Physical adsorption is one of the powerful methods to analyze structure of porous materials especially for catalytic precursors. With emerging of physical adsorption devices, adsorbed gas amounts versus varied relative pressures data lead to obtain beneficial results like surface area, pore volume and pore size distribution based on various theories. Additionally by consideration of adsorption-desorption isothermal curve, we can estimate shape of the porous. In this work, it has been tried to present briefly adsorption physical concepts, conventional methods of surface area measurement, pore volume and pore size distribution

Gas-chromatography (GC) is a powerful separation technique for resolving and quantifying a wide range of compounds, such as fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) derivatives. Separation of common FAME is typically achieved on highly polar or polyethylene glycol stationary phases that can separate fatty acids according to chain length, number and geometry of ethylenic double bonds. GC is one of the most commonly available methods for fatty acid analysis with constant improvements for different applications. One such improvement is faster GC analysis, which has long been the focus of investigators researching the application and benefits of this technique. A greater speed of analysis offers many key benefits, such as increased sample throughput, reduced analytical expenses, and increased laboratory productivity. Fast GC analysis can be accomplished by using a short column with reduced column film thickness, high carrier gas velocity, and fast program temperatures. A summary of options for fast GC analysis with emphasis on FAME analysis is discussed in the present review.

Batteries and fuel cells produce electricity through chemical reactions. The rates of these reactions determine that the power of the battery, its charge rate and degradation. Near the surface and at the interfaces between materials, huge changes in properties can occur that can affect the reaction rates, which are complex and difficult-to-understand. Research in the last years has revealed that local variations in material properties can affect the performance of batteries and other electrochemical systems. The concentration of ionic and electronic species often depend on the important electrochemical properties of materials, such as surface reactions, interfacial charge transfer, and bulk and surface diffusion. Measuring these properties locally on the nanoscale build a good understanding of how electrochemical systems really work, and thus new materials with much higher performance can be created and increased the battery life. Scanning thermo-ionic microscopy is developed to probe local electrochemical activities at the nanoscale. The mechanism of this microscopy is based on imaging the Vegard strain induced by thermally driven stress and temperature oscillation. The Vegard strain linearly correlates with material lattice constant and can be used as a measure of ionic species concentration. Theoretical analysis and experimental validation are indicated that second and fourth harmonic components of the AFM deflection signal contain valuable information about species concentration. Second harmonic response of thermally induced cantilever vibration, is present in all solids predominantly correlates with the local thermal expansion information, while the fourth harmonic one is characteristic of local transport of mobile species that is presented only in ionic systems.

For many years now, Conventional Transmission Electron Microscope (CTEM) has been used as an efficient tool to fulfill Nano scale analysis and imaging requirements of scientists and researchers of different areas. Despite the fact that CTEM is a very efficient tool, in some areas researchers must add specially designed equipment to this microscope in order to create desired conditions for observing and imaging their specific specimens. In this article, we introduce one of the most practical kind of CTEM that has been invented for over a decade namely, Energy-Filtering Transmission Electron Microscope (EFTEM). EFTEM has been designed by using physical principles of electron energy-loss spectrometry (EELS) and commercial in-column or post-column energy-filters introduced by companies like: ZEISS and GATAN. It can generate precise images from ultrastructure of different specimens belonging to different areas of research by using inelastically scattered electrons. The operation of these kind of energy-filters is straightforward and because of that acquiring element specific images within only a few minutes has become possible. For obtaining best results, a fundamental knowledge of the underlying physics of EELS and a systematic development of the technical details is necessary. Also it is important that users be able to know with certainty that EFTEM is the optimal equipment for their experiments. For aforementioned reason, detailed structures of available energy filters and applications of EFTEM in various fields are reviewed in the next article titled “Introduction to Energy-Filtering Transmission Electron Microscope structure and applications” that will be publish in the next issue of this journal.
