The present writing undertakes review of the work “Quran: an encyclopaedia” written and edited by Oliver Leman. It got published in 2005 with the contribution of 8 editors plus 43 professional writers. Paying attention to the Shiite sect and its personalities, giving the entries name with the Quranic vocabularies, being precise in the content of its entries and the easy understanding language they have employed in encyclopaedia are from the positive points The negative points of this work are such as not utilizing the expert and competent Quranic researchers, lacking a comprehensive order in organizing the entries, having no disciplined method for choosing and referring the entries and paying insufficient attention to key concepts of the Quran.

Collection and codification of the Quran in various periods is one of the most important issues of history of Quran that the Muslim and Non-Muslim Quranic researchers have paid attention to. The German Theodor Noldeke being a prominent figure of orientalists has played a greater part via writing an exclusive book in this respect “the history of Quran”. The orientalists’ Quranic studies, considering their presuppositions, limited sources and special method of research, can be seriously criticised and disagreed with. Thus, the current essay tries to describe and analyse some of his significant views such as: the reasons behind collection of the Quran during the Prophet’s lifetime, memorizers and collector of revelation, the word of collection itself and the similarities and differences of his and the Muslim scholars views.

John Burton is an English Quranic researcher and the author of the book “the collection of the Quran”. While talking about the edition of Quran, he maintains that the Quran we have access to, is the same Quran that has been collected by the prophet and no loss or deficiency has taken place within its verses. The issues of “abrogation” and “codices (Masahif) of the companions” are the two factors to eliminate the role of the prophet from collection of Quran mission. The subjects such as “abrogation of the recitation and the ruling” and “abrogation of the recitation and continuity of the ruling” enjoy nothing of the actual reality. They are the Sunnite jurists minds’ fabricated products, who while debating with other jurists and finding reasons from the holy Quran in favour of their own opinions, resorted to such means and documents. Had the prophet of Islam collected the verses of the Quran in the form of a codex (Mushaf), the aforementioned jurists could not converse of different recitations of the companions’ codices (Masahif) and elimination of some texts from the present Quran in the form of two kinds of abrogation. They saw and found the alternative to fabricate traditions to eliminate the role of the prophet from the process of collecting the Quran and to shift the accomplishment of this important task after his lifetime. Finally they did it.

The writer of the article after propounding the orientalists’ accounts on historical propositions of Quran labeling them as myths, points out some of the problems of such a theory. And subsequently delivers reasons and evidences to prove the cognitive aspect of the historical propositions of the Quran. He comes to this conclusion that there is not only a reason favoring such a motion but also there are a great deal of external evidences and internal textual proofs substantiating the cognition of the holy Quran’s historical propositions.

The infallibility and non-intervention of others save Allah in the process of revelation is from those doctrinal principles of Muslims which a great deal of traditional (the verses and narrations) and rational reasons stand as proofs for. The myth of Gharaniq is a fabricated tradition that contradicts with the important principle of infallibility; for it implies the intervention of Satan in descending of revelation. Unfortunately, citation of such a myth by some historians and exegetes provided the pretext for a group of orientalists to extend it as a document on fallibility of revelation. Nonetheless, with the existence of abundant textual and documentary problems within this myth, still we find few papers to have it comprehensively analyzed and criticized. In the very article, after citing the background of the myth, many of the orientalists’ views would be reported. After examining the story’s document we would present it to Quran, traditions and some self-evident reasons and then the justifications of its narrators will be closely inspected. Finally, a great part of the writing is particularly criticizing Montgomery Watt’s viewpoints in detail, where he talks of this fabricated story in most of his writings.

Tafsir in early Islam is one of the articles of “the Quran: an encyclopedia” that was published on 2006 with the head editor of Oliver Leman. The writers of the article are two professors in Turkish Harran University faculty of theology. The aforementioned professors while counting the definitions of Tafsir and allegorical interpretation (Ta’wil) and their difference in meanings deal with the historical course of Tafsir edition. They furthermore hint at various methods of exegesis. The writers highlighted that one of the reasons we need Tafsir is to expound and illustrate the Quranic stories for description of their all details. In this paper, the Jewish culture has been counted as one of the sources for exegesis of the Quran and Ibn Abbass as the most popular exegete of the Quran. They have also made this account that Khawarij were tremendously committed to the Quran. Afterward, the writers accuse the Shiite sect for not considering the occasions and context of the verses in exegesis of the Quran. For example they resort to the exegesis of an extinct Shiite sect called (Bayaniyeh). The following is the translation alongside its criticism, presented for the readers.
