In the post-World War I era in Europe, returning soldiers and their relatives experienced loss, mourning and melancholia. In this regard, Sigmund Freud, in his effort to introduce the new science of psychoanalysis, magnifies the question of melancholia with the article “Mourning and Melancholia”. He attempts to clarify symptoms and influences of loss in people who have a traumatic experience of loss in many ways, such as war, death of siblings or parents and even failure in their romantic relationships. Afterwards, Jacques Lacan created innovations and drew an explicit distinction between ego and subject. On the other hand, Julia Kristeva addressed new dimensions of melancholia with a special perusing of both and demonstrated her point of view about the relationship between melancholia and the semiotic, the symbolic, the chora, the abjection, and the differences between objectal and the narcissistic depression. Correspondingly, Samuel Beckett's plays “All That Fall” and its characters Mrs and Mr Rooney, and “Endgame” with Hamm, Clov, Nagg and Nell, contain the problem of loss and its consequences on two distinct levels, respectively with a journey from objectivity to subjectivity, from the person to the world or from the ego to the way it looks at the world. Both plays are written in 1957 and have a common content about loss, depression and melancholia. This essay seeks to introduce the play “All That Fall” through the study of melancholia as a prelude to the Endgame’s atmosphere and to prove that the commonalities of the two justify not only their simultaneous reading but also two different versions of melancholia. Beckett conducts the themes of death, deterioration, and the absurdity at the center of his creative works during which they lead us from the loss to melancholia. In this respect, segmental and delirious language, loss of pity and self-confidence, obliteration of desire, desire to stay in the chora, and hesitation before any action are the implications of melancholia. The analysis of Mrs Rooney requires Freud and his profound insight in order to reveal her pretext of doing nothing and the reason why she shows no respect to others. Clov does not show any proficiency in his actions; accordingly, all characters can represent one of the aspects of melancholia.

In this article, the moral aspects of the concept of tragic catharsis from Aristotle's point of view are studied. This study is based on the connections between moral aspects in the concept of tragic catharsis with the same aspects in musical catharsis from the viewpoint of Aristotle. In “Poetics”, it is stated that tragedy causes catharsis in the audience by arousing the emotions of fear and pity. Aristotle mentioned the term catharsis only once in “Poetics”. Apart from this, in the eighth chapter of his treatise on “politics”, he discussed the types of catharsis resulting from music. In the eighth chapter of his “Politics”, Aristotle believes that some types of music are more effective in the moral education of the audience. These more effective types arouse the audience's emotions with processes far from extremes, and the result of this arousal of emotions is the balancing of those emotions in the audience. As in “Nicomachean Ethics”, the main condition for virtuous action ensuring happiness is the observance of the rule of moderation, and for tragedy in “Poetics”, which is the imitation of actions and life, such a condition is given for the virtuous action of tragic character. In “Politics” also is pointed out that works of good imitation (including music and tragedy) must be produced through moral simulation with the objective objects of their representation in reality that are influenced by emotions. Thus, tragic catharsis under certain conditions, with mechanisms similar to musical catharsis, provides the moral moderation of human emotions. The questions of this research are as follows: First, what are the connections between the moral aspect of tragic catharsis and musical catharsis? And secondly, what is the connection between the feelings of pleasure and pain resulting from musical catharsis with these feelings in tragedy from a moral point of view? This is a qualitative research and it has been done in a descriptive-analytical way based on library data (mainly Aristotle's original works). Also, due to the large number of complex technical terms in Aristotle's work, a specialized method of confrontation between translated texts and the authentic English version has been performed as part of the research method.

Knowing the music of the past of Iran or Persian- Islamic tradition is only possible by studying the texts, since old music is not available to us and cannot be heard today, so the only way of studying old music is studying musical texts. As music is a cultural phenomenon interwoven in the vast network of cultural phenomena, knowing music requires knowing culture in all its aspects; therefore, relying only on the technical texts about music theory is inadequate and deficient. Most of the musical texts, nowadays, are limited to the music theory books from Peripatetic school and Systematic school and other texts types that contain valuable information are neglected and because of that historical musicology is limited to the technical aspect of music theory and chronological approaches to the Maqams, Iqas, Lahns. The present study is about the typology of musical texts and attempts to explain what a musical text is, and which texts are musical; in other words, which type of historical texts can be regarded as musical texts, and each type of musical text is related to which aspect of music as a cultural phenomenon. This study introduces eight types of texts and shows what aspects of music as a cultural phenomenon are illustrated by each type. These types include: 1- music theory books with mathematical- philosophical approach, 2- musical texts in practical context and biographies, 3- religion and jurisprudence books, 4- books of Sama, 5- history books that contain general history and travelogues, 6- literary books, 7- scientific books such as those related to medicine and astronomy, 8- texts about visual arts including miniature, ancient instruments, pottery paintings and reliefs on the walls. These eight types are first layers of cultural texts that can be considered to be musical texts and each of them can shed light on some aspects of music.

This research examines the use of the "complementary theory" developed by Alireza Mashayekhi in the first movement of his piano piece "In Search of Lost Time" from the collection "Gardens of Iran". Mashayekhi’s theory primarily relates to melody and harmony. According to this theory, all intervals that contribute to the formation of a tonal chord are omitted. Therefore consonant intervals (minor and major third and minor and major sixth) are considered to be “foreign” intervals. On the other hand, the intervals designated as dissonant in classical music are regarded as “related” intervals. Accordingly, the second and its complementary interval, the seventh, are often used. The “half octave” (augmented fourth) also plays an important role. However, the composer mentions that the use of its complementary interval (diminished fifth) should be considered well, because of its relationship to tonal harmony. However, if an augmented fifth is created in the melody by two consecutive major thirds, this is not seen as a problem. For Mashayekhi, the development of melody and chords are the two most important techniques in the composition of the work. This study also shows how the composer selects intervals to form the melody and complements them with “added notes”. Mashayekhi emphasizes that the melody is a movement between two points. He fills this gap with the help of complementary notes. These can have chromatic or diatonic distances to the beginning and end notes. For example, the space between G and A can be filled with F and F# as the complementary note for G and G# and Bb as the complementary note for A. In the "complementary theory" the formation of chords is based on fifths. Mainly three and four-part chords and their inversions are used. These can also be supplemented by added notes. Another aim of this research, besides the examination of the "complementary theory" with regard to interval structure, harmony and melody, is to observe how elements of Iranian music are merged with elements of classical western music. The atmosphere of Iranian modal music is clearly noticeable in Mashayekhi’s melodies. To evoke the character of Iranian music, the composer uses for example intervals of descending seconds and the simultaneous minor second to create the impression of a quarter tone. Also in this context Mashayekhi uses the alteration of tones as well as added notes. This allows him to switch between different modes of Iranian music.

Filmmakers use a variety of sources to create cinematic works. Movies are mostly adapted from literature and novels, but they are also adapted from other branches of art such as visual arts, music and even architecture. Photography is also one of the arts that has been adapted into movies. In the present study a film which has been adapted from photography is examined. Steven Spielberg's “Saving Private Ryan” is based on the photographs of Polish war photographer Robert Capa. The main question of this research is “How have Capa's photos been adapted to create this film?” The main purpose of the research was to determine the adapted items and to specify how these photos have been adapted. This is a descriptive-analytical research and the data is collected from written sources and internet sites. The movie has also been watched and analyzed. Since it can be said that the nature of photography and cinema is similar, photographers and filmmakers use similar tools to create images. The camera lens and film that are used, as well as the technical settings that are utilized for both media are somewhat similar, and this similarity makes it possible to create similar images in them. Except the subjects of Capa's photos, which are depicted in the first sequence of the film, the director, and especially the cinematographer, have adapted the photographer's work like composition and visual effects such as camera height, depth of field, contrast, color, sharpness and texture of the images. But such technical adaptations are not recognizable by ordinary spectators and do not have a strong effect on the audience's attention.

There is widespread agreement that since the publication of Northrop Fry's Anatomy of Criticism, the myth criticism has become one of the most important and fruitful branches of literary criticism, which has dominated academic literary study in Britain and the United States. It seems that all samples of all versions of the mythic criticism share the same two features. The first one is the priority of the art works. They always start with the text and then look for the manifestation of myths or archetypes in it. Second, their view of mythology is usually static. They pay little attention to the changes and transformations of mythological elements and themes throughout history. As a result, they seem oblivious to valuable findings of comparative mythology. In this article, a new approach is introduced that can be called myth-based criticism. It is different from the common examples of myth criticism in both ways. Unlike other versions of mythic criticism, we start with a myth and its historical transformations and then seek for its manifestations in texts. In this approach, using comparative studies and understanding the transformation process of myths, the hidden links of works of art are uncovered. This article consists of two parts, one is theoretical and the other practical. In the theoretical part, a brief introduction to myth criticism and its history is presented, then the principles of myth-based criticism are offered. In the second part, a practical example of myth-based criticism is provided. First, a brief description of the myths of bull-slaying and the transformation of such myths throughout history, with emphasis on Persian mythology is presented. Finally, the reflection of these myths in two important works of Iranian cinema, the Cow by Dariush Mehrjui and Qeysar by Masoud Kimiaei are examined. The results show that in this way it is possible to decipher some hidden connections and ambiguous points in these two works. What we have in mind is to establish a new method of art criticism that can be presented as an Iranian criticism method. Myth-based criticism can be considered as an Iranian way of criticism because few cultures like the ancient culture of Iran have a treasure of transformed myths and epics, and this is exactly the starting point for establishing a myth-oriented critique.

The main goalof this researchis to analyze and investigate rhetoricalellipsis and its effect infilm editing. Rhetorical ellipsis in cinema is one of the methods in which a part of a film is omitted in order to an effective and the implicit purposes. Studying this literary device in cinema by explaining different reasons and motivations provides a clear explanation of how films are constructed and how they affect the audience. In this research, with a neoformalist approach and a descriptive-analytical method, and using library sources and audio-visual documents (films), the effects of Rhetorical ellipsis in the editing of 11 films from Iranian cinema have been investigated. First, using rhetoric, a precise definition of rhetorical ellipsis and its differences with compression has been provided. The main difference between rhetorical ellipsis and compression is that in compression attention is paid to shortening and creating brevity, in fact in compression is omitted some of the very common recurring words that are obviously understood. While the main goal of rhetorical ellipsis is to create mental and emotional effects in the audience and the removed part is not easily identified, and understanding it requires more thinking. In the following, after looking at the history and types of this ellipsis in the editing of the world cinema, examples of Iranian cinema have been analyzed. The results of the research showed that the rhetorical ellipsis in the editing of films had led to defamiliarization by creating different implicit meanings and changing the audience's conventional attitude toward the film. By ignoring the audience's expectations and preconceptions, the rhetorical ellipsis challenges them. When they are waiting to see the continuation of the film, the rhetorical ellipsis attracts their attention by not showing it.The origin of the effect of rhetorical ellipsis is in using the audience's imagination to understand the omitted parts. In other words, Audience participation to understand the meaning of the film while creating pleasure will make the film more effective. The dynamics of rhythm, creating emotional shocks, intensifying emotions, creating ambiguity, observing the appropriate situation of the audience, reflecting the mentalities and emotions of the characters in the film, and creating a cinematic metaphor are some of the uses of rhetorical ellipsis in films. Rhetorical ellipsis by not following the requirements of the story has led to an implicit and special way of storytelling, which needs more thought and rethinking to understand.
