Soil-dwelling Entomobryomorphan Collembola from the Northeast of Iran were sampled for the first time as part of a biodiversity surveying study with the aim of improving ecosystem conservation. Materials were obtained by sampling in three different ecosystems including forest, rangeland and agricultural fields between 2018 and 2019. The specimens were cleared using either Nesbitt’s fluid or lactic acid and permanent microscopic slides were prepared using Hoyer’s medium. As the result of this study, twenty-nine species belonging to twenty-two genera and five families of the order Entomobryomorpha were identified. Among them, two genera and eight species are recorded for the first time from Iran. The new records are Desoria trispinata (MacGillivray, 1896), Drepanosira hussi Neuherz, 1976, Heteromurtrella sp., Orchesella flavescens (Bourlet, 1839), Willowsia bartkei Stach, 1965, Agrenia sp., and Isotomiella gracilimucronata Rusek, 1981. Micrographs of their important features and a key to the species are also provided.

According to a perspective, male and female copulatory organs have not more extreme morphologies. However, a skewed bias in males, -as well as the scanty taxonomic data on female genitalia, may explain why most evolutionary biologists failed to find acceptable evidence for the reproductive co-evolution in insects. A recent finding shows that the mechanical footing has a cooperative essence in the weevil genus Sitona. In this viewpoint, successful mating is achieved by the dynamic correspondence between the male endophallus and female genital lumen. The present work addresses some missing evidence in the genital traits of this taxon that may keep the hampered comprehensions under lock and key. The female bursal lumen in the studied species is provisioned with a pair of forklift-shaped structures (named the “codelocks”) that may provide for stabilizing the characteristic position of the male bio-syringe during copulation. This structure varies between the species based on the shape and direction of its paired levers, so that an elaborate algorithm possibly serves as the fuel of this device. However, in one of these, Sitona fairmairei (Allard, 1869), the levers perform a dual function in accordance to the lockback mechanism of the male copulatory organ. This species is also featured for having several campaniform mechano-receptors on the flanges of the male bio-syringe which are involved in the in-vivo navigation of this armature towards female spermathecal duct.

There are only limited experimental or observational data on vertical and horizontal flight capacity of Coccotrypes dactyliperda Fabricius, 1801 (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Scolytinae), a major pest in date palm plantations throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East. This paper provides a set of proxy data, using actual observations of colonisation rates of Phoenix canariensis (Chabaud, 1882) (Arecales, Arecaceae) seeds in a linear planting array at Alma Park (NSW, Australia). The majority of dispersal movements occurs between adjacent or near adjacent seeds, followed by palms in close proximity with movements less than 4–5 m. While the maximum observed dispersal distance is 350 m, data suggest that a 36 m gap between two groups of palms is beyond the flight/dispersal range of most C. dactyliperda individuals and that colonisation over such distances would be a rare event. Since seed location is aided by temperature-sensitive alcohol-mediated kairomones, the chances of a beetle finding a new seed to colonise over longer distances are increasingly diminished during the summer months, thereby reducing reproductive success.

This paper presents new information on black fungus gnats (Sciaridae) based on field studies at seven localities in Iran. Five sciarid species from the genera Bradysia Winnertz, Corynoptera Winnertz and Lycoriella Frey were collected with Malaise traps, yellow sticky traps, sweep net and an aspirator between 2015 and 2021: Bradysia cellarum Frey, 1948; B. ocellaris (Comstock, 1882); B. tilicola (Loew, 1850); Corynoptera fatigans (Johannsen, 1912); Lycoriella sativae (Johannsen, 1912). All species are first records for the Sistan and Baluchestan province. Bradysia tilicola (Loew) is new to Iran and was recorded for the first time in the Middle East. This brings the number of known sciarid species from Iran to seven. For five species are given a short morphological diagnosis and the global distribution. A map illustrates the distribution of all identified sciarid species in Iran.
