War is a necessary phenomenon. When sovereignty, life, property or dignity of people is threatened by foreigners, defense against such an invasion becomes unavoidable. Study of Ferdowsi's Shahnameh proves his good command of military skill such that he could accurately depict war scenes and events. Examples of the principles reported in Shahnameh are not different from the current principles of war, but what makes the difference is just the situation in that either one tactic or a mixture of some might be employed. For example, regarding the principle of security, dispatching messenger, appointing observer, and intelligence and as to the principle of surprise issues like concealment, ambush, pretend, cloaking, and false attack are noticeable. Comprehensive thought and floating vision of a commander augment his resistance against troubles and looming situations. Emergence of unexpected circumstances makes him resort to unconventional and indirect approaches to decision-making and defense. As a descriptive analytic attempt, this study first elaborates its purposes and significance, and then certain war tactics mentioned in Shahnameh are compared with the current principles of war.
