The experiment was conducted in the greenhouse at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka 1207, Bangladesh during September 2015 to February 2016. Four different types of growing substrates, such as, M1 = 60% rice husk + 30% coconut coir + 10% vermicompost, M2 = 60% coconut coir + 30% brocken brick + 10% vermicompost, M3 = 60% sawdust + 30% brocken brick + 10% vermicompost, and M4 = 60% ash + 30% brocken brick + 10% vermicompost were used in this experiment. Growth and physiological parameters of lettuce were measured in this experiment. The maximum number of leaves per plant (21.44) and the highest fresh weight (92.49 g plant-1) were recorded from M1 while the lowest in M3. Therefore, the study revealed that the rice husked based growing substrates can be used for growing lettuce cv. ‘Legacy’ in aggregate soilless system in the tropics like Bangladesh.

The study was conducted from December 2017 to May 2018 to depict reliable and effective technique of seed priming in spring rice variety. The laboratory analysis was performed in the Regional Seed Testing Laboratory, Sundarpur, Kanchanpur under controlled conditions. The completely randomized design with 6 treatments- without priming, water/ hydro-priming, 2% urea priming, 2% DAP priming, 2% MOP priming and 2% ZnSO4 priming with 4 replications was used. Two different experimental setups were made for germination and emergence test using germination paper roll and sand tray method. Meanwhile, the parameters like germination percentage, germination energy, vigor index, root length and shoot length at 7 DAS and emergence percentage were remarkably affected. However, the parameters like the speed of germination and shoot length, fresh weight and dry weight at 10th, 15th and 20th DAS were not affected significantly by the priming treatments. The priming treatment with 2% MOP solution gave the best results for germination percentage (93.5%), germination energy (92.5%), vigor index (138.1) and emergence percentage (93.0%). 2% urea priming treatment resulted in longest root length (12.04 cm) and shoot length (7.97 cm) at 7 DAS. This study suggests seed priming with 2% MOP solution as an easy and effective technique for improving the germination, emergence and seedling parameters of spring rice, variety Hardinath-1.

The present trial aimed to evaluate the effect of three media including WPM, MS and modified QL and three different hormone combinations (0, 0.5 and 1 mgL-1 BAP) with 0.1 mgL-1 GA3 and 0.1 mgL-1 IBA on regeneration of two sweet cherry cultivars cvs “Siyah-e-Mashhad” and “Takdane”. All experiments were arranged in completely randomized designed. Each treatment contained three replicates. The meristem explants were introduced in culture media supplemented with different hormonal combinations and maintained in a growth room at a 16h photoperiod (36 μmol.m-2.s-1), 25 ± 1ºC. After six weeks, Survival, necrosis and contamination percent with the number of leaf were studied. The results showed that highest survival rate was in modified QL medium complemented with 1 mgL-1 BAP and the least one was in MS medium without BAP treatments for both cultivars. Necrosis rate was high in MS (100-83.3%) in control for “Takdane” and “Siyah-e-Mashhad” cultivars, respectively that don’t have any differences with 0.5 mgL-1 BAP. The most Leaf number (12) observed in modified QL medium supplemented with 1 mgL-1 BAP in “Takdane” cultivar and the least one (2) was in MS medium without BAP application (control) in “Siyah-e-Mashhad” cultivar.
