In this paper an analytical method for back electromotive force (EMF) calculation of axial flux brushless DC (BLDC) motors is presented. The analytical method uses Maxwell equations and solves Laplace’s equation in several regions of motor. Laplace’s equation is solved in the rectangular coordinate system by using of Fourier analysis and the method of separation of variables to give the scalar magnetic potentials, and then magnetic flux density is calculated by using of scalar magnetic potentials. Average magnetic flux density is introduced to compute back EMF. The effect of flux leakages in inner and outer radii is considered by using of airgap permeance and inner and outer permeances ratio. The proposed analytical method gives back EMF harmonic components. This analytical method requires less computational time than conventional 3D finite element methods and is therefore suitable for designing and optimization purposes. The proposed analytical model validated by comparing its results to corresponding 3D finite element analysis.

In this research, temporal and spatial variability of the magnetic anomaly induced by hydro-physical parameters have been simulated using MIT-gcm numerical model. In this modeling, the discretization of equations has been done using finite volume method. The results specify the space and seasonal variability of magnetic anomaly in the study region. In winter and spring, a magnetic anomaly can be observed in the south of Persian Gulf, which its maximum intensity reaches from 30nT in winter to 20nT in spring. In summer, two magnetic anomaly bands form in the north and south of the Persian Gulf. In autumn, these two narrow bands shift to the Centre of the Persian Gulf and combine together then produce an extended band of anomaly of magnetic field in the center of the Persian Gulf.

Multi-phase motors are increasingly used in electrical systems due to their benefits such as decreased current without decreasing voltage, decrease of DC link current and improved reliability. Major applications of such motors are naval systems, electric vehicles, spacecrafts and etc. besides, permanent magnet motors has gained researchers’ attention due to their simple design, high efficiency and power density, low volume and weight and minimum loss and noise. However, electrical motors companies are under pressure and they have to present devices with minimum financial charges. The first and the most important aspect in electrical machines design is to decrease the volume and weight and consequently improve their power density and efficiency. In other word, improvement is done by optimizing machines’ dimensions. This thesis presents design optimization of five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors to use in underwater vehicles. For this purpose, motor is optimized using optimization Bees algorithm (BA) to have less volume and weight and best operational characteristics. Then, motor is simulated using Ansoft Maxwell which is based on finite element analysis. This software gives required information about performance of the motor. Finite element analysis is an accurate and valid method which is used extensively in analyzing such problems.

Direction-of-arrival estimation is one of the most important tasks in adaptive antenna array systems. In designing such systems, the goal is achieving the best direction finding performance with minimum number of elements. For studying the direction-of-arrival performance in antenna arrays, the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) method is a reasonable approach. With accurate signal reception modeling in antenna arrays, one can be reached out more accurate CRLB performance. Concerning real antenna radiation pattern for every element of antenna array that is achieved via electromagnetic simulation software and inserting in the system signal reception model, CRLB behavior analysis of a real antenna array that perform direction-of-Arrival estimation algorithm can be done. In this paper, the CRLB study of a typical 4-elements GPS antenna array at L1 frequency band is done. Furthermore, the ambiguity resolution performance of this antenna array with full signal reception modeling is demonstrated.

In this paper design method and measurement results of the antennas with square-toploadings (STL) as the modified versions of sectionalized Loran transmitter (SLT) antennas are presented. An advantage of the proposed antenna is the improved reactance using additional toploaded wires. Comparison between the proposed antenna and previous structures indicates that the radiation resistance is multiplied by two and the realized gain is improved 6 dB. The final structure with 100 m height is fabricated and its photographs are indicated. The radiation pattern of the realized antenna is obtained by turning around the antenna and recording the power amplitude. The position of each point is obtained using GPS and the distance differences are compensated for the radiation pattern. Therefore a symmetrical pattern is obtained and only the effects of natural objects like mountains or large buildings are observed in the radiation pattern. Finally, the antenna impedance is measured using vector network analyzer and the predicted results are validated successfully.

In this research, the GPR method has been employed to identify subsurface in-homogeneities along Isfahan main power line tunnel as an application in geotechnical engineering practices. To this goal, the GPR response of common 2D synthetic models including horizontal cylinder, 2D prism and arbitrary polygon corresponding to targets encountered in usual geotechnical practices were simulated first. To achieve this objective, an improved 2D finite difference algorithm developed for forward modeling in frequency domain, was used in MATLAB programming environment. Next, the GPR response of 3D synthetic models containing vertical cylinder and sphere (representing usual form of cavities) was produced by means of GPRMAX3D software for more detailed and realistic interpretations. To detect probable subsurface in-homogeneities including different types of manmade buried installations, subsidence and buried wells along the Isfahan main electric power line tunnel, 14 longitudinal GPR profiles covering more than 1200 meters along the tunnel axis were surveyed. The data were collected using a 250 MHz GPR system equipped with shielded antennas. The interpretation of final radargrams after applying different filters revealed that the GPR method is capable of detecting the location and type of subsurface in-homogeneities. In order to verify the performance and ability of GPR method in solving geotechnical problems encountered in real geological conditions and in particular the results obtained in current case study, a vertical borehole was drilled at one of in-homogeneities found on the radargrams which had been interpreted as a buried abandoned well. The result was in agreement with the respective interpreted radargram.
