When an underground space is drilled, the state of stresses is changed and a disturbance is created in the mechanical behavior of the surrounding Area. Stability of an underground space is provided by support systems. One of the most important loads in designing tunnel support system is environmental rock/soil loads. So far different methods have been represented to estimate the rock load such as empirical, analytical and numerical method that is based on engineering classification of rock. The aim of this study was to evaluate empirical and numerical methods of estimation of rock load on the segmental tunnel support system according to instrumentation data in the tunnel to transfer water from the Zayanderood dam to the city of Kashan. The results of numerical simulations, shows nearer results to field data.
    Introduction
In order to estimate the Rock load on tunnels, empirically, analytically or numerically methods those are useable for tunnel design engineers. Empirical methods are based on local observations, the required parameters in the project, comparing them with past experience and at last are based on the conclusions and determine the forces. In numerical method based on analysis stress, displacement and plastic zone is determined and rock load calculated. The most important advantage of this method for the simultaneous determination of the load on support system and deformation occurred in the rock mass. In estimating the Rock load for each of these methods sometimes large differences can be observed between the results from different methods.
Methodology and Approaches : In this research, all experimental methods available in the literature were evaluated. The SAP2000 and PLAXIS-2D software numerical modeling has been done. The results of empirical and numerical methods are compared with the results of field work and instrumentation and its results have been analyzed and interpreted. The results of the internal forces in the lining of software PLAXIS analysis and the results of the internal forces in the software SAP2000 (based on the rock of experimental methods) were compared and interpreted.
    Results and
    Conclusions
Based on the results of numerical simulations, estimates of the analysis in Plaxis software for all host rock mass conditions, shows nearer results to field data. According to the analysis, the results of Goel & Jethwa and Goel et al. that based on RMR classification system using RMR Basic values as the closest approximation to field data to estimation of rock load have been introduced.

The effect of twin tunnels excavation on ground settlement and adjacent piles is investigated using numerical analysis and comparison to field monitoring records. Shiraz metro twin tunnels in vicinity of southern ring road bridge are selected as a case study. The result shows the surface settlement is started about three times the tunnel diameter in front of tunnel excavation head and it reaches to a steady state, gently. Vertical displacement of piles is constant due to its stiffness and they can control the ground settlement. Pile axial force and bending moment increases gradually and reaches to maximum amount at tunnel adjacent. The nearest pile has the most force and moment.
Summary : The interaction of twin tunnels and adjacent bridge foundation are modeled numerically using Flac3D software. The ground surface subsidence, adjacent piles axial force and bending moment variation are investigated.
    Introduction
Tunneling in weak grounds causes stress and strain variation, which may have a considerable effect on near structures such as pile foundations. The movements of the piles caused by the ground movements and the additional forces and bending moments induced in the piles should be considered by the designers to ensure structural serviceability. In order to analyze the interaction of twin tunnels and near foundation, a pile group has been investigated using the finite difference program FLAC3D. The deformations, loads, and moments induced on existing pile foundations during the tunneling process are discussed.
Methodology and Approaches : In this paper, the tunnel, adjacent piles and surrounding rock mass have been numerically simulated using 3D finite difference method. The results of obtained displacement are compared with real recorded settlement at Shiraz metro twin tunnel project.

    Results and
    Conclusions
It is necessary to simulate and monitor the building displacement in vicinity of tunneling projects. Suitable location, placement and property of pillars can control the ground settlement. The surface settlement is started about three times the tunnel diameter in front of tunnel excavation head. Axial force and bending moment variation due to various overburden height to tunnel diameter ratio are investigated. The pile axial force and bending moment is increased at lower and higher ratio, respectively.

Summary : Urban development and rapid extension of cities have been accompanied by a considerable growth in mechanized tunneling. Commonly precast concrete segments are used as a tunnel lining which constitutes relatively considerable part of tunnelling cost. The Optimum design of lining that decreases tunnelling cost, especially in tunnels with large diameters and high lengths, needs an accurate evaluation of loads acting on the lining. Laboratory model tests conducted under gravity or in a centrifuge allow one to investigate the most relevant factors influencing the tunnel behavior. Testing results also provide valuable data for refining the chosen numerical model.
    Introduction
Because of its vantages into conventional excavation methods such as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), mechanized shield tunneling becomes the most important tunneling method in recent years, especially in urban areas.
The Optimum design of lining needs an accurate evaluation of loads acting on the lining. The various aspects of soft ground tunnelling have been studied with several methods such as empirical methods, numerical and physical modelling and Analysis of instrumented projects and field trials. Although advances in computational techniques have led to extensive numerical and analytical tunneling research being conducted, geotechnical engineering researchers depend heavily on physical modeling to understand different phenomena related to excavation of tunnels.
Methodology and Approaches : In this paper, the effects of surface buildings specifications, tunnel depth and surface surcharge on lining loads were studied. For this purpose a 1/40 small scale physical model is used. 1g models allow one to investigate complex systems in a controlled environment and are considered to be more economical compared to centrifuge or field investigations.Despite the limitation ofrealistically simulation of in situ stresses 1g models have long been used in soft ground tunnelling research. The geometry of tunnel, lining segments and the surrounding soil properties are adapted from the under construction of Tabriz urban railway line 2 project.
    Results and
    Conclusions
Based on obtained results, as a general rule, the existence of surface buildings will cause the lining loads increase compared to the green-field condition. However, the influence value depends on the combination of geometrical and mechanical parameters of the tunnels, buildings and surrounding soil. For shallow tunnels these effects is greater and with increase of tunnel depth building effects decrease.

In this paper, a physical model has been used to investigate the settlement of twin tunnels in sand with two different relative densities. This physical model is built in Sahand University of Technology, which includes a setup to model the tunneling process and a sand pluviator to preparation of uniform samples with different relative densities. The soil displacements were obtained using image processing technique. The results show that the Gaussian distribution curve provides an adequate approximation to the shape of the measured settlement data for each tunnel in dense sand. However, in loose sand due to the narrow shape of the settlement trough, this method does not provide a good description of the displacements. In order to obtain a better fit to the observed soil settlement, a new equation is suggested in this paper.
    Introduction
Many researchers have investigated the settlement of twin tunnels and most of them reported an increase in volume loss in the second tunnel and an asymmetric settlement for twin tunnels. However, most of these reports include case studies and numerical modeling. Therefore, there is a lake of laboratory results especially in sands. In addition, pervious researches on single tunnel show that the relative density of sand has a significant influence on the magnitude and the shape of the settlement too. Therefore investigating this subject is important for twin tunnels.
Methodology and Approaches : In this research in order to assess the ground loss around the tunnel, the pipes system has been used. This system consists of two pipes with different diameters. The small internal pipe is placed inside a larger external pipe. The gap between two pipes controls the magnitude of the volume loss. A strongbox was made of steel with a plexiglass front to allow measuring the surface and the subsurface displacements by using a digital camera. The tunnel model placed in strongbox and the sand was poured using a traveling sand pluviator. The image processing technique has been used for analyzing the displacement of the soil particles.
    Results and
    Conclusions
The following main conclusion can be drawn from this study:-The new suggested equation provides a good approximation to the measured settlements data for the single and twin tunnels in sandy soil.
    - For both loose and dense sands, the volume loss increases around the second tunnel but this increase is more significant for the loose sandy soil.
    - In loose sandy soil due to the narrow shape of the settlement trough, there are two distinct peaks in surface settlement. However, in dense sand a single settlement trough is obtained near the surface.

Summary : The case of the Shiraz (Iran) subway twin tunnel construction is an example of transport network extension. In this work, a three dimensional model of the shielded mechanized tunneling of the Shiraz subway was simulated using FLAC3D software to study the excavation influence of a new tunnel on an existing one. Also, the joint pattern in segmental lining is studied.
    Introduction
Due to the fast development of Iranian metropolises, a wide urban underground transport network is necessary. Thus, the prediction of the influence of mechanized tunneling method on the surface settlement is important in terms of design and construction. In recent decades, extensive studies around the world have focused on considering the effect of mechanized shield tunneling on the surrounding ground.
Methodology and Approaches : In the present paper, a 3D numerical model was developed to investigate the tunnel's lining behavior and the ground displacement surrounding the second line of the Shiraz subway tunnels. All the excavation phases of EPB-TBM (Earth pressure balanced, Tunneling Boring Machine) were simulated using the Finite Difference Method (FLAC3D). Furthermore, a new simple method were proposed to take account of the TBM shield conical shape. Also, to achieve an accurate simulation, the influence of the geometry of the longitudinal joints had been investigated on the lining behaviour.
    Results and
    Conclusions
The numerical results indicated the necessity of using segmental lining with oblique joints pattern to obtain an accurate evaluation of the structural forces applied in segmental lining. In this work, the influence of the longitudinal distances between the tunnel faces on the surrounding ground displacement and the induced lining forces was investigated. The excavation of a new tunnel near to an existing tunnel with high lagging distance between twin tunnels leads to increase in the normal and the longitudinal displacements, in the internal lining forces and to a decrease in the ground surface settlement above the tunnels.
