According to the standard view, emotions are always obstacles to the proper thinking and in order to think properly we should try our best not to be affected by emotions. Catherine Elgin rejects the generality of this view and believes that in many cases emotions have reliable epistemic products. But it seems firstly that Elgin’s argument for this claim cannot be defended and secondly even if we can give a right interpretation of her view it is not what the standard view rejects.

One of the most significant issues about the inference to the best explanation (IBE) is whether it is an independent argument, or can be reduced to one of the common arguments in logics. Thus we should examine the relation between abduction and other types of proofs. Since abduction cannot be reduced to syllogism, our discussion will concentrate on induction and speculation (speculative propositions). As to the relation of abduction with induction, two views have been proposed (a) the view that reduces one to the other, which is of two types: (1) some like Harman, Josephson, and Psillos reduce induction to IBE, and (2) some like Fumerton, reduce IBE to induction. (B) the view that rejects the reduction and takes them to be independent. Pierce and more recently Schurtz are advocates of this view. The three views above can be categorized under two views: reductionist and non-reductionism; this paper defends the latter. I also deal with the relation between speculation and abduction. Despite similaries, they are not reducible to one another. Thus the paper holds the independence of abduction from other types of arguments.

This paper seeks to provide a report of the psychological views of the Imamiah theologians (mutakalimin) of the mid-period (4th to 7th centuries) and their historical developments. On the other hand, the paper is to examine the roles of these theories in providing an account of the problems of resurrection. In order to acquaint the reader with the background of some 4th century views, we need to address some Mutazili views about the human nature.

In the second formula of categorical imperative (act so that you treat humanity, whether in yourself or any other person, always, as an end and never as a means only), Kant emphasizes upon the intrinsic equal value of each person which does, in fact, enunciate a fundamental moral, political and religious principle presupposed in the ordinary moral judgments of nearly everyone today. Intrinsic dignity of persons, first, excludes him from thingness and justice in political domain. Persons are "self-existent" ends, having worth simly because they exist. Dignity for persons not only confines the others but also oneself (self-respect & self-regard), and therefor gives rise to duties for others and the self. Dignity for persons imply benevolence (good will) but it is not enough. Sympathy in imagination and empathy in feeling and emotion, and beneficence in practical domain is necessary. In the all, these views are based on the practical reson not moral sense. In this paper I analyse Kant’s view and implications and presuppositions.

In his detailed discussion of prophecy, Aquinas talks about the way the prophetic knowledge is acquired, and takes the most appropriate supernatural cognition of the prophet to be an imaginational one. In this paper I will talk about the characteristics of this special cognition. I will first talk about the faculty of imagination in Aquinas, then discuss about his position against Ibn Sina which takes the prophetic knowledge to be a perfection of the faculty of imagination. Aquinas takes the prophet as a normal human individual and takes his prophecy to be a divine intervention without there being any capacity inside the prophet which distinguishes him from other human beings. In order to reject the interference of the prophetic imaginations with the images of the perception, Aquinas upholds the isolation of the prophet's perceptions at the time of receiving the prophecy. This is against the account given by some Muslim philosophers such as Fārābī.

In some of his works, Fakhr Razi, the well-known philosopher and Quranic interpreter of the sixth century, has presented Quranic arguments for the immateriality of the soul, which is grounded in his own interpretation of some of Quranic verses. In this paper, we will briefly introduce Razi’s view about the immateriality of the human soul, and then deal with his Quranic arguments for the soul-body distinction and the immateriality of the soul. Also with a comparison of Razi’s views with those of the other interpreters, I will show that some of the verses, from which Razi has inferred to the immateriality of the soul on his own interpretation, have no significance for the immateriality of the soul and even for the soul-body distinction.
