Medicago rigiduloides E. Small is a mostly Asian species that was recently separated from the extremely closely related, mostly European species, M. rigidula (L.) All. Medicago is a large genus of about 90 species, but there has never been a study of how any of these interact geographically where they meet. This, the first such study, documents the distribution ranges of the two species in Iran, based on 14 representative populations. The two species are extremely difficult to distinguish morphologically, so in addition to analysis of their morphology, molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was conducted, and the degree of reliability of the diagnostic characters of the two taxa was assessed. Medicago rigidula, known to be mainly European, was found to have extended into Iran bordering the Caspian Sea. Medicago rigiduloides was found to be widely distributed in northwestern, western, southwestern, and central Iran, consistent with the hypothesis that the taxon is mainly Asian. Thus, the main distributions of the two taxa appear to be mainly parapatric, presumably related to different adaptations to the local ecology.

Water speedwells (Veronica anagallis-aquatica L.) mostly occur in damp freshwater places. They show a high level of phenotypic plasticity in response to variations in environmental factors, a characteristic that allows them to occur over a wide range of conditions. Populations of V. anagallis-aquatica are scattered in many parts of Iran and often have a wide variation in the same region while having a similar appearance in different regions. We attempt to provide an accurate estimate of diversity within and among populations. Also, using the analysis of habitat characteristics and morphological traits, we aim to determine the distribution pattern of specific morphotypes. Here, we present a morphometric study based on 39 morphological and four ecological characters for 576 individuals from the north, northwest, and center of Iran. The analyses of habitat factors and morphological traits showed that morphotypes were distributed in a specific habitat with a cline of diversity from the northeastern to the northwest, west, and center of Iran. Morphometric results showed a high level of intraspecific variability and diversity among populations. Seed weight, number of seeds per capsule, the length and width of the capsule, number of lateral racemes, number of pollen per flower, length of sepals, and peduncle position were the most important characters to predict the overall variation and diversity of the individuals and populations. Electrical conductivity and pH were important characters influencing the distribution of morphotypes.

The macro and micro-morphology of flowers and nutlets of 35 species of Boraginaceae belonging to the Tribe Cynoglosseae have been studied by light and scanning electron microscopes. These include Paracaryum (8 species), Mattiastrum (11 species), Microparacaryum (4 species), Rindera (4 species), Cynoglossum (3 species), Solenanthus (2 species), Trachelanthus (1 species), and Lindelofia (1 species). Nutlets morphology of the examined species showed significant variation in shape, size, and surface ornamentation. Two main types of nutlets were defined: Type I, without a wing, nutlets densely glochidiate, was observed in Cynoglossum, Solenanthus, Trachelanthus, and Lindelofia; Type II, characterized by winged nutlets, was found in all examined species of Paracaryum, Mattiastrum, Microparacaryum, and Rindera. Our results highlight the importance of the floral and nutlet characters for the identification of the most studied species, based on cluster analysis. The main aim of the present study is to investigate the macro and micro-morphological characteristics of the studied species for the taxonomic identification and species delimitation at the tribal level. For quick and easy identification of the species, identification keys based on floral characters have been developed.

On the basis of new floristic works, a distribution map of the genus Acanthophyllum is nearly identical to the distribution of Irano-Turanian Region. Three centers of diversity with high numbers of species are distinguished in the genus Acanthophyllum: the western and northern parts of Afghanistan (12 species belonging to 5 sections), southern parts of Turkmenistan (13 species belonging to 4 sections), and north-eastern parts of Iran (14 species belonging to 4 sections). According to the chromosome data, the maximum number of diploids, tetraploid and hexaploid species are found in S Turkmenistan, NE Iran, and W Afghanistan (centers of diversity). Furthermore, the areas far from the centers of diversity contain polyploid species, which are derived from diploid ancestors. The data obtained from the density and diversity of the species, endemics, sections, and chromosome counts seem to indicate that W Afghanistan, S Turkmenistan, and North-east Iran, are the centers of origin of the genus Acanthophyllum.

A population of Hydrocharis dubia of Hydrocharitaceae was discovered as a new record from the Caspian Sea coast in Mazandaran province. Phylogenetic analyses of both maximum parsimony and the maximum likelihood of DNA sequence data from the internal transcribed spacer region evidently confirmed the occurrence of H. dubia in Iran. We speculate that the verification of H. dubia in Iran out of its up to now reported range represents a non-indigenous introduction presumably caused by migratory waterfowl visiting the province while facilitating long seed dispersal. Regular monitoring is recommended to be applied in order to follow up its establishment and adaptation in the area, to control it as a potential noxious weed.
