Pages 9-20Language acquisition is a natural developmental process and is unique to Homo sapiens in which a child acquiring his or her mother tongue as a first language. The simplest theory of language development is that children learn language by imitating adult language. A second possibility is that children acquire language through conditioning. Noam Chomsky put forward innateness hypothesis. Piaget argued that language is a cognitive process and that linguistic development depends on general cognitive development. Lev Vygotsky proposed that although children have innate cognitive bases for language acquisition, the actual learning begins with functions that children want to express. Finally, the connectionist theory of language development suggested that children acquire language without ever figuring out the rules or even that there are rules. Although a great deal of research has been conducted, it still is not known exactly how children are able to succeed in the remarkable feat of language acquisition. Some attempts to relate cognitive and linguistic development using the Piagetian stages have not been successful. Major advances have occurred in understanding both linguistic and cognitive development, but these advances have not been shown to have a close relationship. It is not possible with the present state of knowledge to choose definitively from the different theories. It seems logical that a combination of imitative skills, an innate language acquisition device, cognitive development, and social communication interactions contribute to language development. Keywords: Constructivism, Interactionism, Language development, Nativism.

Pages 21-26BackgroundSome obstacles and inefficiencies in deaf education system may be attributed to the fact that the right to education and equality of opportunities for national core curriculum, and the need for learning Farsi language are not met separately among deaf students. In fact, the distinction between these two educational challenges is not addressed to deaf pupils in particular. Based on the findings of Iranian and foreign scholars, this study claims that an Iranian deaf student is characterized as a bilingual and Farsi is not his/her first language.ConclusionTherefore, a bilingual educational strategy is proposed here for teaching the deaf. The official core curriculum will be taught through Iranian Sign Language, i.e. the first and natural language of the deaf. At the same time, Farsi language will be taught by using certain second language teaching methods. Keywords: Deaf education, Bilingualism, Iranian sign language, Second language teaching

Pages 27-34BackgroundThis study provides a brief review on the history of deaf community and the sign languages in order to describe the position of deaf people around the world in general and in Iranian particular. The research and evaluation of deaf individual from different aspects can result in a better knowledge of sign languages and their significance. Historically, deaf people have been examined from two main various perspectives: a medical viewpoint which considers a deaf individual handicapped missing the senses; and a sociological viewpoint which characterizes deaf people as social individuals, with certain cultures and languages similar to all other nations and groups. The first led to speech/ oral movements and approaches such as syncretistic method; while the second resulted in sign languages/ hand movements. However, the medical viewpoint caused deaf individuals to become isolated and thus various sign languages faded. The sociological viewpoint contributed to linguistic research and studies and deaf people’s empowerment, thereby resulted in the development of the deaf community and the world. Like oral languages, sign languages are fully-fledged and contain all linguistics components available; they also include a wide range of dialects and accents.ConclusionBecause of using signs, deaf people enjoy an enhanced vision; this leads to unique creativity and cultural and comprehension capabilities which pave the ground for developing various scientific disciplines. Here, the subjects will be discussed in future details. Keywords: Oral movement, Hand movement, Medical viewpoint, Sociological viewpoint, Sign language

Pages 35-42BackgroundThe most common and significant learning disabilities include reading disorders. Reading is the foundation for all other learning, and children with weak reading skills are more vulnerable learners through their education and future, thereby failed to show significant progress in academic learning outcomes.ConclusionReading covers a language learning system and it is a subset of lingual skills. Linguistic difficulties constitute the main core of reading disorders; hence, practitioners in this discipline are required to take the initiative in effective interventional programs, not only as to provide opportunities to practice and develop active learning, but also as to stimulate and strengthen linguistic components of reading. Keywords: Learning difficulties, Reading disorder, Language

Pages 43-56BackgroundSpelling is characterized as a basic skill for the children’s writing literacy. A wide range of factors may contribute to the formation and/ or intensification of problems related to teaching writing competencies, so that spellings come with a serious challenge called “invented spelling”. It is also a major concern for teachers and parents of children with visual impairments. Therefore, the current study investigates causes of spelling weakness in students with visual impairment and provides educational strategies for the solution.MethodA descriptive-analytical research method is applied, through a library survey. Psychological problems such as weakness in touch and hearing processing, attention deficiency, and educational topics are some factors leading to lower grades of blinded students. However, the lack of concentration, absence of books in Braille and tendency toward audio devices, writing and reading challenges with Braille and teacher’s poor feedback due to laborious nature for reading and refinement of texts in Braille, inadequate information and weak feedback from the environment, low levels of phonemic awareness, access to mass media just through hearing, lack of access to specialized education for affected students, reliance on remaining visual power, families’ insecurity and resilience towards the use of Braille by their children, and motivational problems are further factors that impose a burdens on psychological difficulties of children with visual impairments.ConclusionClear and early diagnosis, using appropriate strategies for memory enhancement, and considering different learning styles and psychological characteristics of each child are certainly useful for these students. Keywords: Spelling weakness, Teaching strategies, Memory enhancement, Students with vision impairments

Pages 57-66BackgroundAccording to the latest definition presented by American Psychiatric Association within the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) published may 2013, a specific learning disabilities characterized as a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects individual learning. In this edition, the term “learning disability” was changed to the “specific learning disability” (SLD). Current approaches to the identification of learning disabilities are in transition. Indeed, this topic covers curriculum-based measurement (CBM), alternative research-based method, IQ- achievement discrepancy model and the response-to-intervention (RTI) approach. Because of delayed detection, the IQ-achievement discrepancy criteria are labeled as the waiting-for-failure model, excluded from the study and replaced by the RTI procedure. The identification process of students with SLD includes determination, referral, assessment and eligibility for special education.ConclusionThe study concludes with some guidelines for teachers and parents. However, identification approaches and stages, as well as recommendations for teachers and parents need to be paid particular attention. Keywords: Identification approaches, Specific learning disability, Response to intervention

Pages 67-76BackgroundThe aim of the study was to investigate the scientific framework for research on language, speech, and communication impairments among children with cerebral palsy (CP) as well as providing more appropriate information from previously conducted studies.MethodThe research resources are collected through a library research and using appropriate internet websites. Also, relevant books, articles and dissertations are considered.ResultsDysarthria is a major outcome of cerebral palsy in children, affected by the severity of neurological injury. The level of dysarthria varies from one child to another. In addition to speech difficulties, some children show signs of swallowing or mouth-watering disorders because of structural or neurological damages. Further, these children have lesion injuries (both language comprehension and speech) which depend on the severity of cerebral palsy.ConclusionRegarding the extent of brain injury in cerebral palsy and neurological involvement, therapeutic plans are required to cover various aspects such as sense, movement, cognition, language, speech, communication, emotion and psychological issues. Obviously, health improvements for these children will be the product of full cooperation of treatment group, including rehabilitation specialists, family and school officials. Keywords: Cerebral palsy, Dysarthria, Speech, language damages
