Sowing date and genotype are factors affect different growth stages and yield of soybean. To evaluate the effect of sowing date and genotype on seed yield of soybean a field experiment was carried out as split plot arrangement in randomized complete block design with three replications at Safiabad Agricultural and Natural Resources Research and Education Center, Iran, in 2016 and 2018. The main plots consisted of four sowing dates (21st Januray, 9th February, 23rd February and 9th March) and twelve soybean genotypes (2001, 2002, 504, Saba, Katoul, Saman, Sari, SK93, SG2, SG5, Williams and Salend) were randomized in sub-plots. Results showed that delaying in sowing date led to reduction of flowering and growth duration of all soybean genotypes. Number of pod per plant reduced by 42% in 9th March sowung date compared to 21st Januray. The highest (36 pods) and the lowest (16 pods) number of pods per plant belonged to SK93 and Williams, respectively. The highest (872 kg.ha-1) and the lowest (782 kg.ha-1) seed yield obtained from 21st January and 9th March sowing date, respectively. SK93 genotype had the highest (1291 kg.ha-1) seed yield. Results of this experiment showed that lower seed yield (872 kg.ha-1) for the first sowing date of winter-sown soybean was not economically viable. Considering seed yield of SK93, further experimets are required to identify soybean genotypes adapted to winter planting.

Introduction of new crops is one of the strategic approaches for production of feed for livestock and hence protein requirements for the increasing population. White lupine (Lupinus albus L.), yellow lupine (L. luteus L.) and blue (narrow leaf) lupine (L. angustifolius L.) are legumes that can be used for production of feed for livestock and as result protein requirements for the increasing population. To evaluate the possibility of cultivation of lupine and to evaluate seed yield as well as agronomic traits of lupin germplasm, 141 accessions of three lupin species; white, yellow, and blue lupins, recieved from the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK), Germany, were grownin greenhouse and field in 2017-2018 to increase their seeds. Since only sufficient seeds obtained from white lupin accessions, 108 white lupin accessions with Dieta white lupin cultivar as control were evaluated using randomized complete block design with three replications at research field of Seed and Plant Improvement Institute, Karaj, Iran, in 2019 and 2020. Days to flowering, plant height, number of pod.plant-1, number of seed.pod-1, number of seed.plant-1 and seed yield were scored and recorded. Combined analysis of variance of data for white lupine accessions showed that there was significant differences among the studied genotypes for all traits. The highest mean grain yield was observed for genotypes; No. 1 (cv. Dieta), No. 27 and No. 9, No. 50 with 2180, 2130, 2100 and 2030 kg.ha-1, respectively. Therefore, the diversity for seed yield and yield components observed in this germplasm suggested that it is possible to identify the superior genotypes for different traits to initiate breeding program and to develop suitable cultivars adapted to different regions with different environmental and soil fertility conditions.

To investigate the effect of  the timing of nitrogen fertilizer application on grain yield and quality of bread wheat cultivars under terminal drought stress conditions, two field experiments were conducted at Agricultural Research Station of Miandoab in West Azerbaijan, Iran, in 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 cropping seasons. Experimental treatments were arranged as split plot factorial in randomized complete block design with three replications. Irrigation levels I1 = full irrigation, I2 = irrigation withholding from heading, I3 = irrigation witholding from anthesis stage) were assigned to main plots, 120 kg.ha-1 nitrogen at four application times (N1=20 kg.ha-1 at planting and 100 kg.ha-1 at the tillerign stage, N2 = 20 kg.ha-1 at the planting and 100 kg.ha-1 at stem elongation stage, N3 = 20 kg.ha-1 at the planting, 50 kg.ha-1 at the tillering stage with 50 kg.ha-1 at stem elongation stage, N4 = 20 kg.ha-1 at planting, 50 kg.ha-1 at tillering stage with 50 kg.ha-1 at heading stage) and five bread wheat cultivars (G1 = Zarrin, G2 = Pishgam, G3 = Orum, G4 = Zareh and G5 = Mihan) as factorial were randomized in subplots. Results showd that under terminal drought stress conditions (I2), concentrations of N, P and Zn of grain increased by 23%, 37% and 18%, respectively, however severe water shortage also reduced the concentrations of potassium (11%) and magnesium (45%). The timing of N3 and N4 fertilizer application times increased N, P, Fe and Mg concentrations of grain, while in the N1 fertilizer application time, only K concentration of grain increased. The highest amounts of N, P, Fe, Zn and Mg in severe water stress conditions (I2) were observed in the N3 fertilizer application time with drought tolerant cultivars cv. Mihan and cv. Pishgam, however under full irrigation conditions the distribution of nitrogen at spike emergence stage (N4) increased  N, P and Mg contents of grain. The highest grain yield (7026 kg.ha-1) obtained under N3 nitrogen fertilizer application time. The results of this experiment showed that with integrating of appropriate timing of nitrogen fertilizer application under terminal drought stress conditions and planting of new improved cultivars such as cv. Pishgam and cv. Mihan, bread wheat grain yield and its quality can be improved, in areas with similar environmental conditions.

To investigate the effect of planting date and planting pattern on yield and quality characteristics of forage maize cv. KSC703 in transplanting method, split plot factorial arrangement in randomized complete block design with three replications was employed at Ekbatan research station of Agriculture and Natural Resources Research and Education Center of Hamedan, Iran, in 2018 and 2019 growing seasons. Planting date at four levels; 05 May, 31 May, 26 June and 21 July with planting pattern at two levels; one-row with row spacing of 70 cm (conventional planting pattern) and two-rows with row spacing of 140 cm assigned to main plots and planting method at three levels; direct seeding, single and two seedlings were randomized in sub-plots. Plant density was 102,000 plants per hectare for all treatments. The highest fresh forage and protein yield obtained in the second planting date (65430 and 2437 kg.ha-1, respectively). In two-rows pattern, the fresh forage and protein yield were 20% and 14.5% higher than one-row pattern, respectively. Fresh forage and protein yield in single transplant were 11.5% and 10.8% higher than direct seeding and 6.6% and 7.4% higher than two seedlings, respectively. In early and late planting dates, single transplant had the highest fresh forage and protein yield (first planting date: 62883 and 2412 kg.ha-1 and third planting date: 57515 and 2115 kg.ha-1 and fourth planting date: 4755 and 1308 kg.ha-1, respectively). The rates of physical water productivity, net income and economic water productivity based on net income in two-rows pattern were 167.6%, 53.6% and 237% higher than in conventional one-row pattern, respectively. The rates of the above traits to replace direct seeding with single seedling increased by 42%, 12.1% and 33.8%, and to replace with two seedlings increased by 32.8%, 4.5% and 24.7% increase, respectively. Due to the significant increase in forage yield and water productivity as well as with 50% reduction in costs of irrigation tape under transplanting in two-rows pattern, this method (preferably as two seedlings for reducing production costs) is recommended as a suitable alternative method for direct seeding of forage maize production.

Climate change and the global warming phenomenon is one of the main concerns of human societies. In this study, the impact of climate change on rice, as the main crop in Guilan province, Iran and soybean production as the second crop was investigated. To adapt to the negative impact of climate change in future, optimal crop calendars were indentified for different rice and soybean cultivars using two periods of 2021-2035 and 2036-2050. We used a 12-year phenological dataset of two rice cultivars (Hashemi and Alikazemi) and two years data of two soybean cultivars (Williams and Hobbit). Moreover, we used downscaled meteorological parameters of MarkSimGCM data based on the output of three general circulation models (GCMs) under three different RCP scenarios. Finally, the aforementioned data were used as the inputs of the DSSAT crop model to simulate the genetic coefficients and crop yields of rice and soybeans. The results showed that yield values decreased as compared to the observation period. Rice, cv. Hashemi, yield decreased 31% under the RCP8.5 scenario within 2036-50 period and 23% for cv. Alikazemi as compared to the observation period. Model results indicated that 10 days of acceleration in planting date, in all scenarios and periods, will lead to higher crop yields than the current planting date. For the RCP8.5 scenario of 2036-50 period, changing the planting date reduced the yield by up to 15%. For soybeans unlike the rice, delaying the planting date will increase crop yield. Therefore, on the third planting date (6th of September) for soybeans cv. Williams, up to 24% reduction in seed yield will be mitigated. For cv. Hobbit, on average 28% seed yield increase was estimated as compared to the current planting date. In conclusion, shifiting the planting date for rice to the early days of growing season and delaying the planting date for second crop (soybean) can mitigate crops yield reduction due to climate change.

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the competition of soybean intercropped with niger in different planting ratios using randomized complete block design with four replications at Sari agricultural sciences and natural resources university in 2018 and 2019. The intercropping ratios were 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, and 100:0 (soybean:niger, respectively) using the replacement series. Results showed that intercropping significantly affected plant height, total dry matter accumulation at different growth stages, seed yield, oil, and crude protein yield of both crops. The highest plant height of soybean and niger was obtained in sole cropping of soybean and 75:25 planting ratio, respectively. The impact of competition on total dry matter accumulation up to 90 days after planting was positive and complementarity effect that changed to mutual cooperation after this stage. In addition, oil yield and crude protein yield of soybean and niger seeds in planting ratios were higher than niger (100: 0) and less than soybean in the sole cropping of soybean (100: 0). The maximum amounts of LER (1.28 and 1.23) were obtained in 50:50 and 75:25 intercropping ratios, respectively. Results showed that the complementarity effect between niger and soybean on seed yield in all intercropping ratios was greater than the selection effect. The increases in seed yield in intercropping ratio 50:50 and 25:75 was due to the largest share of the complementarity effect (76.2% and 59.7%, respectively) in seed yield. Therefore, selecting niger as a companion species in intercropping with soybean would lead to mutual cooperation relationship and mitigate the effect of competition.
