Since students are required to prepare their papers in well-organized written works, it is important for academic learners to have a good command of writing skill. One of the methods gaining a reputation in enhancing students’ performance in language teaching is cooperative learning. This study intends to examine the effect of one of the CL techniques on enhancing upper-intermediate EFL learners’ descriptive writing ability. Fifty participants of this study were assigned into two groups. First, Nelson general proficiency test was administered to make sure both are homogeneous in terms of general proficiency. Then, a writing pre-test was given to both groups to examine if they possess the same writing proficiency. Analysis of both Nelson and writing pre-test showed that both groups were at the same level at first. The experimental group received treatment using Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) as a cooperative learning technique while the routine teaching method was implemented to the control group. After carrying out the treatments for 16 sessions, the writing post-test was given to both groups. The results rejected the first null hypothesis and showed STAD was efficient in increasing students' writing ability. The second null hypothesis was supported since the p value for this test was 0.74 and higher than 0.05 meaning males and females were similar in their performance. This study has implications on teaching and learning descriptive writing. This study also indicates that STAD is an effective alternative method and can be utilized by teachers to enhance the mastery of writing skill.

Considering the significance of writing academically in an international context by veterinary students and a low emphasis on writing honesty in this academic community, the current study aimed to investigate the perceptions of ESP students and their veterinarian professors at the Islamic Azad University of Babol toward plagiarism. To this end, this study attempted to find first, how students have defined plagiarism and what their reasons for doing plagiarism were. It also aimed to explore the causes of the students’ unethical behaviors from their professors’ perspectives. Thus, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 40 ESP students along with 10 ESP professors. The participants’ responses were analyzed by using thematic analysis. Findings related to the first research question indicated that the students could just vaguely define plagiarism. According to the findings of the second research question, the students reported a list of reasons that included: Unawareness of writing rules, lack of enough experience, lack of motivation, and their tutor ignorance in detecting plagiarism. Regarding the results of the third research question, the professors presented various important reasons for plagiaristic behaviors of the students such as the students’ indolence, underestimating the value of honest behaviors by policymakers, and lack of any writing course in the veterinarian educational program.

In today’s world, online education and digital learning are increasingly evolving and are on the agenda of many organizations. The study aimed to uncover the relationship between holistic/analytic cognitive style in online courses and big five personality traits among Iranian male and female English for Academic Purposes students. In this correlational research, the participants were selected via convenience sampling, and there were 100 students (50 male and 50 female) whose ages ranged between 20 and 26. They were senior students of executive management. For obtaining the essential data about students’ personality type and learning style, the researcher used the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI: Form M) and the Learning Style Inventory-version 3 (LSI3). These instruments are designed to identify the individual characteristics of students. The MBTI and the LSI3 were distributed at the end of the semester, and the data were analyzed by SPSS using the related statistical tests. Findings showed a statistically significant relationship among the variables under the study, specifically the extroversion factor, which was an influential personality type in online learning. Thus, it is necessary to pay full attention to each student’s characteristics, style, and personality traits to find the best teaching method.

A Letter of Recommendation (LR) plays a significant role during the admission process in higher education. Almost all universities require LRs for the admission of prospective students into graduate programmes. Using Genre Theory (Bhatia, 1993; Swales, 1990), this study examined the schematic structure of 35 purposively sampled LRs written by lecturers from the Department of English of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), a leading public university in Ghana. We employed qualitative content analysis complemented by some descriptive statistics. One key finding is that, in general, UCC lecturers used a 6-move structure, namely: “purpose of writing,” “context of knowing the candidate,” “writer’s credentials,” “candidate’s credentials,” “candidate’s personal values,” and “closure”. It was found further that Move 6 (closure) had the highest percentage of frequency of occurrence (i.e., 100%), while Move 4, Candidate’s credentials, occupied the greatest space. A further finding was that the sequence of moves did not depict any one standard sequence; instead, there were different sequential patterns in the dataset. The study concludes that writing the LR involves deploying disciplinary and genre-specific conventions as well as personal stylistic preferences of the writers. These findings have implications for the existing scholarship on LRs, professional development, and further research.

Finding effective ways to improve L2 idioms recall has been a long-standing concern of many practitioners. This study compared the effects of meaning-focused and form-focused tasks with varying involvement load indices on EFL learners' recall of L2 idioms. One-hundred eighty intermediate level EFL learners participated in this study and were randomly assigned to one of the six experimental groups. In three form-focused groups, the participants received multiple-choice, sentence-completion and sentence-making tasks with involvement indices of 2, 3, and 4, respectively. In three meaning-focused groups, they were asked to perform summary writing, writing with glossary, and writing without glossary with involvement degrees of 2, 3, and 4, respectively. A 30-item test in fill-in-the-blank format was administered to all groups to assess their recall of idioms after the treatment. To analyze the data, a two-way ANOVA and a series of independent-samples t-tests were used. The results showed that the tasks with higher degrees of involvement were more efficient on the recall of idioms. The results also revealed that although form-focused tasks were significantly more effective than meaning-focused tasks at lower loads of involvement, at higher involvement load, the difference between form-focused and meaning-focused tasks was not significant. The findings of the present study can have theoretical as well as pedagogical implications for learners, teachers, textbook designers, and curriculum developers.

This study sought to investigate the effect of flipped classroom instruction on EFL learners’ motivation and willingness to communicate (WTC). To fulfill the above purpose, 68 intermediate learners were selected among 90 through their performance on a piloted sample English proficiency test. The learners were thence assigned into two control and experimental groups each with the same number of students (i.e., 34). The WTC test both inside and outside the classroom and the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) were given to the two groups as pretest. Both groups were taught by the same teacher for 12 sessions of 90 minutes using the same material. In the experimental group, the students underwent the treatment which was flipped classroom, whereas the learners in the control group received the usual instruction based on the syllabus of the language school. The same WTC and AMTB questionnaires were administered again as the posttest at the end of the instruction to the two groups. Two ANCOVAs were run concluding that the flipped classroom instruction had a significantly positive impact on EFL learners’ motivation and WTC. This study has implications for the ELT community including teachers, learners, syllabus designers, and educational managers (discussed in detail in the conclusion section) thus encouraging them to apply flipped classroom instruction for better results.

This paper reports the results of a corpus-driven study that investigated the structural frequency and diversity of lexical bundles in chemistry research articles. The investigation was based on a corpus of 1,185 chemistry research articles, totaling four million words. WordSmith was used to generate four-word lexical bundles and their concordance lines. Altogether, 223 lexical bundles were found. More than 55% of these bundles were phrasal; 35% of them were clausal. ‘Prepositional phrases + of’ bundles were the most frequently used bundles. Bundles with a passive verb, followed by a prepositional phrase fragment were the second most frequent bundles in the entire corpus. Bundles with the structure ‘noun phrase + of’ were the third and second most frequent bundles in the corpus and among phrasal bundles, respectively. In terms of diversity, bundles with ‘noun phrase + of’ and ‘passive + prepositional phrase fragment’ were the most varied and bundles with ‘pronoun/noun phrase + be’ structure were the least varied bundles in the entire corpus. Prepositional phrase bundles outnumbered noun phrase bundles in terms of frequency, whereas noun phrase bundles outnumbered prepositional phrase bundles in diversity. Altogether, the results show that frequency and diversity correlate with the type of phrasal lexical bundle. Moreover, the study suggests that different discourses are associated with different sets of lexical bundles with different frequency and diversity, due to the different communicative functions they follow. The paper ends with implications for future EAP research, materials development, and pedagogy.
