This paper is a commentary on the advices of Imam Mohammad Bagher (PBUH) to Jabir b. Yazid al-Ju’fi, one of his noble companions regarding the characteristics of the real Shiites. On this account, using the guidance of reason in controlling the desires of the soul is one of the another characteristic of the Shiites. According to certain religious principles, man has an internal enemy. There are two categories of inclinations and tendencies in human beings, one is the desire to ascend and perfection and the other is the desire to descend and fall. The second type of tendency is common to humans and animals, which is collectively called “soul desires”. On the contrary, the desires that seek excellence and closeness to God and perfection are called intellect. These two tendencies are always fighting. We must be careful on the battlefield not to be deceived and defeated. To control desires, it is necessary to follow reason. We need to think about the rules of reason, learn them, and be prepared to confront the desires of the soul. When the intellect cannot judge alone, it is necessary to refer to the rules of Shari’a. Imam Baqir (PBUH) says, to apply knowledge, purify practice. Adherence to religion and reason and the rules of Shari’a is the way to get rid of the desires of the soul.

The “Philosophies of”, are of different types, one of which is the “philosophy of value”. Using a descriptive-analytical method this paper seeks to provide an accurate and comprehensive definition of value. Hence, the types of definition are stated first. Analyzing the meaning of value, it was concluded that value is homonym between desirability and quantity. Since the intended meaning in the philosophy of value is desirability, this paper explains the meaning of desirability, its accessories and results. It is then discussed whether the meaning of value is obvious or theoretical, whether it is real or related, whether it is first intelligible or secondary intelligible, and whether it is univocal or equivocal. Finally, what can be qualified for value is explained.

The conceptual unity of existence is a universal belief accepted by all Islamic philosophers. They believe that existence, despite its apparent multiplicity in the realm of realization, has a single meaning in mind, which is common to all instances. Moreover, most of them have considered the conceptual unity of existence as indicating the unity of its truth and some even believe it to be obvious. Of course, several aspects have been mentioned on the implication of the conceptual unity of existence on the unity of its truth that this paper will deal with these aspects in an analytical and descriptive approach.

Imagination in the epistemology of Sadr al-Muta’allehin has sometimes tended to Ibn Arabi and its great and superior role, and sometimes it has a tendency towards the peripatetic school and its sub-rational status. Although the special place in the philosophical system of Sadr al-Muta’allehin belongs to the intellect, but where the intellect has failed to understand, it has turned to imagination and through the movement of substance he considers the abstract and soul-based human imagination as the solution to many problems including understanding the affirmative and immanent divine attributes, the revelatory teachings of the prophet and solving the problem of bodily resurrection. Using a descriptive-analytical method this paper seeks to study the challenges of this theologian in facing the mystical and philosophical approaches with imagination. Sadr al-Muta’allehin considers imagination to be a hierarchical essence, and according to the equivocal levels of imagination, he considers the imagination attributed to the senses as the source of image and allegory and the imagination attributed to the realm of the kingdom as the entrance of inspiration and revelation. His commitment to philosophical reason has led him to use the transcendental dimension of imagination only where reason is incapable of comprehending it.

The pre-eternity and temporal contingency of the soul has been one of the concerns of Muslim philosophers. Sheikh Ishraq, based on his philosophical principles and special arguments, believes in the temporal contingency of the soul. He believes that the soul, simultaneously with the creation of the material body, occurs as an abstract entity. The commentators of Suhrawardi’s works have considered his thought incompatible with religious texts, just as they have considered his arguments for the creation of the soul incomplete. On the other hand, Sheikh Ishraq in his symbolic treatises and interpretations refers to the presence of the soul in the previous worlds, therefore, it seems that the soul has come to this material world from the higher worlds and has traveled the worlds before this world. Using an analytical method and neo-Ishraqi approach, this paper seeks to analyzes the inconsistency in Suhrawardi’s views. The findings show that, the human souls existed before the world in the area of their cause and the lord of species in a general and collective way and then they are created in this material world in a partial and personal way.

Using a comparative method, this paper studies the status of reason in empirical cognition from the perspective of Immanuel Kant and martyr Motahhari to explain their solutions to solve the problem of empirical knowledge. Kant mentions meanings for reason and considers reason in the sense of understanding to have epistemic validity. He considers the judgment of reason to be invalid in the field of metaphysics, and valid in the field of physics due to its temporality and locative nature. To solve the problem of empirical cognition, Kant proposed earlier authorial rulings and for its totality and objectivity, he uses categories of pure understanding. He also considers the correct knowledge of the concept of reason and its function to be involved in the diagnosis of correct empirical knowledge. But martyr Motahhari considers the role of reason in empirical knowledge through the precedence of obvious rational rules for empirical knowledge, and solves the problem of empirical cognition by using secondary intelligibles in empirical knowledge. He depicts the role of reason in empirical knowledge in two areas of perceptions and affirmations. In the case of perceptions, empirical and sensory perceptions preceded and laid the groundwork for rational imaginations and in the realm of affirmations, originality is with reason, and rational affirmations take precedence over empirical affirmations and without reason, no verdict or confirmation will be achieved, not even empirical confirmation.

Philosophers of the humanities believe that the philosophical foundations of a theorist of the humanities have had a fundamental influence on the formation of his theories and, in fact, it provides the basis for the production of the humanities. Using a descriptive-analytical method, this paper analyzes the role of Sartre’s anthropological views on various aspects of the humanities including subject, methodology, goals, issues and values. The findings show that, Sartre’s beliefs, including “the denial of the necessity of existence, the denial of any previous plan and nature for man, assuming man as a free being, making him responsible for making his nature through choices and independent plans, the denial of any a former source for values other than freedom and failure to provide a clear and achievable ideal and goal for human beings” logically led him to consider the subject of the humanities and their methods, as “human actions and their worldly effects” and “qualitative methods” and naturally be deprived of the rich source of revelation and religious teachings related to the humanities and finally, to be deprived of purposeful and universal humanities with objective and universal values.

Using a descriptive-analytical method, this paper analyzes the criterion of numerical identity (sameness) of the body from the viewpoint of some Islamic thinkers in two aspects, the main components and the delicate body. Some Islamic thinkers believe that human truth and the criterion of human identity are its main and vital components, which will be constant over time and will not disappear even at death. Others believe that man has two material and delicate bodies, but the truth of man is the delicate body. They consider the soul to be the delicate body that is like water in mud and not an abstract thing.  This delicate body does not accept the changes and transformations of the material body, so it is constant and continuous over time. They have cited a number of narrative, rational, and empirical reasons to prove their claim. This criterion has several problems due to its materialistic view towards the human beings and also due to its inability to explain how the body continues at two different times and how to comprehend this continuity.

Philosophical concepts, which are a variety of general concepts, are considered as one of the most important philosophical issues in a way that, many scholars consider it the key to knowing and discovering reality and the adaptation of scientific forms to objective objects. The term philosophical concepts is a common term in Islamic philosophy especially Sadra’s philosophical school, but neglecting this type of concepts in the West, especially in epistemological issues, has caused many intellectual deviations. In contemporary times, some of the Sadr al-Muta’allehin’s views have been criticized, so despite the great importance of philosophical concepts, it is worthwhile for scholars to pay more attention to them. Using a descriptive-analytical method and strengthening the Islamic foundations of philosophy and epistemology this paper seeks to study the most important requirements of research in philosophical concepts by explaining their realism.
