The trend of globalization of trade and economy and the development and growth of ports has determined the primary goal of being a hub for major ports. These ports can play a dominant role in the economic development of countries by attracting large volumes of cargo and distributing them to smaller ports. Given the critical geographical location in the region and the importance of shipping in the Asian continent, Iran can achieve this status and be among the advanced countries by developing its ports via increasing its share of maritime transport. In this research, the significant and effective factors on hubbing for ports have been investigated in numerous studies. A total of 37 important and valid factors were identified. Afterward, applying Fuzzy TOPSIS method and opinion of twelve experts in the maritime field, the potentiality of five southern ports of the country, including Chabahar, Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, Khorramshahr and Bandar Imam were evaluated. At the end of the assessment, respectively, Bandar Abbas, Bandar Imam, Chabahar, Bushehr, and Khorramshahr have the most potentiality for being a hub.

This study examines the productivity of container loading and discharging operation in container terminals using automated and semi-automated Quayside Cranes (QSCs). It analyses the automated cycle time of the operation and introduces a comprehensive definition for the productivity of Quayside (QS) operation. It is argued that a considerable saving in the cycle time of loading and discharging of containers can be achieved by the introduction of automated technologies at the QS. This will help the terminal operators to significantly reduce the turnaround time of containerships at container terminals. The study also sets up a basis for calculating the number of QSCs, transfer and stacking equipment by considering their productivity value and cycle times.

In this study, Reverse phase dispersive liquid–liquid micro extraction (RP-DLLME) method coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) have been successfully developed for pre-concentrate of ultra-trace amounts of 2-chlorophenol and 2,4-dichlorophenpl from marine sediments after primary ultrasonic extraction. In this method, alkaline water was chosen as extraction solvent instead of organic solvent and other factors including pH, extraction time, type and volume of disperser solvents were optimized. Under optimal conditions, linear ranges for 2-chlorophenol and 2-4-dichlorophenol were between 0.001-2 mg.Kg-1 and 0.2-2 mg.Kg-1, respectively. The preconcentration factor of 101, 102 and the relative standard deviation (n=5) 5.9, 3.3 as well as limit of detection 0.01, 0.006 µg.kg-1 were obtained for 2-chlorophenol and 2,4-dichlorophenol, respectively. Finally, using the high sensitivity, low organic solvent consumption and waste generation procedure, 2-chlorophenol and 2,4-dichlorophenol contents in marine sediments from several locations in Chabahar Bay (southeast Iran) were estimated at 0.21-2.18 mg.Kg-1 and 0.68-2.55 mg.Kg-1, respectively.

The safety of life at sea is the major priority of international shipping industry. In this regard, the issues such as seafarer training, improvements to navigational safety and the promotion of effective safety culture have been appropriately and effectively addressed by international maritime regulatory bodies such as IMO. Human error contributes to more than 80% of all maritime accidents. In many cases, the information that could prevent the accident is available to but not used appropriately by those responsible for safe navigation of the vessels concerned. This is mainly because of the lack of sufficient knowledge in using navigational equipment and interpretation of the available information. Therefore, the importance of maritime training cannot be neglected. This paper aims to highlight the issue of global seafarer’s shortage in the future, and its effect on Maritime Education and Training (MET). Additionally, it attempts to explicate the role of MET in general and Iranian Met in particular. Finally, the paper outlines the challenges that the Iranian MET faces at present and in the future.
