Due to the high prevalence of type 2 diabetes and hypothyroidism and the fact that the complication of burning mouth syndrome is seen in both of these diseases, we compared the frequency of burning mouth syndrome in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 and patients with hypothyroidism referred to Rasht dental school in 1399.
Materials and MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, 196 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 196 patients with hypothyroidism were included in the study. Each participant in the study was assessed by asking the patient about the presence of burning pain in the oral mucosa. In cases with burning pain, the visual analogue scale criterion was used to measure the severity of pain.
ResultsBurning mouth syndrome was significantly higher in patients with diabetes mellitus (P = 0.022). There was no significant relationship between the mean level of FBS, HbA1C and TSH with burning mouth syndrome, while there was a significant relationship between the mean level of free T4 with burning mouth syndrome (P = 0.004). The mean level of free T4 was higher in patients with burning mouth syndrome. It was also found that aging has a positive correlation with the severity of burning pain (p <0.001).
ConclusionAccording to the results of the present study, it is necessary to prevent the occurrence of diabetes mellitus and consequently the development of this complication in the mouth. It is also important to monitor patients with diabetes mellitus and control their oral complications in collaboration with the medical team.

external nasal walls are an important factor in the drainage or obstruction of the ostiomeatal complex, therfor anatomical variations in the nasal cavity can elevate the risk of pathological sinus conditions. The aim of this study is to evaluate anatomical variations of paranasal sinuses and nasal cavities using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
Materials and MethodsThis investigation assessed CBCT images from 129 patients (aged 12-65 years; 82 females and 47 males) to specify the prevalence of anatomical variations of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity. We analyzed the data using the Mann-Whitney test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and chi-square test.
Resultsanatomical variation was observed for accessory maxillary sinus ostium (100%). Significant relationships were also found between the prevalence of middle turbinate-normal (P=0.03), nasal spine (P=0.01), and patients’ age. Also, significant correlations were found between middle turbinate-normal (P=0.04), uncinate process-normal (P=0.02), uncinate process-lamina terminslis (P=0.001), and septal deviation (P=0.006) and patients’ sex. Significant correlations were also found between some anatomical variations (p<0.05).
ConclusionCBCT is a reliable method for assessing anatomical variations of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity. When making preoperative assessments, surgeons and radiologists should be attention to the anatomical variations of the sinonasal region in order to inhibit perioperative complications.

Maxillary canines commonly have an ectopic eruption. This study aimed to assess the factors related to the ectopic maxillary permanent canines.
Materials and MethodsThis was a descriptive cross-sectional study of 1357 panoramic radiographs from patients 8 to 13 years old. The radiography was excluded if the patient had any developmental disease or if the panoramic image had poor quality. The ectopic canine was determined. It was also detected whether the ectopic canine was unilateral or bilateral. The quadrant of the ectopic canine, the presence of missing teeth, supernumerary teeth and other teeth with ectopic eruption were also reported. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 24 applying the Chi-square test at 0.05 significance level.
ResultsAmong the 1126 panoramic radiographs, 11.4% (128) had at least one canine with ectopic eruption. 64.1% (82) of patients with at least one ectopic canine were female and 35.9% (46) were male. (P=0.027) 69.5% (89) had unilateral ectopic canine and 30.5% (39) had bilateral ectopic canines. (P=0.001) 10.9% (14) of participants had missing teeth. 34.4% (44) of cases had other teeth with ectopic eruption and 3.1% (4) of cases had supernumerary teeth. The accompaniment of ectopic canine with other ectopic teeth was statistically significant. (P=0.022)
ConclusionEctopic maxillary canines with the prevalence of 11.4% were more common in females; were mostly located unilaterally, and were found with other teeth with ectopic eruptions.

dilaceration is a disturbance in tooth formation that produces a sharp bend or curve in the tooth. this anomaly has a negative effect on the treatment of root canals, orthodontics and surgery. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of root dilaceration using Cone Beam Tomography (CBCT).
Materials and MethodsIn this study, a total of 206 CBCT images(5434teeth) were analyzed for having dilaceration. The images were evaluated at the Multi Planner section in the coronal and axial view to find mesiodistal dilaceration and in the sagittal view to find buccolingual dilaceration. Deviation of more than 20 degrees of one-third of the apical part of the root in the longitudinal axis of the tooth was considered as dilaceration. Deviation of 20 to 40 degrees, was considered as mild dilaceration, deviation of 41 to 60 degree was considered as moderate dilacerations and deviation more than 61 degrees was considered as severe dilacerations. The data were analyzed by SPSS software version 21 and statistical analysis was performed by Chi Square test.
Resultsshowed that dilaceration was found in 69.4% of radiographic images and 7.5% of teeth. The most common intensity and direction in teeth with dilacerations were mild dilacerations (62.9%) and distal dilaceration (59.8 %), respectively. The prevalence of dilaceration was not definitely different in the sex and age (P>0.05), but its prevalence was significantly higher in maxilla than the mandible and in the maxillary right quadrant than the other quadrants(P<0.05). dilaceration was more common in posterior teeth and was more prevalence in maxillary second molars, mandibular second molars and mandibular first molars teeth respectively, which was statistically significant in type and number of teeth(P<0.05).
Conclusionaccording to the results of this study, dilaceration has a significant prevalence that shows the necessity of radiographic examination to determine the dilacerations, which is important to prevent complex problems during dental treatment

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two rotary instrument systems (ProTaper and Revo-s File) in removing calcium hydroxide residues from root canal walls
Materials and MethodsThirty human maxillary incisors were instrumented with the ProTaper System up to the F2 instrument, irrigated with 2.5% NaOCl,and filled with a calcium hydroxide intracanal dressing. After 7 days, the calcium hydroxide dressing was removed using the following rotary instruments:G1 - NiTi size 25, 0.06 taper, of the Revo-s File System; G 2 - NiTi size 25, 0.06 taper, of the protaper File System. The teeth were longitudinally grooved on the buccal and lingual root surfaces, split along their long axis, and their apical and cervical canal thirds were evaluated by SEM (×1000).
ResultsThe images were scored and the data were statistically analyzed using the Kruskall Wallis test. None of the instruments removed the calcium hydroxide dressing completely, either in the apical or cervical thirds, and no significant differences were observed among the rotary instruments tested (p > 0.05).
ConclusionTo achieve the best adaptation of filling material after root canal treatment, it is crucial to remove intracanal medication from the root canal walls. However, none of the irrigation regimens and different techniques were able to completely remove the CH from the root canal wall.
