In some cases, a vertical shaft with a high cross-sectional area and a suitable depth as a portal for the assembly of a TBM drilling rig, the transfer of staff and equipment is required. If the shaft is used for this purpose, the cross -section of the shaft will be rectangular; otherwise, the cross-section of the circular shaft can also be used. In Iran, more than rectangular cross-section shafts have been used as TBM portals. The main objective of this research is to investigate the stability of rectangular shaft for TBM machine by using the finite difference method FLAC3D software. The results of numerical models show that the value of displacement in the horizontal direction increases with the distance from the corner of the rectangular shaft in depth. Also, the stress concentration in the rectangular shaft corners is very high in comparison to the side walls and will eventually become unstable. In addition, in a rectangular shaft, the amount of bending moment is applied to the support system and causes it to be unstable, which requires the elements of the instrument to reduce the moment. According to numerical modeling results, the rectangular shaft is close to the instability threshold.

SummaryThe present paper studies on the propagation characteristics of fault rupture and the behavior of tunnel exposed to the fault displacements to increase the performance of earthquake-resistant structures. In this study, the effect of the presence or absence of the tunnel in the normal fault rupture propagation has been modeled by discrete element software. Also, in order to validate the numerical studies performed in this research, the results were compared with a series of centrifuge experiments results conducted at NCU centrifuge laboratory. The results indicate that the presence of the tunnel has changed the direction of the fault rupture, and also the shear zone in surface and subsurface of the soil layer has been widely spread. IntroductionThe main objective of the study is to provide understanding into shear zone and ground deformation taking place in sand with the presence of a tunnel in the faulting zone. The paper begins with an explanation on the construction of the soil model with DEM. The research continues with validation and comparison of DEM simulations with centrifuge results to gain a better understanding of this numerical modeling for replacing laboratory tests.Methodology and ApproachesThe discrete element method is a suitable numerical model for defining the mechanical behavior of spheres and integrated disks in which the particle-to-particle contact interaction is controlled and the particle motion is modeled particle by particle. In PFC modeling the composite material consists of a group of rigid grains that interact at their point of contact. The process of the modeling and the problem solving in PFC2D involved several steps that were accomplished by using appropriate Fish functions. Results and ConclusionsThe results indicate that the presence of the tunnel has changed the direction of the fault rupture, and also the shear zone in surface and subsurface of the soil layer have been widely spread with the presence of the tunnel. Comparison between numerical studies and centrifugal experiments shows that the interaction between faulting and tunnel depends on tunnel overhead pressure, tunnel stiffness, tunnel position relative to the fault center and soil mechanical parameters. It also shows the deviation of the faulting path, the surface displacements and the increase of the risk of normal faulting on the surface structures.

The current study compares the quality and speed of installing the ring segments in TBM tunnels with two different connection types. The TBM tunnel of the “A” line in the Qom metro Project was selected. Two different types of segment rings with bolts and dowels were used with some modifications in casting bodies. Common deficiencies in TBM tunnels are the existence of the gap and uneven surface between two adjacent segments with bolted connections that lead to water penetration to the tunnel and inappropriate lining surfaces. To resolve these deficiencies, one segment casting was modified from bolted form to dowel form and then installed on the selected tunnel. Investigations on installed segments showed a significant decrease in gaps and uneven surfaces as well as the fracture segments. The fractures in segment edges and bodies decreased 75% and 50%, respectively. Also, the time of installation of the ring with dowels was 11% decreased. It finally showed the higher quality of installation that decreased the penetration, amount of repairing materials, the time of installation, and the cost. Finite element analysis was done to ensure desirable load carrying capacity and appropriate stress propagation between the devices and concrete segments. The results showed that the dowel connections had better behavior. Finally, the modification of steel bolted connection to plastic dowels is recommended in TBM tunnel projects.

Rockburst in deep underground excavations is a phenomenon that is observed in the form of sudden rock failure and release of strain energy stored in underground mines and rock tunnels, usually in stressful places and at a depth greater than the earth's surface. Due to this explosive failure, rock in pieces Small and large are scattered around and cause damage to humans or equipment. In the present study, the potential of rockburst using data mining techniques and comparing their results with three experimental methods, tangential stress criterion (SC), brittleness criterion (BC) and elastic energy index (EEI) are investigated. For this purpose, data mining models such as support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), Bayesian networks (BNs), artificial neural network (ANN) and CHAID tree model have been used in WEKA software. The results show the superiority of data mining algorithms over experimental methods. Among data mining algorithms, the support vector machine model had the highest accuracy with 80.8% accuracy. However, measuring the accuracy of the models by RMSE method considers the artificial neural network model with the value of RMSE = 0.337 as the best model. In addition, among the experimental methods, the elastic energy index method with an accuracy of 60.7 is the best method.

Stability analysis of tunnels and determination of behavioral characteristics of rock mass using numerical methods such as finite element, boundary element and discrete element are associated with limitations in terms of validation of input and output data. One of the practical methods to solve these problems is the use of monitoring and instrumentation system in tunnels, which is done with the aim of controlling displacements and assessing the stability of underground structures and rock mass characteristics. In mountainous tunnels, the main purpose is to measure the deformation during tunnel construction and to ensure that ground pressures are controlled on the temporary support system. One of the methods to determine the parameters in situ is to use the instrument and perform back analysis on the resulting data. In this research, the direct method of back analysis based on univariate search algorithm has been used to determine the geomechanical parameters of rock mass in Pooneh tunnel. Numerical analysis were performed using Phase2 software. Based on this research, four zones along the tunnel route were selected along with four convergence-measuring stations then by changing the parameters E, K, C and ϕ and performing back analysis the best relationship between tool displacement and modeling results was obtained and a suitable support system is provided accordingly. A ground reaction curve (GRC) is plotted for each zone to determine the appropriate time to install the support system.
