Spillways are designed in different methods according to the operating conditions, type of structure, site conditions of the dam, and hydraulic characteristics. One of them is the Glory spillway, which consists of a circular opening, a vertical circular opening, and a horizontal pressurized tunnel. The present study investigates the effect of stairs and their numbers as well as the effect of the presence of a vortex breaker on the hydraulic performance of the Glory spillway. This is due to the simplification of the geometric shape during construction and increasing the efficiency of the flow. Based on the results, it was observed with the coefficients of low immersion ratio,4 floors have the highest performance in discharge transfer. Also, increasing the immersion ratio coefficient of stairs will reduce the hydraulic performance of the spillway. On the other hand, in all cases (except in the case of spillway with 12 floors), the presence of a vortex breaker with a triple arrangement can affect the separation of vortex breakers, which ameliorates the flow transfer efficiency from the spillway and separation of flow lines.

in the present study, the slope stability coefficient of Namrood dam as a case study was calculated for different load conditions, including permanent leakage and completion of construction by using deteministic and probabilistic methods. Geo-studio software package and Monte Carlo simulation techniques were used for analysis. The effect of earthquake load on the stability of the dam structure was also investigated. The results showed that in the present conditions of the dam, the failure probability of the critical sections of Namrood dam was negligible, so that the maximum probability of failure was calculated as 0.00007. Then, sensitivity analysis were carried out on the value and type of distribution of effective input parameters. Results showed that with the increase in the earthquake load by 15%, the probability of dam failure increased by about 100%. The results also showed that the type of effective parameters distributions including cohesion of soil (c), soil friction angle (φ) and unit weight (γ) have little effect on the probability of dam failure.

In this study, the ability of WCA-ANN hybrid algorithm to model the pore water pressure coefficient in the body of Kabudwal dam at the time of construction was investigated and the effective features were identified. Therefore, five features including fill level, time, reservoir level, dewatering rate and fill speed during the 4-year statistical period were selected as the input of the model. By running the hybrid algorithm and feature selection method, the two features of fill level and time at points RU19.1  and   RU19.2 have the greatest impact on modeling the pore water pressure coefficient. In addition to the above two features, in the points of the middle axis , the features of fill speed and reservoir level with error value (MSE) equal to 0.00006 and in points close to the dam reservoir, dewatering level and dewatering rate with error value equal to 0.00004 are effective in modeling the pore water pressure coefficient. The results showed that at points close to the dam axis, the fill level and at points farther from the middle axis construction time (with high sensitivity coefficient) was recognized as the most important features in modeling the pore water pressure coefficient with artificial intelligence models.

Scour in vicinity of hydraulic structures is considered as one of the most important parameters to design the structures. In this study, scour pattern at downstream of submerged weirs was predicted using the novel method “Extreme Learning Machine”. In current study, in order to survey the accuracy of the numerical model, the Monte Carlo Simulations(MCs) was employed. In addition, the k-fold cross validation was utilized so as to validate the results of numerical models. Then, regarding with input parameters, five ELM models were developed. Firstly, the number of optimized hidden neurons for soft computing model was calculated. Next, the best activation function for numerical model was chosen. Analysis of activation function showed that the sigmoid activation function predicted the scour around submerged weirs with more accuracy. Additionally, results of sensitivity analysis proved that the superior model estimated the scour in terms of U0/Uc, z/ht,d50/ht. This model simulated the scour around submerged weirs with reasonable accuracy, for instance, determination coefficient and scatter index were computed 0.880 and 0.127, respectively. Moreover, the velocity parameter U0/Uc was identified as the most effective input variable. Finally, a matrix was provided to estimate the scour depth for engineers without previous knowledge of Extreme Learning Machine.

In the present study, in order to make geopolymer concrete for use in concrete dams, 6 mixing designs including 288 concrete samples of control concrete containing Portland cement and slag geopolymer concrete containing 0 to 8% nanosilica and 1 to 2% polyolefin fibers were prepared. 7, 28 and 90 days processing were subjected to mechanical and durability tests. In order to study the microstructure in this study, XRF and SEM tests were used. The results show that the compressive strength, tensile strength, water impermeability, capillary water absorption for geopolymer concrete containing 8% nanosilica and 2% polyolefin fibers (as an optimal design) compared to control concrete, by 3%, respectively, 9 %, 56% and 65 times at 90 days of processing. In this regard, the maximum values of compressive strength and tensile strength obtained were 82.96 and 5.51 MPa, respectively, and the minimum amount of water penetration in concrete was 13 mm and the minimum rate amount of water capillary absorption was 0.049 Cm/s1/2 for geopolymer concrete. SEM images showed that the geopolymerization process was enhanced by producing more hydrated gels and improving the microstructure of geopolymer concrete by increasing the presence of silica nanoparticles.

Concrete gravity dams are one of the conventional structures for storing and controlling water resources. In recent years, due to large number of dam constructions, designers are encounter with narrow valleys which are not adequate for arch dam constructions. In recent decades, many researches have been done on the numerical modeling of concrete gravity dams, however most of these studies consider the dam and its foundation as an ideal two-dimensional model. In narrow valleys, it seems that two-dimensional modeling of these structures may lead to inaccurate results. In this thesis, the 3D behavior of the concrete gravity dams including dam-reservoir-foundation interactions under static and dynamic loads has been studied. The obtaining results for models with three different 20,100 and 350 meters width shows significant differences between two and three dimensional models. Observations from results indicated that the crest relative displacements and stress distributions as well as crack patterns are more similar for wide valleys and 2D model in compare with narrow valleys. In the other words, 2D models don’t have necessary adequacy for modelling gravity dams in narrow valleys and three dimensional studies should be conducted in such cases.

Dam break in recent decades has caused extensive damage to infrastructure and economic activities.Recently, the finite volume method based on shallow water equations with the ability to model shock waves has been welcomed by many researchers due to the high resolution of this method in the modeling of various supercritical, subcritical, steady, unsteady, continuous and discontinuous flows.. The five widely used methods are HLL, HLLC, Osher, FVS and REF (Roe with Entropy Fixed). Important features of mentioned numerical methods include five factors of accuracy, simulation time, ease of implementation, applicability for different issues and stability. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and  Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) provide convenient approaches for solving complex Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) problems in engineering. Each methods are evaluated in terms of the decision criteria based on the weight of each criterion and pairwise comparisons are used to determine the relative importance of each method in terms of each criterion. Pairwise comparisons are quantified by using a scale. The results show that the Osher method appear to be superior to the other types of approximate Riemann solvers. Then the HLLC and the FVS methods, with slight difference in weight, are ranked next.
