  • Effect of Occlusal Splints on the Electromyographic Activities of Masseter and Temporal Muscles During Maximum Clenching
Omid Savabi, Farahnaz Nejatidanesh, Saeed Khosravi Page 1
    Objectives
Despite the broad use of occlusal splints their efficacy is a source of controversy. In this study the effectiveness of stabilization splint on the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles in healthy individuals was investigated.
    Method and Materials
The stabilization splint was made for twenty-five healthy individuals. Surface EMG recordings of masseter and temporal muscles were done during maximum clenching without the splint and immediately after application of splint. The relative level of activity in the masseter and temporal muscles was quantified by means of Activity Index. Paired t-test and Wilcoxan signed -rank test were used for data analysis.
    Results
The mean EMG activities of masseter and temporal muscles were 0.7712 and 1.0488 without splint and 0.8396 and 0.9276 with splint. There was no significant difference between the EMG activities ofboth muscles before and after insertion of the splints. The activity index increased after application of the stabilization splint. (-17 .15 VS -4.4). This increase was also insignificant.
    Conclusion
Immediate application of stabilization splint has no significant effect on the activity of masseter and temporal muscles. It could decrease the relative activity of the temporal to the masseter muscle (increasing of activity index).

  • Analysis of Dentists' Knowledge of X-Ray Protection and Radiobiology in Isfahan
Mahnaz Sheikhi, Forouzanossadat Hossaini, Farnaz Ebrahimi Page 2
    Introduction
Along with the increasing development of X-ray diagnostic applications, the individuals dealing in any manner with this ray are obliged to be appropriately trained for the adverse effects of and protection against, X-ray and get fully acquainted with the same. A group dealing with X-ray are the dentists. This study generally aims at surveying the level of Isfahan city dentists'' knowledge ofX-ray protection & radiobiology.
    Methods
We initially gained a permit from the Province Deputy of Treatment and Medicine and then referred at random to 210 dentistry offices to distribute prearranged questionnaires to the dentists so that they complete them in our presence. We thus assessed their knowledge of protection for patients, radiographers'' work environment & X-ray radiobiology.
    Results
The distribution of relative frequency of the dentists under study in connection with their knowledge of environmental protection was respectively "good", "average", "poor" and "very good". The same distribution regarding protection for patients, radiographers & radiobiology was respectively "good", "average", "very good" and "poor". On total, regarding the level of protection and radiobiology knowledge, 67.6% of the dentists lay in the "good", 21.9% in the "average", 10% in the "very good" and 0.5% in the "poor" groups. 126 out of 210 offices were equipped with radiography machine and the mean knowledge score of the equipped (centres) dentists
was 61.5, whereas that of the unequipped dentists was 51.76.
    Discussion
Regarding the T.test results, p value < 0.05, a statistically significant difference exists between the above mentioned 2 groups, i.e., the mean knowledge score of the dentists equipped with radiography machine regarding protection and X-ray radiobiology is higher than that of the unequipped dentists.

    ]ntroduction
The most common disease of oral cavity is dental caries. Dental caries cause significant economical loss due to heavy expenses of dental treatment. The most important way to reduce this loss is attention to prevention measures. One of the criteria for evaluation of oral and dental health is DMFT index. The age groups of 35 to 44 and 6 to 12 years-old are the recommended age groups for determination of the DMFT index by the world health Organization.
    Methods and materials
The aim of this study was to determine possible DMFT indices in Iranian villagers and Afghali refugees living in yillages of Isfahan province aged 35 to 44 and 6 to 12 years. Two hundred and twenty women ( 110 Iranian and 110 Afghan ) and 256 men (128 Iranian and 128 Afghan) were examined for DMFT index. For reduction of the influence of Iran environment on the index, only the last five years refugees were examined. Only 20 cases ( 10 girls and 10 boys) of 6-12 years old Afghan children were available so they were compared with 20 (10 girls an d 10 boys) Iranian village children. None of the cases examined had the regular habit tooth brushing. T -student test was used for statistical analysis.
    Results and Discussion
DMFT indices were 3.7±1:2.6 and 0.6±1 in Iranian and Afghan boys respectively (t= 3.5) (significant correlation, P

  • Localization of the Maxillary U nerupted Canine with a Single Panoramic Radiograph
Mahnaz Sheikhi, Shahrzad Sheikholeslam, Nasab Page 6
    Introduction
This study aims at developing a reliable method for the localization of the maxillary unerupted canine with a single panoramic radiograph.
    Materials and Methods
A total of 45 panoramic radiographs including 56 maxillary unerupted canines were evaluated. The ratio o the mesiodistal width of the unerupted canine to that of the homo-lateral incisor canine (canine-incisor index = CII) and the ratio o the width of the unerupted canine to that of the contra-lateral canine (canine- canine index = CCI). Unerupted canine were calculated in patients with unilateral unerupted canine. The crown height of each unerupted canine was classified into 3, apical, middle and coronal positions in the vertical plane relative to the adjacent incisor. All of the unerpted 56 teeth were then operated and precisely localized.
    Results
The results from the analysis of the ratios obtained showed an overlap in the range of CII buccally ( 1.06-1.46) and palatally (1.12-1.53) teeth, the crown ofwhich were apical to the adjacent tooth root, whereas the unerupted teeth with coronal and middle crowns showed a significant difference in the labial (0.94-1.12) and palatal CII (1.16-1.33) & labial (0.81-1.15) and palatal (1.16-1.33) CCI.
    Discussion and Conclusion
It can be concluded from the above mentioned findings that, if the vertical factor and CII are applied simultaneously, panoramic radiography can be a useful indicator for the localization of the maxillary unerupted canine.
