The purpose of revising curricula is to modify and complete them based on evaluations and the changes in needs and data to update them. It is necessary to identify and eliminate the defects of previous curricula and complete them according to the developments in the scientific community of the relevant fields. This article seeks to review the revised curriculum of philosophy of religion in the master's degree and evaluate its strengths and weaknesses in modifying and updating the previous curriculum in accordance with the goals of the curriculum and developments in the scientific community of philosophy of religion. This evaluation is done by library research method in four areas i.e. theoretical foundations, course titles, syllabus, and resources. In general, the most important strong points of this curriculum are: paying attention to the new and indigenous Muslim topics in the philosophy of religion, removing some less relevant titles such as "different approaches to religion" and adding some new relevant titles like "miracles" and "anthropology", arranging the syllabus in more detail and with better logical order (for example, for the title "proofs of God"), and finally proposing a wide range of sources. On the other hand, among the weaknesses, the following can be mentioned: ambiguity in applying the concept of " Islamic philosophy of religion", the addition of some unrelated titles such as "religion and lifestyle", failure to select a suitable syllabus for some course titles like "logic of understanding the religion", and at last absence of some major and primary sources.

One of the significant issues in religious epistemology is how to describe and justify faith. In religious epistemology, various descriptive and justifying models of faith have been proposed, one of which is faith as an “evidential venture.” In this view, one who is aware of the absence of sufficient reasons, in respect of evidential ambiguity, can Venture in favor of religious belief or faith. This article introduces two descriptive models of faith from the viewpoint of John Bishop and John Schellenberg –two significant proponents of faith as an evidential venture. The next step discusses how they evaluate their faith models in terms of four criteria: evidential, psychological, moral, and practical. John Bishop presents his faith model as a fully-doxastic venture, and John Schellenberg as a nondoxastic venture. Finally, by comparing these two models, some features that should be considered in proposing descriptive and justifying models of faith are mentioned: paying attention to diachronic justification besides the synchronic one, paying attention to the epistemic sensitivity of the believers based on an outsider concern about religion, and considering the personal and psychological distinctions among each person of believers and nonbelievers.

The question of bodily resurrection is one of the controversial topics about which Muslim thinkers have presented different opinions. Mohammad Hossein Gharavi Esfahani is one of the greatest thinkers and Shia scholars, who, influenced by the thoughts of his master Agha Ali Hakim, has put forward a distinct and considerable account of bodily resurrection which is in contrast with Mulla Sadra’s view. Esfahani, based on principles such as the initial belonging of the rational soul to the vaporous soul, the unity between the vaporous soul/body and the rational soul, the preparatory causality of the vaporous soul for the rational soul and the efficient causality of the rational soul for vaporous soul, the return of all existents to God in The arc of the ascent, as well as the particular influence of dispositions on the body, has argued that human bodies return to their rational souls in hereafter. In this article, Esfahani’s principles and arguments are criticized. Among the objections, the most important of which are as follows: misunderstanding of animality in the definition of human, inaccurate understanding of the causal relationship between soul and body and how they affect each other, inconsistency with the principle of impossibility of bringing back of an annihilated thing, and not paying attention to the role of imagination faculty in the explanation of bodily resurrection.

A leading figure of "new atheism", Sam Harris, maintains that religion and morality are in conflict. He, despite what religious believers generally think, does not take religion to be a basis for morality, instead, he believes that religion devastates morality and the moral system. In order to substantiate this claim, Harris takes two ways. First, based on some surveys, he argues that religious countries witness a moral decline, while atheist countries are morally in an acceptable situation. Accordingly, he seeks to induce by field studies that atheist countries are in a much better position than the theist countries in the moral indicators such as material well-being, respect for women's rights, human rights, etc.. As a result, it is atheism that has made society more moral. Second, by inspecting some religious doctrines, he decides that they are sources of violence and clashes among human beings and, consequently, lead societies toward moral decline. In this article, we examine Harris' claims concerning the relationship between religion and morality, concluding that they suffer from following flaws: not accurately determining the meaning of theism and atheism, misunderstanding about moarality and values, not paying attention to various indicators in human moral life, taking a weak scientific approach in evaluating the moral indicators of theist and atheist countries, not paying attention to the crimes of atheists throughout history, and having a superficial and false understanding of religious teachings.

In order to prove the doctrine of the union of the intelligent and the intelligible, Hakim Sabzavari has organized various arguments. From these arguments, the one examined in this article is based on these proximate principles: the classification of humans based on perceptions and dispositions, and the embodiment of actions. Hakim Sabzavari has placed people in three main groups according to the perfection of the soul and the degree of intellectual actuality: 1. those who approach God as much as possible, 2. the companions of the right hand, and 3. the companions of the left hand. Although the intellect and the union of the intelligent and the intelligible are best crystalized in the first group, each group has its requirements for the union. The argument focuses on the union of renewable dispositions in imperfect souls, i.e., the second and third groups. According to Hakim Sabzavari's understanding of the embodiment of actions, imperfect souls are free from prime matter, but due to the unity of the knower and the known, engaging in altering and renewing things in the world creates a secondary nature for the knower. Consequently, the embodiment of the actions entails the emergence of essential requirements, i.e., renewability, change, and alteration. Although some have tried to undermine this argument, in this article, it has been shown that the lack of attention to the mentioned principles and the lack of a deep and complete understanding of transcendent wisdom caused them not to receive the correct content of the argument, and also not to make a fair assessment of it.

Immanuel Kant has addressed the problem of evil in many of his works. The neglected part of Kant’s thought -especially among Muslim scholars- is his philosophical objections and defenses regarding the problem of evil in pre-critical and early critical periods. Many of his ideas in this subject remained unchanged until the end of his scientific life and were inspiring for the formation of his later theories. This article, using a descriptive-analytical method, examines the principles of Leibniz’s Theodicy (i.e., evil as privation, theory of the best of all possible worlds, natural evil as punishment, and linking moral evil to free will) from Kant’s viewpoint and shows their role in the formation of his Theodicy in the pre-critical period. Contrary to Leibniz, he defends the positive reality of evil by distinguishing between logical contradiction and real contradiction. Moreover, based on the principles of Newtonian physics, Kant does not consider natural evil as punishment. However, he is in agreement with Leibniz in justifying moral evil according to mankind’s free will. Regarding the best of all possible worlds theory, it plays the most important role in Kant’s Theodicy in the pre-critical period. Although some objections to this theory are found in Kant’s articles, he seriously has upheld it even at the beginning of the critical period and after his Copernican revolution.

Suffering is one of the significant topics in practical theology. Throughout history, Muslim thinkers have dealt with this issue in different ways. In this article, using a descriptive-analytical method, we intend to analyze the view of Qāḍī ʿAbd al-Jabbār - a Muʿtazilite theologian - about reducing the suffering of believers. He proposes three ways to alleviate the suffering of the believers: (1) revising the believers’ attitude to suffering; (2) avoiding making a judgment about suffering, which means not considering the suffering as a punishment from God; and (3) acknowledging the suffering as compensation, that means God will make up for suffering in the hereafter. First of all, ʿAbd al-Jabbār tries to correct the attitude of believers towards suffering by suggesting that not every suffering is bad and not every suffering is a kind of oppression. He believes these two presuppositions are the main causes of people’s wrong view of suffering. Secondly, by referring to several rational and narrative reasons and by rejecting reincarnation, he shows that the sufferings of this world cannot be considered as the punishment of human actions, either in the assumed previous life (according to the belief of reincarnationists) or in the present life. As a result, believers should not be involved with new suffering (i.e. they have been angered by God). Finally, by proposing the notion of afterlife compensation, he completes his project on reducing the believers’ suffering.

As it is well-known in theology, performing miracles is the main way prophets used to show that they are honest in their claims and are the true messengers of God. In contrast to this famous opinion, some theologians have not considered miracles as proof of the truth of prophecy. Muslim thinkers such as Mullah Sadra, al-Ghazali, Averroes, ‘Abd al-Razzaq Lahiji, and Hiji Mulla Hadi Sabzavari believe that a true believer does not base his faith and certainty on seeing a miracle from a prophet, and the religion which is the result of a miracle is the religion of ordinary people. According to them, miracles cannot bring about intellectual certainty; moreover, it is difficult to distinguish them from magic. In this article, after considering the objections in Islamic intellectual tradition, some other critiques in terms of the role of miracles in proving prophecy are introduced: the reports of miracles are not adequately sequential and multiple; the miracles are exclusively reported by the believers; there is no practical criterion for identifying miracles; the claim that miracles are related to the dominant art and techniques of the prophet’s time cannot be proved, and miracles can be explained in a completely natural –and not supernatural– way. Accordingly, it has been demonstrated that miracles narrated in religions do not serve theological functions desired by theologians. However, the best way for knowing a true prophet is investigating his teachings and experiencing his spiritual aura.

Experimental philosophy is a new approach in analytic philosophy emerging in the last decade. Experimental philosophy emphasizes the intuitions of ordinary people and compares them with philosophers' intuitions to understand and analyze philosophical problems. One important philosophical and theological issue that can be addressed with such an approach is the problem of evil. Since in the philosophy of religion, the problem of evil is raised in two logical and evidential forms, the research questionnaires were designed to cover both accounts, although more emphasis was placed on the evidential problem of evil. The statistical population of this research was 100 people from different social groups who did not have special studies in philosophical and theological fields. The findings of this research show that the public's sympathy with the logical account of the problem of evil is more than their sympathy with the evidential one. However, the ratio between the answers and all the questions indicates a significant inconsistency in the folks' understanding of the problem of evil and its relationship with theism.

There are three accounts of the problem of evil: (1) Logical problem of evil (The logical incompatibility between the existence of God and His attributes and the existence of evil); (2) The evidential problem of evil (Evil as evidence against the rationality of theism); (3) Existential problem of evil (Incompatibility between religious beliefs and a person's lived experience). The most important defenses proposed in contemporary Islamic philosophy (taken from the thoughts of Tabatabai and Motahhari) against the logical problem of evil are: (1) Evil is not real and is something imaginary; (2) Evil is of non-existence; (3) Evil is something relative; (4) The existence of a creature that its good is more than its evil is necessary; (5) The matter is the source of the evil; (6) The existence of evil is necessary for the existence of good; (7) The existence of evil is necessary for perceiving the good; (8) Evil is the result of not having a holistic look at the world; (9) Evil is the result of looking at the world from a human perspective; (10) Evil is the result of human free will. However, the modern philosophy of religion has raised strong moral objections to traditional defenses and theodicies, including contemporary Islamic philosophy. Accordingly, these defenses: (1) Somehow defend and legitimize the evil; (2) Have a passive and inactive position on the evil; (3) Have an instrumental look at the human and his suffering; (4) violate human autonomy; (5) Neglect the variety of psychological traits of human beings, and overlook the extent, diversity, and dispersion of sufferings; (6) Neglect the suffering of animals, children, and disabled people. Investigating these criticisms necessitates the need to modify, complete, invent and present new types of defenses in Islamic philosophy, ones that pay special attention to the practical aspect of evil.

In the thought of Shihab al-Din al-Suhrawardi and Linda Zagzebski, two famous philosophers from two different eras and civilizations, we come across some components that lead us to a common approach. The value of knowledge, according to both philosophers, is a result of the value of processes, without which philosophy is doomed to fail. The three common necessities in the philosophy of Suhrawardi and Zagzebski are: (1) The necessity of internal elevation, which upholds the qualitative and internal process of knowledge by trying to strengthen the human will. (2) The necessity of unifying wisdom. According to this necessity, a person thinks about the unity of human opinion and experience by trusting in his/her thought and other intellectual traditions. Moreover, to reach self-cultivation and also to understand and elevate wisdom, a person requires personal intuition and creativity in each era. (3) The necessity of narrative, which makes the development of philosophical intentions dependent on the genius in thinking, the genius in creating motivation, and also the return to intellectual and moral patterns. With a new look at the factors of knowledge promotion, this research has addressed some epistemologically neglected topics that the spiritual and epistemological life of philosophy depends on it.

Keith Ward tries to choose a new approach to religious pluralism called "soft and open religious pluralism." Considering the question "What are Keith Ward's elements of religious pluralism?" this paper attempts to explain how he overcame John Hick's religious pluralism and introduced his soft and open religious pluralism, as well as its logical requirements. By criticizing John Hick's extreme approach to religious pluralism, particularly its epistemic basis and unacceptable results, Ward emphasizes the possibility of divine manifestation in all religious traditions, the importance of the doctrinal dimension of religion, the avoidance of adequacy of religion, and the development of religious worldviews. He believes it is unacceptable to believe that all religions have one internal core that can be understood only by a limited number of people. According to his viewpoint, the experience of divine reality cannot be wholly explainable and comprehensible. Also, making a difference between internal and external forms of religion may lead to an exclusivist approach. Some of the more important consequences of Keith Ward's tendency to open religious pluralism are: openness to other religions, not adopting an exclusivist viewpoint, respecting religious struggles and striving to excel in one's own spirituality, fostering mutual understanding among religions, and recognizing that our understanding and commitment to our religion is insufficient.
