Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods are employed for increasing oil recovery after natural production of the reservoir. Each EOR process has limitation for applying in reservoirs due to rock and fluid condition. In water alternating gas (WAG) flooding, many parameters such as reservoir thickness, horizontal permeability, connate water saturation effect on oil recovery factor. In this study, main parameters that effect on WAG oil recovery were discussed using fraction factorial design and simulation. The CMG-GEM was used for simulation study. The Minitab statistical experimental design software was used for stochastic analysis. The results show reservoir thickness, connate water saturation, and the interaction of two parameters reservoir dip angle and horizontal permeability had main effect on oil recovery factor. Finally, a regression model based on the effective parameters was obtained. This regression model can be used to estimate the oil recovery during WAG flooding. According to the results of this study, the performance of WAG process in different candidate reservoirs can be predicted and one can rank the reservoirs to select the one with maximum recovery factor for further detailed reservoir and pilot studies.

A waste heat recovery unit is a heat exchanger that transfers the high temperature waste heat of a process to another part of that usually increases efficiency. In this paper, the effect of using waste heat recovery unit for preheating of water/glycol mixture of city gate station bath heater is thermodynamically investigated. Water bath heaters are common heating systems used in city gate stations which heats high pressure gas before passing regulators. Governing equations (mass and energy conservation equations) on the heater performance is solved using EES software and the results are compared with/without using waste heat recovery unit. As a case study, a city gate station located in cold climate of Iran (Shahrekord) with nominal capacity of 120000 SCMH has been considered. Comparison of the results show that the energy consumption of heaters is decreased by about 50% using heat recovery unit during a year which results in approximately 82200$ cost saving. The heater efficiency is also increased by about 20%.

Nitrogen expansion processes are suitable for mini or small-scale liquefied natural gas plants, due to their simplicity and less equipment. However, they consume a high amount of energy and any attempt to reduce the energy consumption and improve the quality of energy (work potential of energy), leads to enhance the process efficiency and profitability. A mini-scale nitrogen dual expander natural gas liquefaction process is simulated and analyzed by Aspen HYSYS simulator. Then, in order to optimize energy performance of the process, some influencing variables are adjusted using the genetic algorithm approach provided by MATLAB software in two separate optimization cases with different objective functions. Specific energy consumption and total exergy destruction are considered as the objective functions of the optimization cases (namely energy and exergy cases), which represent quantity and quality of energy, respectively. The most important operating variables of the process, refrigerant molar flow, refrigerant temperatures and refrigerant pressures, are selected via a sensitivity analysis. The results indicate that in both of the optimization cases, the specific power consumption of the process is reduced 7.1%. However, the total exergy destruction for exergy case decreases 9.55% which is slightly a more desirable result than the energy case. Also, total exergy efficiency of the process in exergy case is 4.4% higher than the other case which reveals that considering the quality aspect of energy as the objective can improve the performance of the process more appropriately.

Hydraulic and flow capacity of a gas transmission pipeline is usually affected by different parameters. These parameters are pipeline parameters, gas parameters, system parameters, heat transfer parameters, compression parameters and compressor fuel consumption parameters. Pipeline parameters are diameter, length, effective pipeline roughness and drag factor. Gas parameters are specific gravity, flowing gas compressibility factor and gas viscosity. System parameters are inlet pressure, outlet pressure, flowing gas temperature and elevation change. Heat transfer parameters are burial depth, soil temperature, soil thermal conductivity, and insulation thickness and insulation thermal conductivity. In this study the effect of these parameters on pipeline hydraulics has been investigated and results show that the change of inlet pressure (about 1%) has the greatest effect on flow change (is about 1% to 10%) in pipeline conditions.

Rate of penetration (ROP) model is a mathematical relation between bit penetration rate and properties of formation, drilling fluid and drilling operation conditions. Due to relatively high cost of drilling operations, it is essential to develop an accurate prediction of the ROP to estimate the drilling time and costs. In this paper, a new model has been developed for estimation of ROP in one of Iranian oil fields by implementation genetic programming. In the developed model, ROP has been correlated with 11 effective parameters reported in drilling master log and sonic log including weight on bit, bit rotational speed, total nozzle area size, mud weight, mud yield point, fluid loss and sonic time. For the evaluation of the proposed model, statistical parameters including root-mean-square deviation (RMSD), squared correlation coefficient (R2) and average absolute relative deviation (AARD) were calculated. Real data verification indicated that the developed model is accurate for estimating ROP and can provide useful information when drilling operation is running. The values of squared correlation coefficient and root-mean-square deviation show the reliability of the model.
