It is the duty of every Muslim to defend the religion, and religious scholars are at the forefront of this endeavor. One of the things that Islam is constantly under threat by is the output of research on religion by of Orientalists. The article on Muḥammad (s) published in the Leiden Encyclopedia of the Qurʾān has a small section devoted to the names and titles of Prophet Muḥammad (s). This study intends to address the shortcomings and ambiguities of the article, authored by Uri Rubin, by examining the section on Muḥammad’s names and titles. In this paper, Rubin’s article is examined in two parts, with the author’s explanations evaluated after examining the statements of Muslim exegetes and historians. The conclusion shows that Uri Rubin has not followed the correct research methodology and therefore, his writing has some shortcomings. Some of the shortcomings of Rubin’s article are: the lack of attention to Shīʿī sources, the use of the word ‘probably’ where most commentators have no doubt, and claims that are based on divergent and anomalous beliefs.

The need to analyze the views of Orientalists about the Prophet (s) is indispensable today, since Western exposure to Islam is through the eyes of their scholars and is reflected in art, politics and other social aspects. The enchantment of the Prophet is one of the subjects that, if accepted, may result in attacks on the very essence his prophethood. As such, the present study seeks to answer the central question concerning the alleged enchantment through a documentary study. Gabriel Mendel Khan is one of the pioneering scholars who has studied Islam for a long time. His most important views on this subject are: confirmation of the Prophet’s enchantment or physical illness as a result of magic, considering certain surahs of the Qurʾān to be talismans, the duality of introducing the Muʿawwidhatān (Surah al-Falaq and Surah al-Nās) as Makkī or Madanī, not paying attention to Shīʿī sources on the subject, ignoring the consequences of accepting that the Prophet (s) was enchanted by magic, and failure to incorporate other possible contexts of revelation of the particular verses and the explanations of the infallibles, all of which has led Mendel Khan to endorse the view of the Prophet’s enchantment. The Prophet (s) was chosen by God and had the ability required to fulfill his responsibility. Despite the Qurʾān’s emphasis on this, some exegeses quote traditions that state the Prophet (s) had been bewitched by a Jew. The opinions of exegetes on this matter differ. Some of them accept that he had been bewitched while others explain the verse through other means aside from bewitchment. However, they all believe that the Prophet was protected from magic in matters pertaining to his responsibility of teaching the people about Divine revelation and law. If Surah al-Falaq is Madanī, it is compatible with the narrations of his being enchanted by a Jew from Madīnah; on the other hand, some consider it Makkī. Surah al-Falaq and al-Nās are together known as Muʿawwidhatān, yet they have not been called talismans. The conclusion we derive is that Mendel Khan considers the enchantment of the Prophet to be the only valid interpretation whereas the occasions of revelation and exegeses of the verses of Surah al-Falaq raise doubts about this interpretation, even if bewitchment is [generally] something possible.

In the Encyclopedia Judaica, Bathja Bayer narrates the story of Prophet Yūsuf (Joseph) on the basis of the Jewish Bible. She explains why and how the brothers attempted to eliminate Yūsuf; the sale of Yūsuf to Pharaoh’s chief steward, Potiphar; how having the ability to interpret dreams, wisdom, and chastity led to his release from prison and elevation to power in Egypt, and Yūsuf’s position and status after his release from prison. Her article also highlights Yūsuf’s positive and negative ethical traits and describes how rabbis use the positive aspects of his life for ethical teachings. Finally, she recounts the story of Yūsuf in the Qurʾān. In this article, the story of Joseph in the Jewish Bible is critiqued based on the Qurʾānic verses, and its differences with the account of the Qurʾān is presented. Given that the Jewish Bible and the Qurʾān are from the same [divine] source, the overall story is similar in both books, but there are some differences in the details. The research method applied in this article is descriptive-analytical.

Islam is a religion that has attracted the attention of many people because of the scope of its influence. Among them are Orientalists, who have carried out research in the field of Islam. One of them is the Jewish scholar Ignaz Goldziher, who has done a lot of research and written copiously in this field. In an article in the Jewish Encyclopedia and in some of his works, he has stated his rejection of the revelatory nature of Islam and has claimed that the Prophet of Islam followed and took his teachings from Judaism, and has provided some examples to prove his assertion. Among the teachings, he has discussed the ‘belief in God’, ‘fasting’, ‘Qiblah’, ‘slaughter of animals’ and ‘washing the dead’. In this article we have examined the validity of Goldziher’s claims about Islam and the borrowing of Islamic teachings from Judaism. By studying and comparing the teachings of Judaism and Islam, it becomes clear that his claim is without merit and that mere similarity in some teachings does not mean that borrowing or adaptation has taken place, as it is quite possible that the singular source of monotheistic religions could also be the reason for their similarity. The fundamental difference between the two religions in some of the commandments is further evidence of the falsity of Goldziher’s claims.

Western scholars of the Qurʾān have posited many origins and sources for the Holy Qurʾān, including pre-Islamic poetry. Among these, the most controversial are the poems of two pre-Islamic poets of the ‘age of ignorance’, Imruʾ al-Qays and Umayyah ibn Abī al-Ṣalt, which are claimed to have influenced the thoughts of the Prophet (s) and the formation of the text of the Holy Qurʾān. However, a study of the chains of transmission and the text of these poems show that such a claim is baseless because of the false attribution of the poems to their supposed authors, their weakness in structure, and their incompatibility with the social and cultural conditions of the pre-Islamic Arabs.

Abrogation is one of the important and controversial issues pertaining to the Qurʾān. In the eyes of erstwhile scholars, abrogation was used mostly in the literal sense of ‘displacement’ such that they would refer to any restriction, limitation or anything that would exclude something from the general rule as an ‘abrogator’ (nāsikh). However, later scholars considered the concept of abrogation to be far more limited in scope and made a clear distinction between abrogation and the general and specific, the absolute and limited, and exceptions. Since the term abrogation has not been consistently used by scholars, there is a great deal of disagreement on the number of abrogating and abrogated verses such that erstwhile scholars have reported large numbers of abrogating and abrogated verses, while in contemporary times, due to careful attention given to the terminological meaning of abrogation, it is applied only if there is a profound discrepancy between the two verses that is impossible to harmonize. For this reason, there are said to be much fewer abrogated verses and some have even denied the existence of a single abrogated verse in the Qurʾān. However, Orientalists have, without exception, defined abrogation in a manner that would lead to the maximum number of abrogating and abrogated verses. Since they consider abrogation to be the result of contradictions in the Qurʾān and the existence of contradictions in the Qurʾān is considered to be a flaw, they are keen to portray the number of abrogating and abrogated verses as many. The entry on ‘Abrogation’ in Leiden’s Encyclopedia of Islam is one of the instances that need to be critically reviewed. In this article, we have surveyed all the cases where the said article in the encyclopedia claims that abrogation took place and concluded that actual abrogation has not taken place in any of the mentioned cases. In the Qurʾān, there is no truly abrogated verse in the technical sense, and all cases mentioned are either instances of limitations on absolute rulings or specifics of general laws, or cases of prima-facie and conditional abrogation.

The present article is an attempt to examine the Orientalist view of predestination and free-will in the Holy Qurʾān and this is an important issue in defending Islam, as Orientalists have sought to destroy the image of Islam in various ways. The issue of predestination and free-will in Islam is one of the areas where Orientalists have erred in their analysis and as a result, they have come up with various views which have tarnished the image of Islam. According to our research, we found Orientalists have two different views on the subject. Some consider Islam to be a religion based on free-will, such as W. Henry and Prof. Kadarnath, while many other Orientalists, such as Toshihiko Izutsu, Wolfson, Rebecca Beinam, Klein Diamist, Will Durant, Washington Irving and others have portrayed Islam, using some verses of the Qurʾān, as a purely deterministic religion. Factors such as lack of knowledge about the Qurʾān, an impetus for undermining the Qurʾān, limiting reference to the works of the Ashʿarites, etc. can be considered as the provenance of this view. However, by reflection upon the verses of the Holy Qurʾān, the reader will find that the Qurʾān introduces human beings as free agents with choice in their actions, and it leaves the human hand untethered, portraying the will of God and the will of man alongside each other, such that there is no contradiction between the will of man and God, and they can both come together as one. (Of course freedom here does not refer to absolute freedom). The views of the second group of Orientalists in this regard are completely invalid. In fact, and it can be said that the attribution of determinism to Islam by the Orientalists is the result of an insufficient and incomplete study of the verses of the Qurʾān, since presenting an opinion on any subject requires examining all aspects of that subject, which they have not done.

The Holy Qurʾān is the book of Muslims and the miracle of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (s), and has long attracted the attention of both Muslim and non-Muslim scholars and researchers. The Leiden Encyclopedia of the Qurʾān is one of the products of research done by Orientalists on this heavenly scripture. Considering the Orientalist approach to Islam and the Qurʾān provides new areas of research and study for Muslims, while also giving them the opportunity to respond to doubts and misgivings. The entry on ‘emigration’ (hijra) in this encyclopedia has been written by Mohammed al-Faruque, and in it he explores the concept of emigration in divine verses. The present paper has translated and analyzed this entry using library-based sources with a descriptive-analytic approach. The positive points and merits of this entry are: the author’s approach is fair, expressive and fluent, correct references to the verses, careful scrutiny of lexical meanings, and referring to other related entries. However, at the same time, it is not without flaws. Some of its weaknesses include: mistakes in referral to sources, lack of adequate explanation, not relating the differing opinions, lack of precision in expression, citation of anomalous opinions and lack of reference to multiple sources. The result of this is that part of its contents are not sufficiently convincing.

The Merciful Lord blessed humanity and acquainted them with religion, the essence of which is the lifeblood of man. The Almighty equipped Prophets with miracles in order to prove the truth of their mission. The Holy Qurʾān is the proof of the legitimacy of the religion of the Seal of Prophets, a precious gem that has challenged all mankind throughout the ages to produce its like. The author has attempted, in this paper, to briefly introduce the Qurʾān and Orientalists software to the scholarly community, especially those specializing in the discipline of Qurʾān and the Orientalism. He then gives the experts who were responsible for creating the software a report on the positive aspects and drawbacks of this software, so that they can improve future versions, include the necessary features and do away with its defects, God-willing. The most significant shortcomings of this software, contrary to what the institute that created it claims i.e. that it is the most comprehensive software on the subject of Orientalism and the Qurʾān, are firstly its incompleteness and secondly its lack of required deference for the Qurʾān.
