    In order to evaluate the effect of liothyronine formulated by Iran Hormone Co.(LT3,IH), 20 patients with primary hypothyroidism received 25mg LT3-IH daily. Another 40 hypothyroids were randomly divided into 4 groups and entered a double blind clinical trail. Two groups received 37.5 and 50mg LTrIH and other two groups took 37.5 and 50mg Cytomel (LTr SKF). Serum T4, T3 and TSH concentrations and resin T3 uptake were measured by commercial kits before and one month after intervention. After one month therapy with 25g LT3-IH, T3 increased from 80±33 to 142±36 ng/dl and TSH decreased from 58±24 to 0.5±0.7 /AJ/m\. Both LT3-IH and Cytomel increased T3 and decreased T4 and TSH concentration; TSH 62±28 & 81±39 before and 0.8±0.7 & 4.0±4.5 after one month of 37.5/;g T, daily; TSH 78±31 & 82±38 before and 0.5±0.4 & 0.4±0.6, mU/ml, respectively one months after daily ingestion of 50 mg LT3-IH and Cytomel, respectively. This study demonstrates similar effectiveness of LT3-IH and Cytomel in reduction of serum TSH and elevation of serum T3 in patients with hypothyroidism.

    Tc-99m-L, L-Ethylencsysteine (Tc-99m-EC) is a new renal radiopharmaceutical introduced as an alternative for Tc-99m MAG3. Twenty-three normal volunteers and patients in different. stages of renal disease were evaluated with Te-99m EC and Tc-99m DTPA. The mean initial uptake of EC was significantly higher as compared to DTPA. There was a high correlation between rectangular and hand-drawn ROls for kidney and background, 0.96 and 0.94 for right and left kidney, respectively. There was no significant difference between supra and subrenal background activities. A high correlation was also noticed between renal uptake of both agents divided by their injected original dose, and with correlation coefficient of 0.88 and 0.85 for the right and left kidneys, respectively. The relative right kidney uptake of two agents was nearly similar (with correlation coefficient of 0.92). The quality of the renogram generated with EC was belter than those obtained with DTPA. The results show that Tc-99m EC has good characteristics to be used as an agent for evaluation of renal function and morphology.

    We separated platelets from whole blood and incorporated them into In-Ill and Te-99m agents. Sn-GHA, Tropolone, Oxine (sulphate) and HMPAO were used to diffuse radionuclides into the platelets. The effects of time, temperature, PH of incubation media; volume and concentration of ionophore; and volume and activity of ln-l 13m C13 and Te-99m on labeling efficiency were studied.

    The role of the nuclear medicine has changed, from the early days when it was the only alternative to x-rays, to the present, when nuclear images are interpreted in light of specific metabolic processes, not anatomy. The development of specific receptor targeting radiopharmaceuticals, markers of viability using PETor SPECT, analogues of neurotransmitters etc., have placed the nuclear medicine physician into the realm of an in vivo biochemist or pharmacologist, or an applied physiologist. The current role of nuclear imaging is not merely to detect an abnormality, but to characterize the pathophysiology, risk stratify, direct therapy, and offer prognosis. As we recognize that the information obtained from a scintigram is occurring below the cellular level, we are entering the age of "Molecular Nuclear Medicine".

    A man with acute myelogenous leukemia, treated with chemotherapy, had a decrease in circulating formed blood elements. Bone marrow biopsy revealed necrosis. Imaging with In-Ill chloride demonstrated activity in the liver, but not in the spleen or bone marrow. Eighteen days later, the circulating blood count had risen; a repeat bone marrow biopsy showed the return of blood cell precursors. Follow-up In-111 chloride study at that rime showed uptake in both the spleen and vertebrae, in addition to the liver. Hence, the spleen and bone marrow had "recovered" function. In the present study, potential causes of this change are discussed.

    Thallium 201 whole body scintigraphy was performed in a 30 year old patient with diffuse osseous metastatic disease secondary to glioblastoma multiforme. Multiple sites of Thallium uptake correlated with the findings on serial bone scans and radiographs. Bone biopsy of a lower lumbar vertebra confirmed that the metastases were of glial origin.
