Perception and the study of its different aspects throughout the history has been among the challenging topics in philosophy. One of the expressions of this subject is the perception of the self; the statment of the problem is as follows: How is it that an existent can perceive itself?Peripatetics believe that every existent abstracted from matter is the knower of its self; on the contrary, from Shaykh al-Ishraq’s point of view the only existent that can be the knower of its essence is the light by itself. Shaykh al-Ishraq states that by assuming the acceptance of peripatetic theory, it is necessary that prime matter be knower of itself and all self-subsistent forms and gives the prime matter having no quiddity like necessary being be the knower of all things and on the other hand necessary being too like prime be in need of forms. Of course Suhravardi regards all these consequences as invalid. In defence of the peripatetic theory as an agreeable theory the objections of Shaykh al-Ishraq are rejected and the origin of it is traced back to the weakness of Shaykh in Understanding the remarks of the peripatetics, because peripatetics do not reqard the abstract prime matter being actualised in outside world (rather they consider the prime matter as mere potency that has no independent actuality in outside world a part from its form) and in a same manner they do not believe that prime matter is a mere existence and without essence (like God), in consequence, the objections of Shaykh al-Ishraq are not valid.

Throughout the history of philosophy, Ibn Sina is the first philosopher who has propounded a discussion about the subject and definition of the science of metaphysics as an important metaphysical problem and has made it a prologue to the theology of Shifa. Ibn Sina’s view point on the subject and definition of metaphysics is strongly influenced by Abu Nasr Farabi’s enduring work named Treatise on the Objectives of Metaphysics. Speculation on the phrases of Farabi in this treatise indicates the degree of Farabi’s point of view influence in the case of mataphysics on the thought of Ibn Sina. To a certain extant it can be said that the general structure of the metaphysical system of Ibn Sina has been shaped on the basis of this treatise contents and as Ibn Sina confesses in his own autobiography, in metaphysics he owes much to this work of Farabi. Of course, despite abundant similarities between the two works, important difference can also be observed between them which shows the innovations and novelties of Ibn Sina in his discussion on the subject and definition metaphysics in comparison with Farabi’s discussions in his treatise on the objectives of Metaphysics.

In the relation of existence nad quiddity it is well – known that quiddity is subject to existence and is abstracted from it, and more strictly and more analytically it has no status but a shadowy and derivative status in relation to existence. Such an analysis and explanation of quiddity is compatible with the principle of principality of existence and unity of being but there is serious doubt in allowing the ascription of it to those theosophists who have not been in a position to determine one of these two (existence and quiddity) as a most original one, in particular Ibn Sina. In the books of Shaykh there are many phrases in which the quiddities have been considered to have an independent and thingness of their own and a bove it there are books in which Shaykh has dealt with the determination, origination and subsistence of quiddity before the occurance of existence (wether objective existence and intellectual existence or imaginary) and even has located a place and locus for this status of quiddity. On the other hand, searching in Mulla Sadra’s works shows us that although in his teaching method – that in early stage as far as possible he walks in with the ancients and agrees with them – sometimes he accepts a kind of status regardless of existence for quiddity but when he speaks from his own true position with an emphasis on his principles, he negates any thingness independent of existence for quiddity and accepts no status for it except as a shadow in relation to existence. Therefore, on the one hand according to texts of Shaykh which we have at our hand does not confirm the place and qualifications Mulla Sadra accords to quiddity, and on the other hand the fundamentals of Shaykh unlike that of Mulla Sadra does not demand such a necessity.

The subject of production, dissemination, disclosure and understanding sound is considered one of the most important and more or less complex phenomena of nature; for this reason, fewer scientists in ancient and middle civilization have properly dealt with it.Qorazeye Tabiiyyat which is attributed to Ibn Sina is some passages in the form of questions and answers has discussed this most important topic. By studying the background of sound in the ideas and theories of ancient scientists and reappraisal of the context of Ibn Sina’s ideas concerning the phenomenon of sound, scientific points included in the theory of Ibn Sina is explained in modern scientific language and on the basis of formulations and principle of contemporary physics.Ibn Sina has been quite aware of some of the principles of the dissemination of wave sound and given the examples which he offers it is clear that he has been conscious of the nature of wave sound and the way of its dissemination in solid and liquid material as well.

Ibn Sina the great rationalist Muslim philosopher considers man’s happiness the same as his attainment to a perfection of rational faculty and his unity with world of non – material intellects. For him, happiness has different degrees and its mosl complete and highest degree is intellectual happiness. Likewise, he states that complete happiness and wretchedness is only attainable in the hereafter. Against this view point of Ibn Sina which has been formed in the context of rationality based on revelation, the Christian fideist philosopher St. Augustine too regards happiness an knowledge of God and closeness to Him. He also does not consider this kind of happiness attainable in this earthly world and he defers true stability and comfort to the next world. For Augustine, although all human beings are seeking happiness, but true happiness is possible only through Christianity. The study of opposite and conforming position of these two viewpoints shows that each of these two philosophers with their own particular intellectual principles which has mainly been shaped in the religious context of man have emphasised on knowledge as a condition for true happiness.

Ibn Sina considers knowledge as the goal of wisdom and he believes that the true knowledge is not possible without self – purification and cleaning the heart of its impurities. Self – purification makes human being capable of, while having contact with active intellect, receiving knowledge from it. For him, the process of learning is the act of aquiring aptitude for the union with active intellect; that is to say, human soul before the process of learning has a deficient aptitude and after the process of learning this aptitude becomes complete; in such a way that by turning attention to intellectual object, human soul becomes unified with the active intellect and receives the intelligible from it. However, mere instruction does not bring about access to true knowledge for human being; because in true knowledge it is necessary that human being assimilates to the holy and pure intellects and this assimilation is not possible without self – purification. In addition, it is purification that makes it possible for human soul to turn its attention from bodily and sensual desires which is animal aspect of man and prevents it from perfection and as a result restrain rational faculty to govern human being. The aim of this research is that to study the role of self-purification in Avicennian epistemology and that how the soul by purifying itself receives an intution of active intellect.

Mulla Sadra’s point of view concerning the perception of other is feasible as a result of profound study and serious critic of Ibn Sina’s ideas and its precise understanding demands more attention to these critiques. Ibn Sina considers the perception of other as acquired and based on impression. Mulla Sadra criticizes this theory and rejects it; because he regards it as based on principles such as permanence of corporeal and sensual substance, denial of Platonic ideas and negation of identity of the knower and the known which is by no means acceptable for him.Unlike Ibn Sina, Sadra bases his own commentary of the perception of other on the belief in the sustantial movement of body and soul, Platonic Ideas and unity of the subject and object and hence regards the perception of other restricted to intuitive percepion, i.e. the presence of the form of object before the subject. Truth and falsity or superiority of each of these two viewpoints about perception of the other depends on the truth and falsity or superiority of the fundamentals and principles of it. Of these four foundations, the identity of the knower and the known is of the utmost importance. This is a theory which the unity of bieng and principality of being constitutes its basis and not only distinguishes Mulla Sadra’s thought from Ibn Sina, but also from Suhravardi’s thought.
