The relation and boundary between jurisprudence and ethics have been a matter of concern to thinkers for some time. Some modernists hold that jurisprudence has brought ethics into bay. As a part of their duty in religious intellectualism, they have been trying to make jurisprudence subject to secular ethics. It seems that their understanding of jurisprudence and ethics depends on some controversial presuppositions, were to be corrected, the erroneous substitution of ethics for jurisprudence would be known. A historical review would prove that the distinction between the two disciplines and their endurance side by side owe to their different subject matters. As a part of its realistic subject matter, ethics deals with the correction of traits and habits, but jurisprudence deals with mentally-posited concepts that manage our behaviors. In what follows, the author has demonstrated that the consideration of ethical propositions as mentally-posited perceptions from one side and the specious understanding of the concepts of jurisprudence from another side gave rise to the project of substitution of ethics for jurisprudence. The consideration of some perplexing angles of legal concepts proves that we fail to logically challenge the propositions of obligation of jurisprudence through simple concepts of modern none-virtue ethics.

Practical wisdom is a theorematic discipline of knowledge not only different from practical disciplines of knowledge but also from theoretical wisdom. From one side, it is different from the former which might be mentioned as the disciplines of professions and skills, since practical wisdom is a syllogistic discipline about man’s voluntary acts in the course of man’s happiness, i.e. it infers the general rules of dispositional habits through syllogism and thinking. And from another side, it is different from the latter because it deals with what there is thus irrelevant to man’s voluntary acts; propositions of what there is are not characterized by good or evil nor they have value judgments. That wisdom is divided into theoretical and practical categories stems from the fact that man’s nature has two dimensions. That is to say, viewing man’s incorporeal soul and connection to the metaphysical world man enjoys theoretical wisdom, and viewing the attachment of the soul to the body and the management of the latter by the former man enjoys practical wisdom. In order to reach its goal i.e. man’s happiness, practical wisdom needs theoretical wisdom, because the discourse on what man’s happiness is falls in two sections of theoretical wisdom: the study of soul and that of final cause. Thus we might consider practical wisdom as complementary to the theoretical one and in line with it. Practical wisdom has two other valuable functions: first it is the origin of theorematic humanities and second it helps set up a rational system for religious doctrines.

This article goes to explain Leibnitz’ principle of sufficient reason and to compare it to the rule of prior necessity in the Islamic philosophy. Along with the principle of contradiction, the principle of sufficient reason constitutes Leibnitz[1] principles of metaphysics. His phrases on the issue are inconsistent, which gave rise to different interpretations on Leibnitz view. From one side, Leibnitz considers all true propositions as analytic thus necessary, and from another side he proposes concepts such as conditioned and ethical necessities and divides true propositions into truths of reason and those of fact. Accordingly, Leibnitz withdraws from his position of necessitarianism. In the Islamic philosophy, there is the so-called rule of “prior necessity” much similar to Leibnitz’s principle of sufficient reason, though more general than the above rule. We aim to study the Islamic philosophy and modern Western philosophy comparatively. Our method is to refer to library references and making use of Internet and software such as “E. Islamic theosophy library”. [1]. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz.

To ask about the arche or first element of the world has been one of the questions of Greek philosophy received different answers. It was called hyle by Aristotle. During Graeco-Arabic translation movement, some translators rendered arche into madatu al-mawad (the matter of matters, prime matter) and hyle into matter; coining such wrong terms gave rise to many misunderstandings and philosophical complications. From the very beginning, the division of beings into corporeal and incorporeal was proposed by Muslim Philosophers. Later however, the term Jismani (bodily) was substituted for maddi (material); while the Aristotelian so-called hyle had been integrated in the meaning of material then most philosophers unknowingly made use of material instead of Jismani (bodily) even those who did not embrace hyle (the very matter) at all. In their essay and through semantic analysis of the related philosophical terms, the authors have tried to shed light on the philosophical consequences of coining such terms (such as that potentiality is confined to bodily things and that there is no time or motion in incorporeal beings); they managed to avoid verbal controversy which is far from philosophical discussion. Finally, they have suggested their adequate definitions of corporeal and incorporeal beings.

There are many differences between the creative cause (the real and true cause that bring things into being) and natural causes (preparing causes). In his essay, the author has referred to the most significant differences in Mulla Sadra’s viewpoint. The outcome -achieved through library references and the analysis of the data- is to attain those features in the true creative cause none of them can be found in preparing causes. Those features are: bringing into being (creation), that making is not exclusive to composite making, that an influence and influencing are one identical thing, that an agent and its being agent are one identical thing, that such agent is free from motion instrument and receptive element, that the influence is from its side, that it is stronger than the effect, that it is impossible to separate the act from the agent and vice versa.

One of the most significant issues in epistemology is to examine the graded or individual unity from many different angles. To begin with, it is to be mentioned that not only the theory of graded or individual unity has been proposed by Sardaian theosophy, but also by Avicenna and al-Suhrawardi’s schools of philosophy. The main pivot of the essay is to critically assess the philosophical issues under the graded or individual unity.   What has been discussed in this article are: the differences between the necessary being as the being “negatively conditioned” under graded unity and as the being "Almighty" none-conditioned as the source of division under individual unity, the system of causes and effects under graded unity and the system of states or being in a state under individual unity, putting forward the theory of necessity and contingency under graded unity and its rejection under individual unity, res and quasi res predication under graded unity and he-is-he predication under individual predication, and the like

Allamah Tabatabaii’s theory of mentally-posited perceptions is an innovation in different fields achieving cognitive outcomes. Having adopted a descriptive-synthetic approach in their article, the authors tried to sum up Allamah’s ideas in his various works and then to present a new classification of his theory in terms of the source of those perceptions unmentioned in his works.  The authors have summed up Allamah’s theory that the source of mentally-posited perceptions might be proposed at two levels: individual and social. At the social level, the source of mentally-posited perceptions can be the Wise or the Law-giver each of whom have their exclusive characteristics. The study of those characteristics helps us not confuse one for another. Some characteristics are common between the Wise and the Law-giver; for example, both observe expediency and the good or bad, have real influence and guides toward happiness. However, unlike the mentally-posited perceptions by the Wise, those posited by the Law-giver do not stem from our needs or feelings. They have their own different instances for the perfection of man. Furthermore, mentally-posited perceptions have no room in Divine Presence.

Learning rational sciences particularly philosophy plays a significant role in man’s life. In their oral and written works, many philosophers have tried to deal with different dimensions of the issue explaining the necessity to learn philosophy. As a prominent Muslim philosopher, Mulla Sadra has his own particular explanation. This article aims to critically and analytically shed light on the above explanation. Some of Mulla Sadra’s premises seem to be incorrect; the necessity to learn philosophy is undeniable, though. Philosophy is the only means to answer man’s fundamental questions and to clear man’s intellectual doubts. A better understanding of the Qur’an and traditions and the truths of the world owes to philosophy.
