great attention paid to it. Philosophers and theologians have been aware that "evil" poses a serious threat to religious belief. According to Mani, whose viewpoint is deeply rooted in Iranian royal wisdom, evil or darkness resides in the nature of terrestrial creatures. Discover the rules that govern this universe which is composed of good and evil and the process of salvation and purification from it, is what Mani is going to strengthen his religion on. Mani’s thoughts has had a great impact on Iranians’ and non Iranians’ way of thinking. Augustine, for many years, believed that Mani’s religion offers the only acceptable rational interpretation of how the world is formed, because, it properly explains the source of evil. The theory of evil being a Non-being, is still believed by many scholars; some assume the “Evil” as a illusion caused by lack of Will, some others, like the ones in our Islamic tradition, assume it as a result of lack of perfection in Good, and do not consider it to have a real existence. In this paper we face the problem of explaining the existence of "evil" in the same way that Mani sees it, a kind of companionship and amalgamation and yet the apparent opposition of good and evil in our existence and universe. If we consider “Evil” as a living creature, because of its being mixed with Good, regardless of the origin of evil which Mani intended for evil, we need to look at “Evil” aesthetically, from an Existential perspective and not a Non-existential one.

Maimonides considers the Intellect as most important distinguishing factor of Mankind from other species that God has made human a gift of it. In opinion of this thinker , the benefit of this Gem determines the degrees of individuals in closeness to God. He believes the usage of reason and knowledge in arena of society causes social promotion and better interactions among people.
As a prominent Rabbi, Maimonides emphasizes that following the commandments of the Law that is harmonious with the standards of intellect and wisdom, can take the man to material and spiritual perfection and pave the way for intellectual and moral flourishing of person and society. In this relation, Maimonides introduces stages for human perfection and believes that achieving ultimate perfection i.e. metaphysical knowledge and knowing of God and his Actions provide final felicity for man. Nevertheless in opinion of this philosopher, none of these features does not justify a belief in the centrality of human beings among creatures. So he is not the goal of creation.

Is there a scope beyond Intellect that is irrational and its rules are against intellect? This question always has called the mysticism (Gnosticism/irfan) to be against philosophy. So, two domains of “Intellect” and “Beyond Intellect” and the relationship between these two have always been considered by mystics, those who study the mystic and theologians in the Christian West and Islamic East. Kierkegaard is a scholar in the field of life that in his classification of life stages, has considered the sphere of religion beyond the ethics, intellect and aesthetics. In the present research, we study the differences and similarities between these two ways of living (sphere of religion and Beyond Intellect) in the view of these two philosophers. Kierkegaard believes that the rules of the sphere of religion are irrational. Mulla Sadra has developed another theory which is considerable. In his theory, there are wits and elegances that they less have been considered. In the present paper, we try to study the intellectual principles of these two philosophers and the effects of these principles on their views.

Hadarat-e khams encompasses the levels of absolute existence and the general levels of universe in which the divine theophanies are perceived. In Gheisari and Imam Khomeini opinions, the levels of existence are divided into five Hadrats which are as follows: Divine aspect (Lahoot), Divine Empire (Jabaroot), Angelic World (Malakoot), Corporeal World (Molk) and perfect human. Form among these Hadarat, Lahoot is a part of the levels of Essence and is attributed to the level of Oneness (Vahedyat). The other three levels are believed to be the levels of Out (Kharej). The level of perfect human includes the previous Hadrats; this level isusually described as “synthetical being” (Kown-e Jame). The approach taken by Gheisari and Imam Khomeini to the study of mystical issues, particularly the Hadarat-e khams, was under the influence of the atmosphere in which they had worked and studied; thus, Imam Khomeini’s approach to mysticism has the flavor of Shia mysticism. Comparing Gheisari’s and Imam Khomeini’s opinions in some issues such as the meaning of existence, God’s names and attributes, Keys to the Absent (Mafatih-e Gheib), Chaos (Ama), thelevels of the divine essence, Kharej levels, perfect human and the like, which are all involved in Hadarat-e khams, one can distinguish the basic differences in their ideas. These differences seen in their way of thinking come into sight more significantly especially when it comes to the issue of Muhammadan Reality (Haghighat-e Mohammadie) and Alawi Reality (Haghighat-e Alawie) that was added to Imam Khomeini’s mystical viewpoints.

The issue of religious diversity, the religious truth and salvation of the followers of religions is one of the important issues of religious studies, especially philosophy of religion. On this issue there are three viewpoints: religious exclusivism, religious inclusivism and religious pluralism. This study reviews Cantwell Smith's viewpoint about the issue of religious diversity. Wilfred Cantwell Smith (1916-2000) is one of the contemporary scholars in religious studies and one of the thinkers of the twentieth century with extensive knowledge in various fields of the humanities. He is one of the best historians of the twentieth century in the comparative study of religion. The Study of Cantwell Smith's works and his views on religious diversity show that he is follower of religious pluralism. Smith's life, personal beliefs and communication with people of other faiths is an influential factor in shaping his pluralistic vision. His experience with other religions, kept him from general thinking about the other religions, and he gradually came to the conclusion that they are not unsaved and without God; but their lives, just like Christians, has religious features and traits. Type of his communication and administrative and social activities in convergence Christian sects and followers of different religions, reflects his pluralistic spirit and thought. According to Smith's personal approach in religious studies, his emphasis on the distinction between internal and external aspects of religion, emphasizing on the inner aspect of religion, i.e. faith, personal faith and incapacity of others in approve or reject faith, his pluralistic view can be inferred. According to Smith, the study of religion is to investigate the meaning of the appearances of religion in the eyes of those who believe in it, study people's faith and survey persons, not study data. Smith believes that the concepts of faith and cumulative tradition should be used instead of the word religion. For him, faith is a personal experience or personal connection with the transcendent. The materials and visible subjects of religion are cumulative tradition. Faith is unique; but since faith has no form, except when expressed in certain forms, it is always diverse and varied. He likens faith to love. Love can be expressed in various forms in words and behavior and is at the heart of people and beyond these expressions. Cantwell Smith explicitly denies the theory of one true religion and believes in plurality of true religion. He also believes in the oneness of God (or the absolute reality) and denies the unbreakable bond between God and religion. Smith's view about the truth and salvation of other religions is also pluralistic. According to Smith, the truth of religion is the quality of one's faith. He believes that the saving truth is in all religious traditions and in every person with pure faith. According to him, all the words, actions, rituals and religious principles are tools pushing people to the sublime. He is opposed to religious exclusivism and put it in conflict with the Christian teachings. Smith also rejects religious inclusivism and believes that no religious tradition can fully know God. He argued that the salvation is in "human heart" and is obtained with "nostalgia and the love of God". In Smith's view, God can be known partially and there is no complete and definitive knowledge about God. Another Cantwell Smith's ideas, is "the unity of humankind’s religious history ", from which the equality of all religions or religious pluralism is inferred. The context of this unique historic process is one reality of faith and beyond this, is one God or the transcendent. The theory of the unity of humankind’s religious history indicates equality of different religious traditions that shape this history. Smith accepts the reality of religious diversity, and never says different religions are the same. He says that different religions (i.e. forms and manifestations of faith) historically linked together. In other words, religious history is unique; because different forms and expressions of faith around the world are linked together. The truth of all religions (i.e. the faith) is the same and the difference is in the cumulative tradition and all religions are equal in truth and salvation. As a result, Cantwell Smith based on the definition of religion, is a religious pluralist in religious truth and salvation.
